    Despite the quaint charm of Garden City or the fact that hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the eerie blue waters of Bear Lake every year, there is a dark, mysterious secret swimming below the surface. The Bear Lake Monster has always been shrouded in mystery, and rumors of a monster have been floating around since at least the 1800s. Stories were passed down by early pioneer settlers and maybe even the native people before them. This documentary explores the history, science, and reported sightings surrounding the Bear Lake Monster.
    Joseph C. Rich was the first pioneer settler to report sightings of a monster to the Deseret News. Little did he know that Bear Lake is estimated by scientists to be millions of years old. Bear Lake has four endemic fish species that are not found anywhere else in the world and some feel it's very likely there are undiscovered species, maybe even some sort of monster. The latest reported sighting that we know of occurred in 2018 and all the details of that sighting are featured in this video. Does the Bear Lake Monster really exist? Watch this documentary and decide for yourself.

      If there is something ancient in bear lake, it really would have to be a fish. Aquatic reptiles breathe air and would be sighted fairly often if they were in the lake.

    We used to let live in Laketown on the east shore one summer my dad and uncle were fishing off the shore of sweetwater and the boat started swaying back and forth they looked over the side and what they described was about 50 to 60 long 15 feet in diameter and moving under the water like a snake they got so scared that they rushed back to the house beached the boat ( and at the time it was one of the fastest small boats you could own ) they were white as ghosts they had us pack up and move back to salt lake and sold our house there and we have not been back since ... I have not seen it but my dad who has never lied to me and who I have never seen that scared before or since says he did and I absolutely believe him !

      Wow!! Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for sharing. Do I have your permission to pass this along to Utah State University's folklore archives? I wish I could have interviewed you, your dad, or your uncle for my documentary. If what you're saying is true, one indication to me that they could be telling the truth is that they sold their property and moved as a result of that experience. Unless they were lying and/or there really was some other reason to sell their house, people don't often take that drastic of a measure without a good reason. With that said, I really would love to hear what anyone else has to say about this story ...

It was about 100 yards away from the road the water was vary high in 2009. You could see the water going over it. My mom saw it ad she almost drove in to the lake lucky my grandmother yelled at my mom. And that's my encounter my family still goes up there every summer but I don't swim in the lake anymore and I don't let the kids go out to far.

    15:07 Keep in mind she’s relating the story secondhand, yet she has the enthusiasm as if she experienced this herself. This is how urban legends get passed around and believed.
    My urban legend . . .
    Sometime near the year 2000 I remember canoeing at night on the Hudson River Downstream from the Tappan Z bridge. Suddenly, to my right, a large black form appeared without a sound, rocking the canoe side to side. It was very disturbing and shocking since there was no warning of anything approaching me. Specially something that huge. There was no sound except for the water slapping the boat indicated that this monster was very close. It had blocked out the light from the NJ side. Suddenly I identified the attacker, I had just about been run over by a tug pushing about three barges. No lights, no sounds until the tugboat actually churned by.

    ... which science?

    • @MatthewHavertzPurposePictures
      @MatthewHavertzPurposePictures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Mr. Frank Smith is a local school teacher in the area. I would be happy to put you in contact directly with him if you have any questions. I'm not sure what science he focussed on with his degree. It's true, he has a master's degree, but that's not necessarily the reason I chose to interview Mr. Smith. When he contacted me about information and ideas he had regarding the Bear Lake Monster, what I felt made him a great fit for this documentary were two facts: one) he allows his students to do reports on the Bear Lake Monster every year and debate with each other their thoughts on the Bear Lake Monster and two) he has done his own personal research on the Bear Lake Monster in the past, including studying information at Utah State University's folklore archives. He didn't get a degree in folklore, lake monster, or anything like that, but I think Mr. Smith does an excellent job at qualifying everything he says. For example, he tells us doesn't necessarily believe there is a monster in the lake, but he says, "I absolute believe there could be." He tells us he has a master's degree in science to explain to us why he is so open to all the possible explanations, but doesn't try to pass himself off as an expert in any one particular field. Thanks for your comment!

In those videos they say submarines traverse these oceans. One notable one supposedly opens up near San Diego. This underwater ocean stretches to Utah and Colorado. That would actually be interesting to know. I wonder what percentage of popular lakes have lake monster in the United States. It's not every lake. Wikipedia has a pretty big list (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lake_monsters), but it's a minority of lakes in comparison to the hundreds of lakes in the United States. My initial guess would be anywhere from 25 to 45% of the lakes in the United States are alleged to have a lake monster. Again, that's just a total guess.

      @@MatthewHavertzPurposePictures it’s a very “out there” theory. Eyewitnesses describe creatures that look like known animals only much, much bigger. Just assume for 1 min the eye witnesses truly saw what they claim to have seen, what could it be? Maybe a new species, but in order for a new species to survive there would have to be a population and these sightings are too few for a population. What else? A random, giant specimen among the regular sized animals? If so, what would cause a random giant specimen? In humans, we have random giants aka people with acromegaly. Why not in lake animals? It’s a long shot, but it is a possibility.

    How could that witness not be aware of the bear lake monster when the entire town and area is engulfed with that kind of promotion??

    • @MatthewHavertzPurposePictures
      @MatthewHavertzPurposePictures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Renee, thanks for your comment! I'm not sure who you are referring to. There were two of the eye witnesses who were unfamiliar with the Bear Lake Monster.
      1. Mike Havertz had the experience he talked about in 1977, well before the Bear Lake Monster became as well promoted over "the entire town" in the way that it is today.
      2. Brent Bruson and his daughter witnessed whatever they did four to five years ago. They are from Texas. Not being from a nearby town (let alone a nearby state), they had never heard of the monster story.
      Finally, I am from Utah (only a couple hours a way from Bear Lake). Growing up, I knew friends who had family cabins at or near the lake. I went to the lake a couple times myself before I had even heard of the Bear Lake Monster. I only heard of the concept of a monster in the lake shortly before I made this documentary. I simply never noticed the few shops that sold Bear Lake Monster t-shirts, even though I had been to town to buy raspberry shakes. I love Moose Buns, a local coffee shop that sells Bear Lake Monster sugar cookies. But, Moose Buns simply did not exist when I went to the lake the first couple of times. I simply never noticed or knew anything about the monster legend until later. If I remember right, my first time being exposed to the idea of a "monster" in the lake was when I picked up a map of the lake. I noticed the faint design of a monster in the lake on that map. Then, I started asking around. Later, I found out about the t-shirts and other merchandise.
      Even at that point, when I asked locals, here are questions I often asked. "Where does this lake monster story come from? What is the original legend?"
      Do you know what people told me when I asked those questions? They didn't know! I asked the locals I personally knew. No one could tell me the original story.
      That's one of the main factors that motivated me to make this documentary. I wanted to tell a story that was largely unknown, even by many locals!
      I believe this documentary probably spurred on even more commercialization of the Bear Lake Monster. I know this documentary has helped educate thousands of people on the origins of the Bear Lake Monster folklore. However, that still doesn't mean that everyone who visits Bear Lake is familiar with the stories. I would venture to guess that MOST people in Utah and Idaho still are unaware of the idea of a Bear Lake Monster. That extends to states like Texas with even more unfamiliarity.
      I don't know if you live nearby. If not, maybe you are planning to visit Utah or Idaho at some point. Ask Utahans and Idahoans yourself. See what response you get. Tell me what you learn. Maybe it's more well known now. I'd be curious to read about the results you get.

    Why do so many lake monsters look like the Loch Ness monster??

    • @MatthewHavertzPurposePictures
      @MatthewHavertzPurposePictures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see at least two possible explanations:
      1. If a real, undiscovered, large, aquatic species exists, from an evolutionary perspective, it could trace back to a common ancestor or all be a part of the same family. In essence, they are all similar creatures.
      2. If these monsters are simply nothing more than tall tales and myths, it could also follow that the conception and communication of one mythical creature has captured such a hold on others' imaginations and the culture at large that others are purposely and/or subconsciously replicating it. The Loch Ness Monster is one of the oldest, if not the oldest; maybe others familiar with that story are copying it or imagining they are seeing something similar at other lakes.
      Either way, it is interesting to note that these creatures also bear resemblance to what scientists show us prehistoric aquatic creatures looked like (www.sciencenewsforstudents.org/article/real-sea-monsters). Another question you may consider asking is why does the Loch Ness Monster and other monsters look so similar to prehistoric aquatic creatures? I personally see multiple possible explanations for that as well.

Brent Brunson (one of the eye witnesses I interviewed) said he was in such shock and it happened so quickly that he just didn't have time to get out his phone. He was kind of kicking himself afterwards for that. I wonder though, would blurry pictures really convince anyone? We have a lot of people who claim to have some good pictures-and even video footage-of big foot, but that hasn't convinced skeptics or most scientists. I am not the first to suggest this, this theory was created in the 1800s and several people who have seen these animals claim that they are eels. Eels can live for hundreds of years and grow all their lives, so they can likely grow huge over time. Eels don't have ears but they have fins close to the head that looks like ears. This is also why the monsters come and go. They are always there it is just that a few of them occasionally grow huge and most don't

In fact, I completely cut out one interview I did because of reliability issues. You can also see many of the full-length interviews I did on my TH-cam channel. I think some of these sightings are very likely sturgeon. The sturgeon a few decades ago was rare or totally absent from over fishing in lakes and rivers across the country. Thanks to great conservation efforts they are not only coming back but are growing to very large proportions. Hi Wade, thanks for your comments! I'm grateful for you critically evaluating my documentary. I welcome that! I want people to point out inconsistencies. I want people to debate it. I want to hear all perspectives. I will be totally honest when I say I don't know if I'm convinced there is a large, undiscovered aquatic species in Bear Lake. But, I sure had a lot of fun trying to capture all the stories here. I don't know what people are seeing at Bear Lake. All I can do is share the stories as I found them, and people have really claimed to see strange things, including in the middle of winter. Here are two stories I was given as examples:
      "Was working for my brother, building homes in Sweetwater Resort above golf course south of lake in 1980. It has great views of lake from up there. On a snow stormy day in winter, I looked out an upstairs window and told the crew there was some dummy on the lake in a sail boat because I saw what I thought was a mast sticking up from a boat. They came to the window and I turned back to point it out...it was gone! My older brother jokingly said, it must have been the Bear Lake Monster. I've heard of it previously from a family friend in the 70's but wasn't thinking of it at the time."
      "Alonzo Howland Cook (1855-1933) had a Grist Mill in the canyon above Swan Creek where he lived. People from all over the Bear Lake Valley would bring their wheat to the mill to be ground into flour. Alonzo had been working in the canyon one day when the snow was deep and the weather was cold. For some reason-perhaps his wagon had broken down-he walked out of the canyon that day with his feet wrapped in gunny-sacks, trying to keep them warm. The lake was icy but not completely frozen over, so Alonzo made his way to the edge and sat down, putting his feet in the water to thaw them out. As he sat there warming his feet, he noticed what he assumed was a large log in the water close by. However, when he got up to go home, the thing he had thought was a log-seemingly about eight feet long-suddenly rose up out of the water and swam away, spouting water from its head!! Alonzo said he saw this fish more than once and there were others that lived in that day that told similar stories. There were thousands of reported sightings throughout the years, including Native American Indian stories, all which seemed to verify that there was, indeed, some kind of large fish that resided there and called Bear Lake its home. Alonzo suspected the fish was some kind of a whale, more than likely left from the early days when the lake was aqua blue and fed only from underground springs."

      @@MatthewHavertzPurposePictures I wouldn’t doubt that there is something large that is undiscovered in that lake, considering how deep it really is. I am very interested in exploration and undiscovered species. The depths of Bear Lake are pretty crazy deep. So many natural deep lakes have not truly been explored, I am sure that there are animals that have been undiscovered. Even if it’s a giant catfish that is amazing. I really appreciate The reply. It is always been my dream to explore the deep ocean or lakes. I live in Utah so I am kind of landlocked hahaha. I have only been to Bear Lake one time, But as soon as the man said the month that he saw the creature then seeing the water was like glass it was so calm it’s sparked my interest because ice fishing is a huge thing in most lakes in The state of Utah, so I had to double check. In my research bear lake is frozen for months out of the year, The month in question is right in the middle. I am a believer in undiscovered things as I said, but I also have to have a somewhat skeptical mind. As I said before I really appreciate your reply. Thank you

    • @MatthewHavertzPurposePictures
      @MatthewHavertzPurposePictures  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is totally understandable! There are a lot of people in the same camp. Thanks for your comment.
      For me personally, I do not totally disregard eyewitness accounts as forms of evidence worth considering. There would be so much from history I feel we'd have to totally disregard if we did that. I also believe there are ways to validate eyewitness accounts: multiple eyewitnesses (especially for the same event), the track record and credibility of the eyewitness, etc.
      However, I absolutely concede that eyewitness evidence doesn't hold the same level of credibility as other evidence: pictures, videos, physical evidence like a carcass or a living specimen.
      I am the one who made this documentary, and I wouldn't say I'm confident that some large aquatic species lives in Bear Lake. But, the eyewitness evidence is enough for me to least be open to the possibility and to warrant continued investigation.

    • @jjackomin
      @jjackomin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Matthew Havertz I'm not disregarding anyone's eyewitness testimony. I'm just calling it into question as useful evidence. I used to be a friendly acquaintance of Dr. Richard Greenwell, a colleague of Dr. Roy Mackal. Dr. Greenwell told me some amazing stories about his experiences in the mountains of Northern California in search of Bigfoot, but he said, from a scientific perspective, that they were totally useless. I was working with him in acquiring night vision equipment before he died.

      What do you mean when you say, "no it doesn't"? Do mean you do not believe there is a large aquatic species living in Bear Lake? Do you mean there is no prehistoric-type animal living in Bear Lake? I just wasn't just what you were arguing against.
      You said "Its just big fish." I actually don't think many of the eyewitnesses and believers would disagree with you. Many of them would say that's exactly what they think this "monster" is: a big, undiscovered fish species.
