Same here, (but not quite to the extent that Abom79 goes to), also would like to see all aspects of the project, including the boring drilling and tapping of holes.
As much as I love watching chips fly, I like watching you because I learn from you talking about setups or tricky operations. I understand that makes a lot more work for you, so I'll take what I can get, but I watch you for what I can learn, not for chips flying or machines running.
The added time of filming this job would have cost me the deadline. 3 hours per part just in setup and indicating. 4 in total, but average of 3 hours each. 12 hours of setup, then another 3 hours of work. 24 hours in the job that had to be done and delivered in 2 days. It was a little tight.
Most retired machine operators I know say proudly " I did my own setups" apprentices would always be asked " How are you going to hold it" I like the chips too but for me the set up is how we learn, I also like you giving the speeds and feeds, good work.
Like chips, like dial indicators, like it all! Thanks for your videos. Awesome news about new business possibilities! During the narrative you should mention the importance of math in your daily life. Nobody does but it is mandatory in your life, Keith R, Cutting Edge, etc etc. You guys take it for granted because you’re good at by necessity but it’s learned. I would like young folks (and everyone else) know that math is so important. Thanks again. Hang in there!
I quite enjoy seeing job setup in your videos - I learn something new every time - but it's easy to understand why you couldn't include any this time - no worries,,,
I miss running the Lucas Boring Mill. In moldmaking, I drilled many yards of deep hole water lines in bases and inserts. Such a versatile machine. Keep up the great content. BTW, speckle in a little swearing, it keeps it REAL.
Considering the time constraints of this job and the 3 hour per part setup, I couldn't waste any more time filming. Not anyone can make chips on this scale.
@TopperMachineLLC It kinda sounds like you took my comment the wrong way. I enjoy watching everything you show us . I watch because I learn how to do it right
Greetings Josh from the oldest town in Texas, Nacogdoches. Flying chips with machine noise instead of music is the best. Some of the setup would be great. Merry Christmas. Hoping your business picks up in 2025.
Hey Mr Josh, I saw the 3 hour setup per part in another reply. I do enjoy listening and watching you setup parts. Im hoping things pick up and move us all forward for years to come!
That's great news that you've had a lot more enquiries about work for customers and hopefully you get a lot more work coming in from all over the country. Shipping sure is cheap in your region. Here in Australia, it costs a fortune to send a small item.
I wouldn't have minded seeing what must have been a complicated set-up. It seems that for a cumbersome job like this one, the set-up is 3/4 of the battle. Happy Winter Solstice to Topper Machine and everyone who visits this site.
Happy days Josh, I agree with the other comments buddy, chips are fun, but I can make my own, learning how and why, is way more interesting 😊 Still always love the content, this included, of course, Happy holidays if we dont see you again Lots of love to you and yours Ralfy 👍
That mill is a beast. It didn't even know it was working. And what a beautiful finish! Glad to hear you have some work coming in. Happy Holidays to you and yours. Josh
Josh: I have always said - You have to have the tools and expertise to use them. For me the setup is more important than the chips. If there is an error in the setup or measurement, you can destroy the part. Good job!!
Let the chips fly! More content is always nice but Josh always has to balance the wish with the running the core business, eyes on the prize so to speak. Always learning from you.
Awesome job Josh. I love seeing set up as I learn new ideas on how to set things up and the thought process on how you work through the problems you come up against. I realise there are jobs that you can’t show certain things. But eventually I would be keen on seeing from start to finish. Others may not, but I would be keen as mustard. Many thanks for all that you are doing and sharing. Hope you have a great Christmas and safe new years. Blessings from kiwi land.
It is always good to see you and your videos. I am so used to working with sheet metal that I forget that there is thick steel out there. When I saw that thing I could not help but think of how heavy it is and that it would take some work to line it up. I am sorry that you lost so many customers but glad for the hope of new work coming your way. You are always interesting. Hang in there and know that your subscribers believe in you.
So satisfying to see manually operated machines in action. I know that many people like watching a CNC machine better, but to each their own. Hope you are able to get some of those contracts, it's a shame that manufacturing has been vanishing from the USA.
It's really awesome to hear your channel viewers came thru for you and brought in some much needed work. 🙏🏻 it holds you over until things turn around under the new administration.
I wish you a Merry Christmas and a busy and profitable 2025. And thank you for getting the snow blower ready-let's hope it works as well as it did last winter. NO SNOW 🌨❄
We have a 6" kyocera facemill. Its the best facemill I have ever used. It will take .100" at 40 inches per min but it does max out the load meter on our G&L mills.
Josh, you say that, but the setup is (for me) the best part, the thought process behind way you hold something awkward or within the limits of your tooling is facinating. Yes watching chips fly is always satisfying, but how you got there is the most important part of the process All the best for the holidays!
It was good to hear you are having some success with reaching out to new customers. I’ve been retired since 2000 so I can’t help with much but good wishes and “likes” for your videos. I’m glad to see you are being proactive in Lee your business going. I’ll be praying for you and watching your work. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Louisiana.
@ Job shops are a day to day business. I’m not sure if there is a way to change that unless you could figure out some way to build up a group of clients that would pay you a retainer or develop a product that afforded you some predictable income. Josh, What I find interesting during climb milling the gearbox noise cleans up and only turns to a mild hum. Wonder if taking a deeper cut cleans up all the noise?
I honestly didn't notice that in person. The audio of the video did show a change though. The noise is actually a bearing that is really hard to replace and prone to failure. Every Lucas I have ever seen has the same issue.
The horizontal boring mill is an absolute beast, I enjoy seeing the big stuff, I would have been interested in the setup but I can also see that it would be hard enough without trying to film it oo, its a huge part with a comparitively small indexing point. Chips are good Thanks for sharing Josh and happy holidays to you and your special lady

would a 100 mill cut be to much to hog off
100 mill is almost 4 inches. I only needed to take of 1/4 inch. 0.075 was giving me the best results. 0.100 was just starting to cause some chatter.
