One of the foremost Catholic thinkers to emerge from the First World War was the Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881 - 1955). The war experience was a true crucible of fire for him and formed him deeply for the rest of his life. Drawn to follow the road of fire, he first began to write in 1916 in the trenches. His essays of 1916-19 are not poetry in a formal sense, but possess a great poetic quality. His Writings in Time of War expresses a powerful spiritual vision and conveys a deep love for life, for Earth and humanity, for God and especially for the cosmic Christ.
