    Bell & Howell does not exist and has not existed in a long time. It is a brand name that companies in China that make absolute junk pay to put that name on their junk. It is basically a copyright that some bank licenses out to far away companies. This is largely true of all of the good name manufacturers of yesteryear.

    • @benkeysor7576
      @benkeysor7576 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It hasn't for a long time. Once the business goes out, the name gets sold. It's a common practice with once popular top of the line names & it's easy money for the new owners since people still buy that name product. It sucks but it is what it is.

      @@JaneDoe-yz6by I have a Singer from BITD. Must be 80 years old. Works, well, like a sewing machine! This is the problem. The brand doesn't mean anything anymore because NONE of these companies actually make anything. They merely license out a font and a logo. There was a time when buying RCA meant you got the best quality, many years of part availability, easily obtained schematics. In fact, I am willing to bet that the parts availability on my old singer is better than the parts availability of a "singer" from the last 5 years.

    90% of America has COLD long winters. This is insane. A security product you can only use for 1/2 the year? I am guessing that the main reason is not actually the cold. The main reason is the crappy battery and even crappier solar panel. The roughly 8 or 9 hours of sun will just not fully charge such tiny batteries (it probably uses either very low mah AAA cells or 1/2AA (literally 1/2 of an AA battery length 3 of them for 3.6volts)
    But the big downer and why this is not worth 20 dollars is that it's not an LED light. The kind of LED it is using is not designed for ambient lighting (let alone spotlights). They are designed for indicators. The only way to get a decent amount of light from them is to overdrive them. The problem with that is they fade VERY fast when you overdrive them. It will be noticeably dimmer in a couple weeks to a month depending on how often it is actually on.

    I’ve had 4 of them for about 5 months now. 3 in great sun locations, 1 in a shade area during the day. So far they work great, I had the sun bright, and I put this in the exact same location as it and it works better (last all night and the brightness is a different kind of bright). I use this to light up large areas, I don’t need much as I live in a relatively low light pollution area. I’ve already had multiple freezes this year with no issues on performance. The product is $20. And honestly, so far it’s been my best $20 buy.

    Its got its pros and cons. A pro that I like is that you don’t have to mess with wiring it. A con is that it needs to be in an area where there is sunshine in order to charge it, so not all areas around the house and/or garage would work.

  • @Jerry_S.

    This seems like a fine product, the shape and convincingly strong, blinking red light really give it the look of a security camera and the solar panels added the feeling of being a futuristic type of a security system. The downside is what I believe is to be cheep plastic housing. A touch up with a metallic spray paint is all it needs to be that much more convincing. Would be great for my grandma's house! Looking directly into a light (especially with a camera) is not the best way to evaluate it. Rather you should evaluate how well it lights up the area which you want lit. The Bionic Spotlight was aimed about straight out and the other one was aimed down at what appeared to be a 45 degree angle. Adjust both the the same angle and evaluate how well each one lights up your driveway. BTW, in your video, your driveway appeared to be well lit even with no lights on. Was that a bright moon night or is there a streetlight near your house?

      @99Duds 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CommodoreFan64 There's a lot of things that "should" be done on a daily basis but it wont happen. Keeping the battery warm would make it need a much larger solar panel cus your going to need more than just insulation you have to keep it above 50F. No way one of those would be in these cheap things. They are likely using a Nickel-metal hydride battery, which you can recharge and is inexpensive to provide one cell for this application. The winter part is probably more likely due to body materials expanding and shrinking from the changing temperatures during winter. Which would allow water to come in and freeze inside

    I had one up since September 2020 and it's still going strong, even working in the coldest part of a Canadian Winter.
    I live at the 52nd Latitude and it seems to get enough sunlight to work, mind you I haven't checked its operation in the wee hours of the morning.
    I bought a second one for my shed and the solar panel faces southwest, which still seems to give it enough light.

    I have a white miniature schnauzer and our backyard backs off onto a federally protected nature park that is home to a lot of coyotes, foxes, and raccoons. All of which will unfortunately make mince meat out of my wimpy pup. In the winter, it's already hard to see him, and before we let him out we have to shine a spotlight along our back fence to double check if there are any coyotes watching (more often than not, they are) so a constant spotlight shining along the fence line would be great. However, our backyard is also around 90 feet in length from our house, so this light had me excited but unfortunately lets me down on all fronts. The range, and the fact that it can't be used when it's hardest to see my dog (Eastern Canadian winter :P) renders this thing as useless. Maybe you could mount it inside by a window, and save money on your electric bill hahahaha

    I use 1 of these at the side of my house. It puts off enough light to not trip over something in the yard but not bright enough to help identify a burglar that might be hanging around. Ive had it on the home for 15 months now and it still works well. I'd say it's a great product but it's not Surefire bright. More of a utility light. I do not think it would last in Idaho weather. If you live in the south I think you'll like it.

    Mine have been outside already this year in 20 degree weather it did just fine..also the single bionic light has about 6 hours of light time if it was left on all the time the double bionic just over 2 hours..both are 30 seconds after motion has stopped so its unlikely you'll run out the battery

      I know somebody that has a couple too and they work but I had this one out in the rain heavy rainstorm it works like crap I took it apart it was dry inside but now the lights don't blink unless you fully charge it with a spotlight but it dies pretty quick I'm afraid to put the other ones outside that I put I'm trying to find something better for more expensive so I can buy that and put this in that box and return that and try to get it $200 one for $19

    I've never had any luck with solar lights. The batteries seem to only last one year. Plus as you mentioned once winter rolls in we have gray skys for 3-4 months.

  • @benkeysor7576
    @benkeysor7576 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm guessing the reason they state not to leave it out during the winter time is because the cold is hard on the batteries and can greatly shorten the lifespan of them. All these inexpensive solar lights are likely using cheap Nickel Metal Hydrate batteries and as it gets cold their capacity is going to be reduced. They basically don't want you to don't want you kill the batteries.

    If you want a motion detected light buy the Mr Beams MB360XT. It is battery operated so you can mount it anywhere and the 3 D cell batteries last for a year or more. It cost about $20 and is not affected by cold or heat. It is rated 4 star + on Amazon by over 3500 reviews.

    The reason they want you to take it down in the winter is that cold temperatures have a huge effect on battery performance. Couple that with the reduced sunlight in those months and it will perform so terribly that people will complain. The batteries shouldn't suffer any long term harm trom the cold, they'll just put out very little energy. I think it's a ruse to cover for poor winter performance.

    i think there maybe some other tests to do like.. how far does it shine out.. the motion is 25 feet but spotlights are meant for more direct light like a flashlight unlike the sunblast that meant to shine the surrounding area... two other advantages that could be handy is that you can adjust the light angle AND the solar panel unlike many others where it is fixated with the light angle.. might be worth a shot for the back yard.. for that is a large size solar panel compared to others from the looks here
