White hope? Forget that crap. Ray was arguably the best fighter pound for pound, ever. What is not up for debate is that Ray was the smartest fighter ever. He would break down a fighter very early on and set a pace once he was satisfied with the intel. Ray was brilliant and I am so glad that I'm old enough to have seen him in his prime. The 1970's and 1980's Boxing can never be duplicated again. Google may be a lot of things but with TH-cam, we get to relive those years. I can recall going to the Spectrum in Philly to watch a fight on closed circuit TV. This was before Cable. We had a neighbor who was a Light Heavyweight, Mike Rossman. The most dominant fighter I ever saw was Taofelo Stevenson from Cuba. The scariest was Iron Mike. So many great fighters I would get carpal tunnel if I had to list them all.
Great fight! Ray Leonard was the "GOAT" In his weight class, and more. Yet some people are born "Haters, or Sore Losers" anyone that would think, let alone say. Underrated performance by Leonard. Many people don't realize that before this bout, Lalonde had KO wins over former champion Leslie Stewart and contender Eddie Davis (who went the distance with Michael Spinks).
The best thing about this fight was that Leonard was starting to decline, which makes fights with great champions more compelling. People really forget how much Lalonde smacked him up early in this fight and had him in trouble. But to his enduring credit, SRL was a DOG...this comeback and finish is legitimately one of the most emotional things I've watched in sports. Everyone watching at my mom's boyfriend's house was hootin' and hollerin' when he finished Lalonde.
Leonard is one of the greatest technical boxers who ever lived. To KO a LH later in the fight is amazing. Since the day he began as a welterweight he had that aura that he just can't be beat. With Duran it was more intimidation. You knew, and so did Leonard, as well as Duran, that he would have KOed Duran in their rematch - hence, no mas. Leonard's conditioning was top notch. And his combos were vicious and accurate.
He wouldn’t have koed Duran. Duran was too tough. Leonard just frustrated him. If leonard could of koed him he would of done it the first fight when they were trading punch for punch
@@spenser6353There's no would have or he's going to on boxing. It's a fight. Leonard wasn't a big puncher, he mostly ended fights with accumulation of punches in his stoppages. Every boxer will want to finish fight before the end. Every fighter will also believe he's going to win and believe he will stop his opposition.
What an excellent fight this was. Leonard, as he proved with Hearns, Kalule, Hagler and Lalonde, was never afraid to take on physically more imposing fighters. Lalonde fought probably the fight of his life and possibly persuaded Ray that the light heavy division was just a little too big. Ray never returned to this weight.
Hi Eric, I know it's a long time ago since you made your comments which are very good but I would just like to point out that Leonard never fought at the actual LHW weight of 175 lbs , Lalonde was forced to lose about 8-10 lbs and fight him at a catchment weight of around mid 160lbs . Don't get me wrong, Ray's an unbelievable Boxer and ATG but he was treated a lot different from the rest when it came to stipulations , he even got to fight T Hearns in their return at a catchment weight of no more than 164 lbs despite them both being SMW , 168lbs Champions , Tommy would have had to pay a 500K fine for each Ib over so he weighed in about 162 , then he floors him twice in separate RDS and only gets a draw , ridiculous really . Take care 🥊🥊
@@francishegarty8087Hi francis I know it's been a long time since you made this comment however every excuse you made for lalonde, and Tommy hearns neither fighter used the Factors you have to explain why they Lost BTW lalonde said he felt stronger faster, more powerful at the weight he fought Ray Leonard at than any other weight so how did you come to the conclusion that it hindered his ability to win ?
@@BrianWarren-hl6pv Great to hear from you Brian , yes get lots of what you say there and in truth , I never knew Lalonde made such comments so from that angle , yes your totally right and he didn't use that as an excuse as you've explained , however , the Hearns rematch with Leonard , which ended in a draw , was a farce when it came to the actual weight that they fought at as they were both , SMW , 168lbs Champions. At that time , it was same day weigh ins and Leonard had a weight stipulation where neither guy could weigh in over a catchment weight of 165lbs or they'd have to pay a 500k dollar fine for each 1lbs over , how ridiculous was that , anyways , and I've always said this , Leonard showed an enormous amount of heart and was brave as a lion on many occasions especially in both those fights when he got up off the canvas 3 times , once V Lalonde and twice V Hearns to get 1 win and 1 draw so kudos to him for that however I still feel a 175lbs Lalonde and a 168lbs Hearns , beats him but that's just my humbe opinion . 🥊🥊
@@francishegarty8087 I'm glad you replied Francis, what people overlook about Ray Leonard is his opponent weight nor size make it difficult for him to over come because what he brings to the fight is a boxing IQ that's second to none his conditioning is phenomenal and his skill set is adaptable too any style of boxing, that's why I believe lalonde weight no matter how heavy he is, that'll never be enough to beat SRL .
@@joshposh7239 They used a great camera angle for this fight. Gets the viewer really inside the ring! Great commentary and the crowd is right into it too. All adds up to a fight you can watch repeatedly!
He was stronger than people gave him credit for. However, Lalonde had a big punch too but he was weight drained for this fight. Remember, this in when fighters had to weigh-in on the day of the fight and Lalonde had to come in 8lbs lighter than his usual fighting weight. At 6'2" Lalonde was already a strain bean at 175 and by the 5th Lalonde was spent, not because of anything Leonard and had done. Lalonde had won the first rounds on everyone's scorecard, not paid to be a judge.
Yeah, Chavez vs Taylor I think has this beat. Poor Taylor, he was brilliant that night, but the beating he took in the later rounds cost him his prime.
Na'ah...this isn't Marciano vs Walcott or Archie Moore vs Yves Durelle or even Castillo/Corrales. But it was a fantastic comeback by SRL in the decline of his career.
Super Kyle too true!! Look at the interview Ray gave about the Dave Boy Green fight. Dave foolishly angered Ray by growling at him just before the bell. Ray actually thanked him after for making it an easy knock out. They are friends to this day 👍
Get the impression of Lalonde as a smart fighter, always coming in with a good game plan, but physically clumsy, compared to someone like Sugar Ray anyway
FROM WHAT I GATHER DONNY COMING DOWN TO THAT WEIGHT MADE HIM A WEAKER FIGHTER AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE LATER ROUNDS HAS HIS FITNESS IS OFF THE HOOK FROM THE MARATHONS HE RUNS . Interesting fact about the company that handled the pay per view and closed circuit TV rights for this fight. The company that handled those responsibilities was Titan Sports. That name may not ring a bell with people but it (at the time) was the corporate name for a company that helped usher in PPV events. Titan Sports was the parent company of the then World Wrestling Federation. So Vince McMahon handled the television rights via PPV and closed circuit broadcasts. FWIW the host was Roy Firestone who at the time had a good talk show on ESPN that was called Up Close(or would later be called that)
“For All The Gold,” as was the tagline for Leonard-Lalonde, may have been a criticised and controversial promotion, but it ended up being a very good, exciting fight. And all these years later the fans who were there remember it almost as well as the two practitioners do.

This fight was bullshit. Leonard made the 175 champion come down to 168 but they fought for the 175 belt and the vacant 168 belt on the same night. As a result, Leonard is called a 5 division champion. I don't consider Leonard to be real 5 division champion.
Ray was just the total package. He was also able to take his game to another level under pressure. That was what separated him from guys like Hearns and De La Hoya. He is FAR better then Floyd.
Leonard...fantastic and picking his opponents and then retiring. Then coming out of retirement to 'pick' another target. The true fighter Thomas Hearns. He stayed in the game and fought everyone.
Yea and got knocked out by everybody. Sometimes its wise to take a break to regroup. Hearns just fought and fought and fought and now he is braindamaged. Should a fighter become braindamaged just so that people on youtube can call them "true fighters" ? I dont think it's worth it.
Brian better puncher yes but better boxer absolutely not... i don't think anyone was a better pure boxer than floyd and i definitely don't think anyone felt the ring as well as floyd. Leonard had really average defense and got hit alot, also pretty one dimensional and rarely controlled the flow of the fight against the best. Don't get me wrong sugar ray is one of the best of all time but had many flaws in his game

I remember the hype for this fight. It was everywhere. I was in the 4th grade, and remember it was on every commercial on cox cable in California. I remember waking up the morning after, hoping Lalonde had won, and seeing that he had indeed lost, but fought a good fight. Great fight.
i dont care what any one says that was not a real knockdown it was more of leonard ducking his head and losing his balance and lalonde punching him in the head as he bent down to back out of the break, leonard had true knock downs of lalonde. not a good call to say it was a knock down it wasent!!! name another welterweight who went up to light heavy weight and knocked out a champion nobody, after being off for some time, this guy is the goat!!! had he not hurt his eye he would have been the best ever hands down he had it all in his prime every thing, power stamina, ring generalship, speed, a great chin to boot and the heart of a girzzly Bear!!! just a Beast.
Athletes with pure class. To sit next to each other and talk about the fight humbly. But it must've been pretty hard to sit there watching the playback while they describe him getting knocked out. But they had great sense of humor. Pro's!
No mention by anybody doing the fight that Lalonde had to make a weight 7 lbs lighter than what he was used to. That could not have helped him. Lalonde was used to making 175 and had to cut down to 168.
Right ... Yet, they called this a light heavyweight championship fight, Ray became the LHW Champion ... Who's buying that ? They fought at SMW, 168 when LHW is at 175
Brilliant points Joe and Johnny , agree with you both here , there was 2 Titles on the line here , Donny's 175 LHW , and the newly branded 168 SMW Title and was sanctioned by the WBC but was fought at 168 , Donny being the bigger , naturally heavier man , was forced to boil down to this weight and considering he floored Leonard earlier on , would be interesting to see if he could recover from getting hit by a Donny shot at 175 . Just 1 year after this , Leonard would fight Hearns in a rematch , both were 168 SMW Champions and it was sanctioned for this weight but once again , Leonard had a weight stipulation inserted where each fighter could not weigh in over 164 and if either broke this , had to pay a forfeit of 500K , per 1lb , how ridiculous was that . Hagler was in the commentary box for that fight in 89 and said it was ridiculous and also slated the judges for calling a draw , despite Tommy being the better man with 2 knock-downs in separate rounds , all the best lads 🥊🥊
There are very little Canadian fighters in the top level because Canadian kids have better options that getting into that way of making a living. Besides boxing is not a well respected or highly look upon as a sport.

I admire Sugar Ray Leonard for his heart, coming back against Donny LaLonde, but I felt Leonard robbed the Late Marvin Hagler of a well deserved rematch.
Sugar Ray Leonard is my favorite boxer of all time he seemed to always come back even when he was losing.....Leonard was more then flash he also had power.... LaLonde was an easy target standing straight up LaLonde had more power but less experience....
Leonard’s leverage is insane. Nobody through them light that nowadays. He hangs in the pocket in danger just to unload. I wish fights were like this now.
Glad you noticed that. His pocket work is dangerous but he had the heart to stay in that pocket and throw em. Even against a light heavy weight. Superb in that pocket then that speed kicks in
Yes it was heat exhaustion that stopped Sugar Ray Robinson. Over 200 Pro fights. He would have an epic 15 round fight And just 3 month's later have another epic 15 round fight. Fighters of that era were amazing. Fighters in later years have a tough 12 round fight. And don't fight again for another year.
At 0:07 seconds. I still have that cover that came on the cable guide that month with this picture on it and I have a shirt. An image burned into my mind forever. Thanks for this upload.
I was at that fight with my dad. I still remember, the excitement that came over the crowd when Lalonde started taking it to Leonard. He (Lalonde) also came jogging past a bunch of us runners on Churchill Dr. before the fight. It almost seemed like a "Rocky"moment. He quipped "mind if I run through? ". Classy guy that seemed to have been forgotten in this city
He was weight-drained. Thats why his emaciated/badly weight-drained body gave in when it did, otherwise it very likely would've went the distance. LaLonde had no choice though cause he was the begger, and beggers cant be choosers. He needed the big money payday. He Had to meet the weight-limit /catch-weight demands of Leonard in order to get this big money fight to be made for himself. With Leonard-Duran II it was obviously even much worse as Duran had to go from 230 lbs down to 147 in a matter of what,10 weeks..?! Now that is some insane emaciation right there, but hey,it was all about having to meet Leonard's demands of having they're rematch happen within such a short span of time and thus horribly hindering Duran's proper preparation. Boxing promoters made Leonard they're darling very early on though as he was seen as the miniaturized successor of the legacy of the great Muhammed Ali.
Beautiful work done by Ray! He was one of the most beautiful finishers and all around fighters we'll ever see. Lelonde was game for the first 4 but after that Ray found his rhythm and broke him down like a legitimate all time great.

Your statement is untrue, this was contested at Super Middleweight. Check the weights, the light heavyweight title was on the line but neither guy weighed above the super middleweight limit. Lalonde had fought his entire career at 175 or above. Ray Leonard got special treatment, being the only fighter in the history of the sport allowed to fight for two separate titles in two weight divisions. As I said before, SRL made sure Lalonde's few advantages were comprises. Hearns beat his ass n #2.
Ray knew he had this fight before the second round started. He was almost in the middle of the ring before the bell rang for the second. Similar with Ali. Ray has that way of knowing when he has the other guy beat. Lalonde is no slouch. But Ray made it seem that way. That's vintage Sugar Ray Leonard. All white commentaries is obviously bias. Leonard was smart waiting for the later rounds. Conditioning is top priority with Ray. Lalonde really believed he was going to walk thru Ray. That knock down made those commentators jump with glee. No way. I had Ray knocking this guy out in the last round. Unfortunately it was earlier. haha

So many great fighters I would get carpal tunnel if I had to list them all.
how would he break them down early?
Great fight! Ray Leonard was the "GOAT" In his weight class, and more. Yet some people are born "Haters, or Sore Losers" anyone that would think, let alone say. That "Sugar Ray Leonard" hand picked his opponents must be drunk, high or plain ignorant to the sport of boxing?
@@spenser6353good point
@@spenser6353There's no would have or he's going to on boxing. It's a fight. Leonard wasn't a big puncher, he mostly ended fights with accumulation of punches in his stoppages. Every boxer will want to finish fight before the end. Every fighter will also believe he's going to win and believe he will stop his opposition.
@@Brizy93 Sounds like you agree with what I said. What are you trying to say?
Maybe Duran was weak from having to make the weight in the return fight.

Sugar Ray Leonard had a big time punch! One of the best pound for pound fighters in boxing history.

Other than prime Roy Jones Jr, Leonard Is greatest fighter of all time
He was stronger than people gave him credit for.

FWIW the host was Roy Firestone who at the time had a good talk show on ESPN that was called Up Close(or would later be called that)
What happened to titan sports i remember them making video games in the 90s
They promoted the fights on their wrestling shows including their PPV Summerslam, and Sugar Ray was there.

This fight was bullshit. Leonard made the 175 champion come down to 168 but they fought for the 175 belt and the vacant 168 belt on the same night. As a result, Leonard is called a 5 division champion. I don't consider Leonard to be real 5 division champion.

The belts don’t matter he still knocked the guy out who clearly was was much much much bigger than him
Ray was just the total package. He was also able to take his game to another level under pressure. That was what separated him from guys like Hearns and De La Hoya. He is FAR better then Floyd.
i dont no about far better than floyd but u can argue the level of competition tho.
Leonard...fantastic and picking his opponents and then retiring. Then coming out of retirement to 'pick' another target. The true fighter Thomas Hearns. He stayed in the game and fought everyone.
I would say that Leonard is definitely a better boxer than Floyd, but not by much.
Who the heck is that guy right after the KO that Leonard shoves the hell out of the way? What's that all about?
I don’t know why Richard Steele let him continue after the first knock down. He could barely even stand up. Horrible call

Unfortunately it was earlier. haha
