Many people underestimate Jack Mercer because the only regular character voice he did for Paramount Cartoons was Popeye. However,he did very many incidental voices-including King little of Lilliputt(Gulliver's Travels),Smack the Mosquito(Hoppity Goes To Town)and more. When I first learned he did all the voices in Felix the Cat my estimation of his talents shot up high!
Originally shown in two parts- around the 3:30 mark, there was always a "cliffhanger" in which Felix faced some dire enemy or a certain fate; then, Jack Mercer would mysteriously intone over the end title, "What will happen to Felix...in the NEXT exciting episode, of the adventures of Felix the Cat?". Producer Joe Oriolo used a "package" of stock music cues Winston Sharples originally wrote for Paramount's theatrical cartoons between 1952 and '59. That's why it sounds "familiar".
I had a VHS tape of Felix the Cat, this was one of the few episodes on the tape. This episode was the first on the tape. Brings back memories when me and my siblings used to watch this when we used to live in Saugus.
Felix showin' off his plants is accompanied by relaxing strock production music from Winston Sharples from his longtime Paramount-Famous VIs Vis Harvey Films, as seen in"DAWG GONE"(Famous-Harvery). WHen the big bug grabs Prof.anmd Rock music from "PATRIOTIC POPEYE", the one after the spinach eating, that turns up when Famous did the multi-studio POPEES, is heard.
I haven't seen Rockbottom in a long time. "Hey Professor"...Note Rockbottom isn't always consisten with his address, honoring the Prof.with "Boss", since that's what Professor actually is to him. "Hey...BAWSSS!"
I wonder what it's like to be sucked up into a plant and to grow out as a berry. I miss the ages when cartoons didn't make sense or had strong plots, these were good enough.
I caught glimpses of it as a young lad, but the most experience I had with Felix was a few comic books i managed to dig up while looking for Sonic the Hedghog and Animaniacs comics. But my greatest animation experience with Felix was in the early-90s movie... the title of which escapes me.
Professor and Rock stalking toward the house music-from Casper's "Heir Restorer" When the baddies share their proposal to Felix-from one shot "Dante Dreamer" (Winston Sharples archival cues from Paramount toons) Rockbottom heading offs croons the public domain Marsallies, the familiar French Anthem And that's the Patriotic Popeye power cue when Felix chases the insect.) Animation by Jim Tyer.
Not a terribly satisfying resolution. Although the bad guys' plan was foiled and they got walloped by Felix, the second bug took the gold plant and flew away. Felix didn't seem all that disappointed though, so I suppose it was alright.
I remember in the 1939 Popeye short "Hello, How Am I", when Wimpy (whom Jack Mercer also voiced) was disguised as Popeye and imitating his voice, he sounded a LOT like The Professor!
It was a joke. Everyone's smart enough to read the title. 'Felix the Cat', not 'Cat in the Hat'. And you're being a bit hypocritical here. How would you know if it wasn't a joke?
The episodes that Jim Tyer animated, including this one, are always fun to watch.
Good or bad, YOU MUST GO!!!
- Felix the destroyer
Coffee Mixer Hey! Felix is not a destroyer! He's a very wonderful cat!
Coffee Mixer tjänar.x,

* My brother and I thought of this song whenever my dad's pal Felix Katz dropped by. ☺
This is the shtuff I craved as a child,no wonder my parents couldn't stand us. This is some primitive shit. Brings back memories.

I have a VHS tape of this with 8 Felix the Cat cartoons! Since I was 10!
Thanks for posting. My name is Felix as is my son's, my father's, his Uncle's and my cat's name.
I'm 14 and when I was little I always watched Felix! It was in the late 1990's. :)
They made another Felix cartoon in 1995 with a surreal Ren and Stempy styling to it.
What kind of lesson are they teaching here?
Nice bug saved his life and he sprays it!
If a bug saved my life he's my friend forever.
Oh my goodness... I have not seen this since I was probably six years old.

Felix is ultimate Win.

Who was watching this in the 60`s
This is a good one!
a chain smoker o the good ol days of smoking in cartoons! :)
Jim Tyer is the lead animator here.
It does indeed look his work here, Fromthesidelines, including the end scene.
Jack Mercer, long time voice for Popeye the Sailor.
It's like right at "the end" it repeats over and over lol

I was frightened from that plant
An oldie....anyone remember this cartoon?
Jim Tyer animated this in his patented "rubbery style" of animation.
the goose that lays the golden egg must have been thrown overboard
all that gold...
Why did Felix kill that grasshopper? It saved his life!
Yeah, the guy who used to voice Popeye.
I remember in the 1939 Popeye short "Hello, How Am I", when Wimpy (whom Jack Mercer also voiced) was disguised as Popeye and imitating his voice, he sounded a LOT like The Professor!
is it possible to get these on dvd?
miss old shows like these :(
This is what I remember.
Rightyo professor. Ha, Ha, Ha
Right-ee-oh!
I find it funny that the animation looks almost like H-B's 1956-1959 Yogi bear series animation.
that probably isnt by accident...
