Installing NVME Boot drive on HP Z400 with legacy BIOS [950 PRO SSD]

  • Today, I will be showing you how to install/use a NVME bootable Samsung 950 pro ssd onto the HP Z400 workstation pc. Hp Z400 has a Legacy bios, but the Samsung 950 Pro has an Opt-Rom included, therefore can be booted from a X58 system using IDE mode, without the need of UEFI bios.
To get the NVME working on your HP Z400 X58 system, you will need a pciex4 to NVME adaptor.
I get 1500MB/s read and write speed. If this video helped you, be sure to hit the like button x

I know this is a little old but you got lucky, the Samsung 950 Pro happens to have an oprom (Option Rom) on board like the Intel 750 SSDs. If you tried any other NVME drive with this adapter it most likely would not work.
Other World Computer has a couple of pci adapters that I believe have oproms but will have to check. Not sure of other SSDs or adapters that have oproms, but all other ones I have run across are passive.
If there are any other NVME drive/adapters out there that have legacy boot support, feel free to comment.

Reason why its slow in writes is due to using IDE data config, IDE protocol was not built for SSD and so won't utilise full speed and windows won't be able to use trim either

I have the same module here but I have the 256gb one, and the same Z400, but I have the X5680 CPU and 12GB of PC3-10600E ram, so it seems to have enough of that, but I tried the same thing U did but I used a USUAL plain X4 type plug-in cheap china type board, NOT that ribbon socket that you are using, I have a 1712 READ speed and a 958 WRITE speed in mbps, I am going to ASSUME it may be possible U lost some signal strength using the long cable ribbon as U do lose some signal on that, so best to just get the usual X4 slot cheapo NVME board and yes put it in that lower slot 4, that X16 slot and yes as you said change the Raid+AHCI to IDE, all will work fine and yes it will show up in the boot menu, so good job on the experiments but I am getting faster speeds on the lesser 256gb module, so the only thing I can see here is the ribbon-cable yes can create some loss there, so change that to a usual dollar china X4 slot board and UR set to go. BETTER YET they make this one board that has TWO sockets, the NVME socket and the NGFF one too with it's one Sata port, U can use THAT ONE which I use and then U can use the NGFF for a nice fast-storage drive to put on one of the Sata 2 ports on the mobo so U got maybe like 280 READ-WRITE speeds for that storage drive, all powered off that one single $8 type board.

Most likely yes ... Check out "theartofserver" on youtube and ebay. He shows some solutions for Z800 systems. Please note that after my many purchases to improve the speed ... the first question is why? SSD's in MOST real world user situations do not need a faster data transfer - you will never notice the difference. If you really need that faster speed get a new computer. In all of my testing on a Z800 ... nothing beats RUNNING SAMSUNG MAGICIAN with a SAMSUNG SSD SATA3 on my SATA 2 ide connections (not the SAS connections (just move the cable on the motherboard from SAS to SATA to keep using the hard drive bays)). I'm sure a 4 card bifurcated solution would work at an enormous expense (again if needed buy a new computer) I have purchased used OWC Mercury Accelsior E2 cards with dual memory sticks (they use an older design stick design (Mac 2012/2013 design)) and they work perfectly in a Z600/Z800 with speeds around 600 MBps or greater.
