A FORTY stone man has vowed to beat the bulge by powering through countless 5km runs - and plans to conquer a marathon. Derek Mitchell weighed 625lbs when he embarked on his epic weight-loss quest in March 2014. After overcoming a soda addiction and starting his gruelling exercise regime, Derek, from Kansas City, USA, has shrunk to 564lbs and hopes to eventually slim down to a svelte 225lbs.

For someone his size. A 5km run is unbelievably impressive.
And also not good for his knees. It is nice that he is putting in the effort, but Id strongly advise he does some simple exercises to burn calories. Running might backfire and further complicate the situation.
Luka Ružič Simple walking is very effective. I burned about 6 kilos of fat from walking and eating less + healthier alone.
@@Devil-tm4nu Walking is definitely better than running for someone as overweight as the man in the video. Im only 70kg and had minor knee problems running on tarmac with regular cheap sneakers.
They should use a treadmill that submerges up to your ankles, that way there'll be less pressure.
As a baseball athlete during my high school and college days this man is impressive, i cant even do 10k!

@@Rockking1111 In relation to weight lifting: Work a part of the body, rest a day, work a different part of the body, rest a day, repeat.
As for running: I have no idea. If your goal is to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in. I imagine that involves working out every day. If it begins to stress your body, I suggest doing low impact high caloric burning activities, like elliptical, and swimming.

A fat person with an actual medical issue - tries his best
A fat person who is fine otherwise - Wah wah why are you so mean its not my fault fat is healthy dont body shame me!
this guy tries his best!
Being fat is a medical issue. All fat people suffer from some sort of metabolic issue. The difference is he has it worse than most and he's trying to do something about it.
@@joemann7971 that's why he is better
@Mike Hunt You eat too much because you have a medical condition. It's not the other way around. There is a thing called insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome is what many experts are considering this epidemic as a whole. Insulin resistance doesn't mean you're diabetic. You can have perfectly normal blood sugars and still be insulin resistant. I know I am/was. Diets like the ketogenic diet help reverse it. It's not as bad as this guy that has a separate medical issue, that even doing something like keto probably wouldn't help much.
FireGrim Gaming well thank you
This guy is really a MAN, even with an actual medical condition he stands up to his obesity and does something about it, he learned what he needed to do and did it. Change starts in you.

N W have respect for others. Maybe he had issues in his life and food was his escape. Some people fall into massive depression and their way of calming themselves down is eating and not paying attention to the real world.
@@codnez8979 That's still their problem, if they chose to make their coping mechanism unproductive then you shouldn't have to respect them for that.

This is what we should be promoting... Not fat acceptance bs
well said
we should not promote obesity
we should promote health and that does not mean that you have to be thin. as long as your weight has nothing to do with your health i think its okay.. but if you get any kind of health problems because youre overweight please lose some weight
Everything starts with education.
Mandatory P.E. is probably the only exercise this guy ever got.
With it should be lessons how to keep yourself in shape.
And being able to grasp what's on the ingredient list of a bottle of coke,... should be taught.
I mean, I think both are fine. Can't we just NOT shame overweight people/accept that people are sometimes overweight? As is seen in this video, Derek is taking care of himself but he's not going to magically be average weight overnight. Why shame him in the process? The body takes longer to catch up to the mind, if that makes sense. "Fat acceptance" at the core is about not judging a book by its cover.
Then stop bullying and embarrassing fat people that are exercising.
There’s literally no one making fun in the comments so stop saying that 😐
Thats what i was thinking. Like i am looking for comments where i see someone talking badly about him. They must had those thoughts in their own heads.
@Jack St.Clare But those comments came before yours
I don't think it's necessarily directed at people on this particular video's comments. People make fun of fat people ALL the time without knowing anything except that they are fat. If someone saw this guy in the grocery store, or checking his mail, or at the bank, or god forbid a restaurant etc, they draw conclusions and don't assume he runs 5Ks or that he is even trying to do something about his weight. I can't tell you how many times i've seen people film or take pics of fat people in public just to make fun of them.
Your so right

@ what are you on my guy? Women have testosterone. It's in a smaller quantity, yes, but it is very much needed to function normally, if it is too low they have problems with fertility, mood, libido, periods etc. This is why women, after menopause, usually get hairier/balder- the typical male effects of testosterone are overshadowed by estrogen up until that point. Also some women produce more testosterone than normal from conditions such as PCOS and can get hairier, have irregular periods, etc.

@@summergolden 2023
he’s doing ok but, life caught up w/ him. he gained more weight, & his body started giving up on him & couldn’t finish his last 5 & 10k but says he’ll be back at it
@@synysterxp470you mean he was lazy
@@moblack5883 if that’s what u think an injury is, then sure.
I have lost 80 pounds and I have 50 more to go. I have been out of the gym for 2 weeks but this man has given me inspiration for real. Sure now I can buy normal clothes in a store now and to 15 push ups like nothing when a year ago I could barely get up out of my chair. But he gives me inspiration to keep going and to break my goals that I have set. Thank you sir! Keep on running!!!
THIS IS SO GREAT! I really hope he achieves his goal and even more so! (: you go, man! keep trying!
564lbs, low testosterone issues, I can only imagine the pain you are in physically and mentally.
I am blown away at what you are achieving. You have an amazing amount of drive and determination to over come what your body and mind must be telling you. Huge props brother. I really hope they can get your hormones all figured out so you can feel normal again.
He is an inspiration for all of us.
Keep going, we all are supporting.
You go man! I'm really happy for you!
This guy looks like an amazing cook!
@Chara Kara . That's not amazing cooking. It's called normal cooking and knowing how to prepare real food. Kind if sad if you think what he is fixing is amazing
Lol he sliced a zucchini and put chicken on a frying pan thats not that hard
BroccoliBeefed congrats on commenting on a year old comment
If slicing veg and frying chicken on a pan is "amazing cooking" to you, you mustn't know how to even make toast.
K4 Josiah I thought the same thing
Man!! You are a legend
Love and wishes from India
Stay healthy, run long and spread smile 🤗
keep it going.. proud of you..you will succeed.. you will win..
It might not be advisable tho, people this size would better take on swimming to lose some weight before running, at this size it puts quite a strain on his joints and might damage his ankles and knees.
Jack Mcslay thinking the same thing about his knees. I ran at 165 and 180 pounds. My knees back and neck are all wrecked.
You are not wrong, I’ve seen human sized sticks suffer from joint issues from running.
Joint _issues_ have more to do with lack of PROPER nutrition than movement...
sinmore11 also correct, when it comes down to it the unpopular opinion is you either have bad genetics, mediocre genetics or good genetics. Plain and simple. BUT don’t say that too pound or you’ll get lynched 😂
God bless u brother keep doing what you doing ..the lord is with u all the way....I hope you make it to Honolulu marathon...good luck god speed an god bless u
Good job! Keep going and never give up
I've been bodybuilding for 37 years and in all that time I never met a person with more courage in a pair of sweats than Derek!! Good man!!!
shed the pounds while shredding his knees, he's got determination
Yeah I was thinking this isn't healthy for his joints
@@josht2604 Yeah he really should consider cycling instead of running atleast until he has slimmed down. By the time he has lost all that extra weight his knees will be destroyed permanently.
It’s good that he’s doing something about it! This is inspiring
About 5 1/2 years ago I was just a little over 800 pounds and just as he began i begin and I did 5K 10K got some trophies first place second place and I am at 242 lb now. Last year I was hit by a car when I was out going for a run and it was getting closer to winter time and I gained some weight and getting back to running has been hard because I've been hit by a car so I started pedaling a mountain bike and I got hit by a car on my mountain bike, I got a better mountain bike this year and some new running shoes But, never give up. my hat is off to you, keep it going don't give up
pork chõp props man👍
Nick A it's a little bit of both. The driver is not looking where they're going and I got a cocky mindset when I am out exercising
pork chõp
where do you live that you have wreckless drivers? Nice job on weight loss journey. I'm still trying but no matter how much weight I lose, I gain it back in a day or two. Drives me nuts. Still not giving up.
Jose Ramirez Chavez don't give up, yes, I had gotten to a point where I was gaining weight not losing but if you keep your exercise on and incorporate some vegan meals and try to avoid Dairy it will all start to come together. I live in Fort Worth Texas and most of me getting hit by cars is because I'm arrogant I've lost a lot of weight and I got a big head of confidence when I strap on my running shoes
RoguelikeMike I'll let you in on a little secret, I do got heart issues and I'm also type 2 diabetic so, I have almost no cartilage left in my knees and I've been hit by car so I got a limp. I don't want to give up , I'm 242 lb now. LOL, I have thought about exercising indoors and wanting to purchase a treadmill being outside feels good
This person motivates me to do jogging in the morning! Thankyou so much for still continue on striving hard for yourself! That's power! 💪💕
Deam, a legend who actually tries to do something.
Who ever disliked has no heart
when he showed the tattoo i first thought he was gonna say 'its good that i have such a big leg'
tbh this is great though. is there an update vid or something thats more up to date?
He probably broke his ankles, running ain't the best thing to do when you're massively obese because the stress on your ligaments while running is around 9 times as much as your bodyweight.
He's doin it. Lots of people talk, but this man is DOING. And he's inspiring. He's lifting his candle and illuminating a path for others. Great story here.
pfpublius Someone commented that currently he gained another 30 lbs and can’t make rent due to the pandemic.
@@taoist32 yeah, could be. I didn't really look past this vid. I think part of me was ok where it left off regardless how it went long term.
Side note, it was particularly touching to me because due to injury from running, I no longer can. 5k was my jam. Deep down, i knew his knees would not sustain the stress long term, so i had an idea how it would end up. That said, i still think his achievements highlighted here show a spark, a glimmer of hope. I truly hope he continues his journey regardless of any interim setbacks.
Thank you for that update. I did notice some comments, but I believe Abe Lincoln when he said "don't believe everything you read on the interwebs."
2:17 - uh oh
hes referring to how all the stuff fell out of the burrito when he bit into it.
Scarecrow7 😂
That's the worst
Scarecrow7 I like when stuff falls out my burrito so I have something to eat when I'm done w it lol
Scarecrow7
Clearly an unskilled taco eating he needs to improve his form.
Man, I'm 265 and can't do what he can do. Inspiring.
what 5 miles in 4 hours
Why? Is it because a lack of time? Physical disability? If you don't mind me asking, of course!
Dude I was 287 two months ago yesterday I hit 265 we can do it together.
Faceless that’s pretty old, old man
Good on him!
Derek is a positive man
He cares about himself in a good way
Be more like Derek
At least he is trying...good for him...
