Collecting Lego Star Wars is like knowing you're going into a trap, but still going because you think you'll be prepared. (You never will be)

One can survive Lego Star Wars collecting about as well as those younglings could survive Order 66, which is to say not at all. Believe me, I’m eight years deep into the hobby. 😂

Tips on how I survived collecting Lego Star Wars:
    1. Sacrificing other themes
    2. Reduce my savings dramatically
    3. Take on family/friend loans
    4. Maximizing pay-later schemes aka debt
    5. Skipping meals
    6. Continue driving a failing car
    7. Delay my loan repayments
    8. Working 2 jobs to buy retired sets
    9. Abandoning dreams & life goals
    10. Just trying to stay alive
    You're welcome...
Oh ..and stay single to die alone.

I make units of 6 men. In the case of the Republic, it's most often 1 Jedi, 1 clone commander and 4 other clones. I put these six on a plate, and then that unit is complete. I got multiple units from different time periods, along with multiple ships and other transports. This is for me the way to not explode into massive armies for which I don't have the space: by focussing on these units, it satisfies my hobby, and I still get armies. And by putting them on these plates, I can easily move them as one unit. And pit them against each other :D.

Honestly I’ve never been into army building with any Lego theme I’m interested in. I just need 1 of every character I like. This applies to Star Wars as well. 1 Jek 14, 1 Captain Phasma, 1 Enfys Nest, 1 Geonosis Airborne Trooper, 1 BB-8, 1 Aayla Secura, 1 Gar Saxon, etc. I want to appreciate each minifigure individually, not just have a massive blob of hundreds of the same minifigure.

To think that I got started in lego around 2000, and my first straw wars sets were the two best rebel and imperial battle packs (7667 and 7668) from 2008 when I was 13, and I finally had a chance to build up my collection on my own whim in 2017-2021 thanks to reduced classes at collage giving me the time and money to collect, that was a dream come true. And then inflation hit and I gotta curb my wild spending hurt

Fun fact, we can't survive LEGO Star Wars collecting. We are always tempted to buy a super expensive dope minifigure that only came out in 1 set 10 years ago, or an expensive polybag, or 50 of the same set to make an army we crave having. But I don't mind, I like spending my money anyways, love the vids, keep up the good work Holly

I've found myself seriously getting back into collecting since 2016, with Vader's TIE Advanced and A-Wing. Just seeing how Vader was updated was cool, and I haven't stopped since. The year after, I sprang for the UCS Slave I since Boba Fett is (was) a beast. Fast forward to about 2022, and I got the UCS Millenium Falcon as well. It sits proudly in... my closet. You're spot on with these things being a space commitment, though I really wanted it for the build experience and the fact it is minifig scale. And yeah, I was petty enough to part out the sequel trilogy stuff it came with. No bypassing compressors in my Falcon, dammit.

So I saw LEGO kits in K-Mart and thought hmmmmmmmm these might help.I purchased a LEGO X-Wing, TIE Fighter and the Millennium Falcon in 2012. Never understood army building. I get enough to be about two fistfulls of one type of faction. And then from there I get one or two extra packs to store in case some of the figfs get lost or broken. Two fistfulls is enough for any moc, unless you're making a SolidBrixStudios-sized moc.

I collect the minifgs moreso (sets? more recent ones; this applies to mostly older figures). Also, Lego armies aren't the only armies I have; plastic soldiers from things like CTS and AIP are decent, with most AIP being World War One.
Edit: IDK about other people here, but I've been collecting Lego SW since about 2011 (though 2017-20, 21 was a dark age).

I started collecting Lego SW back in 2013 and I was buying everything at the time. It became so expensive though I slowed down and started just collecting the sets and figures I actually liked. I have over 600 sets and 2000 minifigures but never fell into army building. That said, I have so many troopers I've probably done it without thinking but they will be inconsistant. My advice is to just buy what you like and don't fall into buying everything.

Room is an issue but i will find room. My two unicorn UCS sets are Darth Vader's advanced tie fighter and a Shuttle Tydirium, both are big money even pre owed, hopefully they might make newer versions one day.

    1. I'd say putting quality over quantity. 10 501st troopers, 2 heavys and 2 snipers (officers with custom airbourne helmets... i grew up with the pandemic battlefront games), Rex and Fives - all with custom blasters, and printed arma - are fine for me. You can fill a Gunship or ATTE. No need for 1000 Troopers with unprinted arms and standard blasters.
    2. Stick to your favourite aspects. If you are into the OT the most, stick to it. For my part I got all Mando figures and the whole Bad batch including custom blasters, custom printed arms and so on. That is really manageable.

Im collecting lego star wars since 11 years and If I could give you a tip is that dont buy everything for the sake of collection.
Just buy what you really really like, it may sounds obvious but when you start collecting you dont have a lot of sets so you begin to buy everything that is available even if the set is mid and 1 year later you begin to regret it. so like just buy what you really really want and you find objectively good and you wont regret it 😉and it will save up space
also dont fall into the trap of keeping lego boxes, it's useless we're collecting plastic not cardboard, it takes so much place for nothing, the only reason of keeping a box is if you plan on selling it later but then just dont open it so it doesnt make really much sense.
I say that cause I used to keep lego boxes, I was like "but what if I sell it later.." or "I could sell the box it might get some value🤓..."
I was in complete denial of myself XD I was just keeping them for the sake of collectioning things.

I agree with the clone helmet problem. I believe there would be less complaints about the helmet holes if they had been introduced with the 2020 501st battle pack and if Lego could get the printing right. I try to live with the differences in the helmets for my clone army, but the inconsistency really bugs me. In fact, a couple years ago I sold all my clones that weren’t 2020 style because I disliked the inconsistency in design styles. Kinda regret that now.

I survive by not collecting Star Wars. Although Castle army building can get really expensive as well.

    Step 1: Live alone
    Step 2: Don't be in a relationship
Step 3: Be your own doctor & dentist
    Step 4: Have 0-1 pet(s)
Then maybe you can buy 1 retired Star Wars set every year or so.. 😅
I was able to keep my 7110 Landspeeder with some little sets from when I was a kid but 9494 Anakin's Jedi Interceptor got me back full speed into the Lego Star Wars line. Sadly I sold some gems in 2017 due to some priorities but otherwise I love my collection as of now. Scored a Slave Leia ($5 at a local fair 2 year ago!) Queen Amidala ($125), & Geonosis Padme ($41, a lil over priced but she was pristine) as of late.
Some head scratching decisions by LEGO with their prequel sets has made me buy a few of the retired prequel minifigs because I don't think they like that trilogy. They need to get a Queen Amidala minifig dress line & sets like Palpatine's Arrest back out there!

I managed to survive thanks to Disney.
They killed Star Wars. And that killed my interest in most of LEGO's sets. Thanks to Disney's mismanagement of yet another IP, I now only collect a few select sets (mostly UCS and 18+ ones) from real Star Wars. Which is to say, Episodes 4, 5 and 6.
    That's it.
(I will make an exception to a set from the Prequels if it's a ship I really like, such as a Venator, a Sith Infiltrator or a Trade Federation Battleship. Everything else is counterfeit-Star Wars and therefore doesn't exist to me).

To me UCS sets are like MOC's...They aren't real lego designs. If it is for display only then it is a failure of lego engineering! Normal sets are more impressive to me because they have to look cool, withstand the test of play, AND require practical play features to be engineered into them! A truly impressive feat if you ask me! Also UCS sets aren't very swooshable!....I may not play with my sets but i still swoosh them! UCS sets are unwieldy and overpriced! With the parts wasted on a hubristic UCS set you could build 3 or 4 large normal sets!!! THATS A WASTE OF BRICKS!
