Maybe the board is too easy for the mice to grip but I'm actually impressed by the mice agility to jump out
That's what I was thinking.
A plastic paddle might work better.
Or cover the board in laminate.
Maybe some oil or butter instead bait on the bottom of the bucket work against jumping off the ground

Mice and rats are ridiculously agile animals. They're kind of amazing.
Those little devils that got away need to be caught in deep water. Grease the board with peanut oil.

I do agree on having a deeper bucket. I would also recommend making the paddle out of material that the mice can't grip on, like metal.
Or maybe just sanding down the wood or giving it a coating
and put a cat at the end of the bucket
If you really wanted to go overkill, plastic with a coating of peanut oil. No way they’ll be able to grab on to that.
The board just needs to be slick plastic perhaps. Wonderful fun design!

I like how most of the mice didn't bother trying to escape once they discovered that the bottom of the bucket was full of sunflower seeds.
That mouse was a trapeze artist in a former life
I'll give it 5 stars for entertainment value. I think it's the best one yet.
This looks like a good idea one thing that might improve it is instead of wood use either plexi glass or real glass with smooth edges they would have a harder time griping it with their claws.

@@snappycattimesten just as an example, here where i live non-native ladybugs were introduced via food imports and they have driven the native ladybugs to near extinction. non-native animals also introduce non-native diseases and parasites that native species aren't used to dealing with and have no resistance to.
Very entertaining watching mice holding on and some finally losing their grip, this one really made me laugh good and made my day.

Peanut oil and a glass bowl was one of only a couple traps that I actually got results from. The platform or teeter totter styles never took off for me, although the design looks good.
put a thin coating of vegetable oil on the board, then the mouse gets a light oiling on its paws and it loses grip and drops faster and cannot grip to leap out via the greasy board and its greasy paws
Definitely works - just need a higher bucket to stop crawl outs ...
I like this trap. I'm so used to seeing the shorts every day that it's a treat (and sometimes a pleasant surprise, like today 😆) to get the longer form Monday and Friday videos.

You already mentioned the bucket not being deep enough, but I also believe the ply was too easy for the rodents to grip and as others mentioned, a plastic version should be more effective.
a counter weight so it always rests at an even flat position would work well too
I'm curious how well it would work with a board that was made out of something they couldn't grab on to ... like some hard plastic. Also, I'd add a weight to the bottom of the bracket to prevent the board from ever point straight down.
If the corners of the wood were sanded, round and waxed, I would think the mice would do less gymnastics and more "Kerplunking".
Shawn, add just a bit of peanut oil. They can't jump high if the're slipping. It wont take much.
The concept is good, but needs a much deeper bucket for that length of board.
Maybe board could be an inch or two shorter, but not too much shorter because otherwise mouse won't tip the board angle far enough to fall in. I agree a 7 gallon bucket would be better choice, or add water.
It definitely would need to be a deeper bucket as some of them did get back out or as you say Shawn a mini swimming pool at the bottom of the bucket for a no return!
Some of those wee beasties are really clever at sussing out how to get back onto the spindle xx Jean from Scotland.
I'm sure a bit of oil on the bottom would be good too if you don't want to buy another bucket and don't want to kill the little guys.
I loved this one. I'd love to see more videos of this with a larger bucket. It's kind of like a circus acrobat show.

Have used a similar trap with great results. The main difference is I used a plastic counterweighted disk that was a slightly smaller diameter than the bucket, so very slippery, and won’t allow the mice to jump out. Also some water in the bucket to stop jumping.
I use a dowel covered in pvc pipe and water in the bucket.

Place a counterweight at each side of the paddle. The paddle will return to a horizontal position after it dumps the mouse.
I keep thinking “dear mice” when he says “deer mice.”
Who cares whether or not this particular trap works. It's great fun just watching the mice spin around and plop into the bucket. Thanks for the entertainment.

Nice trap. You're getting closer to my dream of a Catapult mouse trap. If that thing was spring loaded and launched them out and away, they could be plopped into a nearby pond or collection tub. No parachutes included.
Would it work if the board is fixed along the metal rod, not across it? Could still be enough for the mice to lose their balance and fall down, and then more difficult to grab an edge to climb back on top of it.
Put an 8th of an inch of peanut oil in the bottom and more will hop in and they won't be able to jump out

I wouldn't make any plank from wood since their claws are pretty much designed to climb that material. Get a strip of stainless and give it a second go.
Switching to a piece of acrylic might help keep them from grabbing on when they jump.
You might want to make the board a tiny bit shorter too
making the board a little shorter may prevent the mice from jumping back up and escaping
If you don't want to use a deeper bucket, you could replace the wooden board with smoother, harder material, or maybe just epoxy the board.

I would use perspex instead of a grippy wood for the rotating platform.

All live bucket traps needs to be with a 5 foot bucket so the mice can't jump out.

Very simple solution to this trap, put water inside the bucket rat can't jump of enough water.
Or you don't need to use a higher bucket but a shorter board?
I would make the board out of PVC Plastic so they could not get a grip.
I think you could start a mouse circus.
Make the board out of very smooth plastic or Teflon.
maybe if the board was something more slick - like plexiglass - they wouldn't be able to hang onto it.

I put water in the bottom with antifreeze so the water doesn't freeze and they can't jump out.

I remember the bucket trap from a few videos ago that was nothing more than a bucket with a mouse ramp. Seeds and peanut butter was all that was needed. Seemed to be just as effective.🐀🪣

What if you add some water in your bucket theh couldn't jump off
or dont use a piece of wood but instead a piece of very smooth plastic so they cant hold on to well so they cant jump out at all as its just to slippery

If the Board was made of slippery plastic the mice could not jump to grab it and get out...
