  • Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia is the former royal yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, in service from 1954 to 1997. She was the 83rd such vessel since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. She is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the famous racing cutter built for The Prince of Wales in 1893. She is now a five-star visitor attraction and evening events venue permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2014, The Royal Yacht Britannia was named the UK's no. 1 landmark by TripAdvisor.
There was some controversy over the siting of the ship, with some arguing that she would be better moored on the Clyde, where she was built, than in Edinburgh, with which the yacht had few links. However, her positioning in Leith coincided with a redevelopment of the harbour area, and the advent of Scottish devolution.
The Queen was reported to have wept at the decommissioning ceremony, which she attended along with most of the senior members of the Royal Family.
Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Britannia is now permanently moored as a five-star visitor attraction in the historic Port of Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, and is cared for by the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, a registered Scottish charity.
Entrance to the yacht is via the Ocean Terminal development, and over 300,000 people visit the Royal Yacht Britannia every year. She is also one of the UK's top evening events venues. On 18 May 2006, the Swiss-born Hollywood actress and first Bond girl, Ursula Andress, celebrated her 70th birthday on board the Royal Yacht. On 29 July 2011, a drinks reception was held on board Britannia for Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter Zara Phillips and her husband Mike Tindall to celebrate their upcoming wedding.
A retired Rolls-Royce Phantom V state car, owned by the royal family in the 1960s, is on display in the purpose-built garage aboard Britannia. Other highlights of the tour of the five decks that are open to the public include the Queen's Bedroom, the only bedroom of a living monarchy which can be viewed (behind a glass wall), and the State Dining and Drawing Rooms, which hosted grand receptions for kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers throughout the world. The Royal Deck Tea Room was added in 2009.
The 1936 racing yacht Bloodhound, once owned by the Queen, is now berthed alongside Britannia. Bloodhound was one of the most successful ocean-racing yachts ever built and was also the yacht on which both the Prince of Wales and Princess Royal learned to sail. The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust bought Bloodhound in early 2010 and she is the centrepiece of an exhibition focusing on the Royal Family's passion for sailing. Visitors can view Bloodhound from a specially built pontoon when the racing yacht is in port. During the summer, July and August, she is berthed in Oban Marina and is available for private charter, as she sails around the islands, once visited by the royal family during their annual two-week holiday in the Western Isles of Scotland. During this period, Royal Yachtsmen (Yotties) from Britannia's original crew sail the yacht for the Britannia Trust.

When I did My Maritime trade training as a seaman in the Armys Navy (RCT Maritime on Landing Craft and Mexeflotes and small fast boats attached to 3rd Commando Brigade Royal Marines). My instructor was a retired Bosun off the Brittainia. He joined the Navy at 17 in Korean war. Started at the bottom and went from unlisted Boy sailor through the non commission ranks. Then commissioned. He finished as a First Lieutenant as Boson on Brittainia. Then retired. Dont get taught by any better than a Bosun standard off Brittainia. He passed away few years back. Learnt so much.

Visited this ship a couple of days ago in Edinburgh. It's a beautiful, compact vessel. I was rather surprised to see how spartan the royal cabins were. My hotel room was outfitted better and was more spacious than the Queen's bedroom on the ship. The officers and the crew bunks are tiny. Sailing on the yacht must have been a cramped experience, both for the royals and more for the crew. But even so the Brittania was supposedly a favourite of both the Queen and Prince Phillip. So it is rather nice to note that the Royals do enjoy living away from grandiosity and luxury, even if for a short time. Definitely a to-do for anyone visiting Edinburgh.

The focus of luxury was definitely on the dining room and the servant service. It was a working ship - not a holiday yacht.

It's obsolete, unseaworthy, and very expensive to run.

I think another Royal Yacht would show the world we are back in business. I firmly believe we are going to dominate green technology. What better way to showcase a green efficient modern yacht.

I was amazed how non-posh it was. To me, it lacked warmth and personality. I thought the crew quarters had to be where all the fun was. But the upper decks felt like there would be no fun on this ship.

Please don’t drag Britannia out of retirement. Yes she is still a beautiful vessel but she is history and has a majestic air. But Britain’s new found freedom from the E U is an opportunity to forge an even more successful future. If a new Britannia is desirable then let’s make it the most technically advanced ship afloat. Paid for with public and private money. If we use it as a floating embassy and business centre the benefits for Britain could be enormous.

What an immense privilege. She simply dazzled wherever she went and was a credit to the dedication of her crew. We really did rule the waves. I filled up every time I saw her on television. She made me so proud of the excellence the British nation can covey to the world.

Agree. She should be out there doing her job. Wish Blair and cronies had been reliant on her rescuing them from a war zone. Bet they'd VERY quickly change their minds!
