Garou: Mark of the Wolves is 2D fighting game set in the Fatal Fury universe and is one of the first titles that really impressed me when I discovered the Neo Geo. SNK had built a reputation for creating some of the best arcade fighting games around and Garou continues this tradition.
Despite the game taking place during a "King of Fighters" tournament, the game distances itself from that particular series by featuring purely one-versus-one battles with a cast of (mostly) original characters not seen in the KOF games. As is typical with most games of the genre, the player must fight through a series of increasingly challenging fights against other characters before facing not one, but two boss characters.
Once a character has been selected, the player must also make a choose which T.O.P style to use. The system divides the fighter's health bar into three segments and allows the player to choose a segment for the T.O.P to be active. Once active, the system increases the damage of players attacks, allows the character to perform more combat moves and even regenerates health. The system provides an advantage to the player whilst it's active and the player must decide whether they want to take advantage from the start at the fight, keep it in reserve to mount a comeback when losing.
Each fight is a best-of-three rounds fight where each combatant must claim victory over their opponent using a variety of kicks, punches and special attacks. As with other fighting games, attacking your opponent also charges up the 'Special' gauge located to the bottom left/right of the screen. Once filled, a swift combination of stick-waggling and button-pressing can unleash even more devastating versions of the fighter's special moves. Although these moves can be blocked, getting hit by one often means the fight will be over pretty quickly.
Since this is a game that places emphasis on well-timed strikes, blocks and counters, it's crucial that the controls be responsive and precise enough to ensure the player has total control over their character. Fret not, for the game handles extremely well and makes the game great fun to play.
As with many of the later generation Neo Geo titles, Garou looks absolutely fantastic. The boasts high-colour sprites with tons of detail and brilliant animation. One of the things I really love about these 2D fighting games is attention to detail that the artists give to the folds and wrinkles in the material of the characters clothes; although many 3D games employ physics systems to try and convey realistic movement of cloth, these effects still don't look as good as hand-crafted efforts on display here (in my opinion at least).
Sound-wise, the game features some thumping audio tracks and equally crunching sound effects. Although most of the music playing during each fight is likely original, whoever wrote the scores must have been a big fan of Robert Miles' "Children" because you can clearly hear it featured during Rock Howard's stage!
With excellent core game mechanics, controls and graphics that are still colourful and vibrant today, Garou: Mark of the Wolves is a great game and remains one of my favourite fighting games of all time.

SNK were the masters of pixel art, i mean, the neo geo was underpowered in comparison of the cps2, but artists managed to make a game with graphics and animations between cps2 and cps3 (the cps3 was the last beast of 2D games), man, miss those old days

Garou is much more beautiful, look at the special effects and fireballs, and the animation is better.

If Street Fighter III: Third Strike is the greatest fighting game ever made, then Garou: Mark of the Wolves, is in my opinion, the second greatest fighting game ever made. I love this game.

And just because this game "killed" the Fatal Fury franchise, does not make this a bad game. SNK as a whole just wasn't doing too good around this time.

Nothing too fancy like KOF XIII, but a quality similar to CVS1 & 2 would suffice. Those SNK characters in Capcom's style were superb!

This game has two Game Overs, one after Continue after lose and one after Complete the Game!
Animation wise you can see this game a rival of SFIII (1997) but CPS3 system's 384×224 resolution makes difference to NeoGeo's 320x224 resolution
It doesn't even come close to SFIII's animation. SFIII has way more fight animations, making the gameplay much smoother. The game also has overall superior body physics.
@@YourCreepyUncle. indeed, but we can´t deny that garou is basically the most powerful game visualy on all the neo geo catalog, they pushed the NG to his limits with the work animation, of course SF3 it´s better (the cps3 was a monster) but the neo geo was an arcade that by the time, had nearly 2 decades nearly untouched... so yea, SF3 is my favorite fighting game of all time, but SNK they were always the real masters of pixel art

It’s definitely not a rip. The composer is a huge fan of Robert miles and just techno in general. This is very common in snk games. “Surprise you’re dead” is sampled in kof, among many other songs
@@deantewhite2588 Audio on the Neo Geo is generated via FM synthesis and Robert Miles is piano / epiano, so naturally not a true rip - rather a figure of speech. Still, it's the same copied melody and bassline. It was just interesting if anything. Sampling on the other hand (if your example is correct), will be a rip, since being a 'sample' would make it a direct copy of the source material.

It's still odd. The character didn't come from Yugoslavia. That song was written for the children coming from a lost country.
My favorite characters to play with were Kim Dong Hwan and Rock Howard.

How did u get this rom to work
You need to download the neogeo.zip file and put in your ROMs folder in your MAME directory. You might have to search around for it though, because there are many different versions of it. Then there are also different versions of the garou.zip file as well. You have to find the one with kf-neo.sma inside it. (P.S - Don't click on those links. They lead nowhere. TH-cam just takes anything with a period in it and makes it a hyperlink)
EDIT: Okay I remember where I got mine from. Just Google search kf-neo.sma and go to the Winkawaks link (should be the second search result)

The animation and smoothness are on the same level but as far as soundtracks sf3 is better but mark of wolves has better presentation.
