  • Rarely to record stores leave me speechless, but Wax Trax is not your typical record shop. More rare records per square foot than any other shop I've been in. Everywhere you look there are the rare and super rare records.
You won't get away cheap tho; no $50 records for $5, the staff know their stuff and will work with you on a fair market price. Be nice to them and they'll be nice back (I'm speaking from experience as I bought a small but powerful stack). cheers!

He has the records that you might want, but they are priced to not sell. More of a museum.

The large inventory is not a surprise if, in fact, none of the records are priced. I believe it is a cardinal sin for a record shop to have no prices, and then have them looked up on the fly on eBay or elsewhere. This is a disgusting business practice, and I would never shop there. Disclaimer, I have not been to this store, nor do I know how they operate.. I'm just reacting to other comments. I did, however, experience this in a New Jersey shop, and it was truly repugnant.

After watching your video, I decided to check this place out..I thinking about my little visit, I was overwhelmed by the selection of Records that was in the store. When I came in, he stopped me and explained the layout of the store and was a little snotty when I told him I was interested in Jazz section. I went down there and there was another customer who warned me that he charges top dollar for his Bluenote albums. Nothing was marked and you only found out about the cost when you brought your selection to the counter. In the half hour I was there, I chose 5 albums. Unfortunately only one of them I could afford while the others were priced over $200.00. Okay, I thought, I got the one record, but in thinking, if he was going to charged so much for his inventory, I wish he would have treated them accordingly by cleaning the records and putting them in sleeves. Well, it was interesting and I don't think I would make a return visit. But I think collectors should go for the experience.

I visited Vegas earlier this year and stopped at this store. The selection is top notch but the majority of these albums can still be located at other stores elsewhere. As previously commented, none of the albums are priced. I brought a used Accept-Stalingrand album to the front desk and was quoted $50.00. I laughed and left. I waited till I returned home and bought it for new for $20.00 cheaper.

Notice how none of the records have price tags? That should tell you something about Wax Trax right off the bat. He has all kinds of killer records because no one's dumb enough to pay twice the going rate for something. Owner probably wants $40 for that crap Loggins and Messina record. Go read Wax Trax yelp reviews. That'll tell you everything.

Yeah, this shop's approach and the owner's style can be misconstrued. I've found him to be extremely pleasant albeit with a very dry sense of humor, which reminded me of Groucho Marx. It could be initially off-putting to some but I found him fun to deal with and reasonable when it came to buying product. I was nice to him and he was nice to me, and I walked out of his shop with some great stuff (I posted them here: instagram.com/p/BleSlHBDR77/?taken-by=vinylguide ). You will not find a $500 record for $20 here, he knows what he has and is a businessman. If you start with that expectation, the rest can fall into place rather quickly.

The Vinyl Guide Sorry, I was a little drunk when I commented. My family lives in Vegas, so I visit at least once a year. I've been to Wax Trax once, but my experience was so bad, I haven't gone back. Dude basically perused my small stack of records, looked me up and down and said "$500". I had to whittle my stack down to one Jimmy Castor Bunch record (Troglodyte). I've been tempted to go back to look for just one or two grails, but haven't brought myself to do it.

The reason they accumulated so many great records with multiple pressings of the same rare item is due to how they price which is to price on demand. The reason for this is due to the fluctuations in the market. Can you imagine having to change prices on that many records? Clearly the price on the fly method hurts their sales but it’s how they do it. They will haggle with you so pick out what you want and make a fair offer.

Nate - check out the low star reviews on YELP. As you watch this video did you notice nothing has a price on it? Everything and I mean everything, has no price. If you are interested in a record you bring your record up to the front desk. The owner or manager then looks up the current market value on various sites similar to or actually to Discogs or Rootsvinyl. Only then are you quoted a price. Personally if I want to pay full price I will just go on Discogs select NM- and send my money in. However if price is no object this is the place to go to due to their selection.

Hey Hoss, thanks for the comment and yes I understand the drill, nothing is priced up front which I understand is different than most shops. I did purchase records from him and we did discuss the pricing. Price is always an object and I'm happy to say he did work with me on it and I'm satisfied with my purchases. He's got his own style and quite frankly, I think he's got such a unique shop and collection that the model of having everything priced wouldn't work well or he'd be constantly changing them due to shifts in demand. Wax Trax is a unique shop and his business model isn't the standard one because of it. Whether it works for people or not is up to them. cheers!

There's actually a known defect on a certain reissue of Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue. On one side, the vinyl is incorrectly shaped near the spindle hole causing the reverse side to have a warp when played.

I'm a "stereo" guy, never cared much for "mono" pressings! Of course I've never heard them on a proper "mono cartridge", so they may sound amazing, IDK! It's all about the soundstage for me!

The place is a mess. We have a record store here Denver also called Wax Trax. It is also a dump. This is not character. It is just a place were it is hard to find things. I am sure the prices are high as well. Avoid stores like this.
