      Actually the current campaign I'm doing now will be over soon an I'd made a huge leap by breaking away from the pally to just a gwf fighter. However in our next campaign I was looking to be a sorcerer an aasimar was definitely my choice of flavor, and so now I'm just working on how to build an all around tho mostly up front sorcerer.

      I love all of your posts. It was a really great help now that I’m trying to get back into Dnd. My favorite race is half elf and they never seem to get a spot at the table. LOL I guess that’s what comes with being one of the best. Do you have any recommendations for the best classes for half elf. My choice is initially going to be an oath of vengeance paladin. However, I want to develop a character similar to my own life. I don’t really want to use much magic and I’m quite tough and sneaky. However, I’m very good natured and not shady at all. I do however have a temper but it doesn’t show until I reach my threshold. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thank you for all of your amazing content. Because of you guys I bought a fifth edition manual and two starter kits. I also went to hero Forge and designed three characters for me and my wife and my daughter.

    Technically, Wild Magic could be a Fae origin, as it states in the players handbook that it can be a blessing from a Fae, but I totally agree that there could still be a fully Fae origin and I would love to see one.

    Warforged storm sorcerer with a two level dip into tempest domain cleric would be a cool way to make Iron Man. The integrated armor doesn’t have a strength requirement for the heavy armor setting just proficiency. Have yourself be powered by a magic storm sealed inside your core for theme.

    Sorcerer! Yay! I've played a few sorcerers and totally went out of the box in opposition of what you discussed here. My favorite was my shadow sorcerer. His backstory was that he was a patrol leader of his clan's infantry squad. He died in an ambush but the Raven Queen brought him back as a sorcerer with shadow magic. Even though he now has access to arcane magic, most of the time he still resorts to attacking foes in combat with his battle-axe and uses spells such as Misty Step and Absorb Elements to supplement melee combat. Being a Mountain Dwarf, he is able to wield the battle-axe and wear Medium Armor... not to mention the strength and con bonuses. And... once he gets that hound of ill-omen at 6th level... game on! Good episode guys!

    For me (Not counting UA Origins):
    Overall - Tiefling, Dragonborn
    Draconic Bloodline - Dragonborn, Kobold
    Wild Magic - Goblin (especially if the Player goes the Booyahg Booyahg Booyahg route)
    Divine Soul - Aasimar
    Shadow Magic - Shadar-Kai
    Storm Sorcery - Genasi (Air or Water), Eladrin, Sea Elf, Triton
    Pyromancer - Genasi (Fire), Summer Eladrin, Mephistopheles Tiefling

      Phoenix Sorcery - Fire Genasi, Summer Eladrin, Mephistopheles Tiefling
      Sea Sorcery - Water Genasi, Winter Eladrin, Triton, Sea Elf, Levistus Tiefling, Yuan-Ti Pureblood, Merfolk, Naga
      Stone Sorcery - DWARF, Goliath, DWARF, Zariel Tiefling, DWARF, Orc, DWARF, Half-Orc, Oh did I mention DWARF?

    • @Altyrell
      @Altyrell 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Though with the Stone Sorcery, since at 1st Level you get this as part of it: "At 1st level, your hit point maximum increases by 1, and it increases by 1 again whenever you gain a level in this class." Hill Dwarf (also has "Your hit point maximum increases by 1, and it increases by 1 every time you gain a level.") works beautifully because there isn't [tmk] anything that says that the two benefits don't stack. Which if that is the case at Level 1 you're looking at:
      6 + Con + 1 (SS) + 1 (HD) or 8 + Con. Then as you level you're looking at 1d6 + Con + 2 (SS & HD). At Level 4, if you're allowed to pick up Feats, I would pick up "Tough" because your Max HP increases by 2 x the Level you pick it up [+8] & you then gain +2 HP to your Max HP every level after, which by Level 20, you'll have gained a total of +40 HP to your Max HP from Tough.
      So, if say you have a Con of around 14/15 (+2 Mod), though as a Sorc, maybe hope for at least 16 (if you die roll) for a +3 Mod:
      Level 01: 6 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 10 to start out [Max HP = 10]
      Level 02: 1d6 + 2 + 1 + 1 = +5-10 [Max HP = 15-20]
      Level 03: 1d6 + 2 + 1 + 1 = +5-10 [Max HP = 25-30]
      Level 04: 1d6 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 8 = +13-18 [Max HP = 38-48]
      Level 05-20: 16d6 + 32 + 16 + 16 + 32 = +112-192 [Max HP = 150-240]
      So at Level 20, your Hill Dwarf Sorcerer of the Stone Sorcery Origin will have a Maximum HP of between 150 (if you rolled all 1's on the 1d6) & 240 (If you were to have rolled all 6's or took the max die roll of 6, if your HB Campaign were to have gone that route). Max HP of 150 - 240 isn't that bad to be honest, especially IF the Stone Sorcery & Hill Dwarf's respective affects do stack.

    My personal top three wouldn't be too different. In no particular order:
    1) Half-Elves. Stat wise, perfect. Can use your floating pluses for anything. Fey ancestry is great. Got darkvision. And two skills is nice to have when you're playing a class or background without skills you like. However, all the Half-Elf variants are pretty good. Drow has good spells, moon has a free wizard cantrip (aware about intelligence requirement, just pick something that you won't need to use your INT for like Presti, friends, mage hand, etc) and the wood elf for bonus weapons or the 35 movement is good.
    2) Tieflings: Having each variant (aside from flying feral) with innate spellcasting is great. So many good ones based on what you're trying to go for. I'm personally a huge fan of Glasya and Levistus myself. Resistance to fire is much appreciated too.
    3) Aasimar: They trade a skill proficiency for SO MANY OTHER FEATURES. Its insane how much Aasimars get out of the box. While the race lore does lend itself to Divine Soul i imagine if you wanna do some homebrewing/lore editing they could also easily fall into any other bloodline. Being heralded by birth from a Dragon God, Storm God, etc. Wild Magic can lend to a trickster god and shadow can lend to a fallen aasimar.
    Honorable mention: V. Human. Take ya damn skill, floating stats, and feats.

    • @Aequilix
      @Aequilix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FireDice Yup. Half-Elves are kinda redundant to mention since you can basically play ANYTHING as a Half-elf and it'll be pretty decent. But in particular to like.... Sorcerer's and Bards I'd say, they still get a personal mention from me. Cuz even considering another very popular all-rounder like Variant Human, I'd 100% pick a Half Elf over the human unless i was going for a specific build which relied on needing that level 1 feat.
      Just aside from mechanics, I think they make really good choices flavor-wise as well.

  • @blshouse
    @blshouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Half-elves fit in the Draconic theme as well, especially Silver Draconic bloodline as Silver Dragons are well known for being fond of taking elven form and secretly living in elven communities. The offspring of such a dragon could be an elf or half-elf who heritage is unknown until they start manifesting sorcerers powers.

  • @ailyn2930
    @ailyn2930 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'd say the best option is probably half elf (drow parentage) for a few reasons
    -going by Scag rules, you can sacrifice the skill versatility for the drow's three spells which use charisma, perfect mix with sorcerer spellcasting
    -race feats like elven accuracy and everyone's friend are both available to help with spellcasting and make good roleplaying use of that charisma stat, and most dms will allow for drow high spellcasting which doubles down on the extra charisma spells
    -the two floating stats can boost constitution and dex for surviveability
    -the fact that a half elf's non elven parent can be anything opens up all sorts of versatility for origins and flavor
    -the drow half still lends itself to both shadow and divine sorcery (technically drow use a lot of a warped form of holy magic involving lolth)
    -a few optional narrative hooks with their magic could be either having their magic be something that was exploited by their society and trained to the limit, or something that was seen as wild and chaotic and driven away towards the surface

But for straight Sorcerer, Halfling Wild Magic Sorcerer who uses his luck just to keep out of trouble is fun. Especially in my setting, where magic naturally fluctuates a bit, as is. I've been thinking a lot lately about how to use that idea for a Sorcery character that'd be DM expectable. So you can imagine you really got my attention when you mentioned The Cat Lord as a potential source for sorcerers (or warlock) powers.

    For a Fiendish origin I'd totally go for a pseudo druid take on it with a similar ability to wild shape but it would be Fiend Shape/Form, turning the caster into a demon/devil of a certain CR, gaining their physical and mental attributes along with their innate abilities. Turning into a succubus, Balor or Pit Fiend would be metal as hell.

    For Charisma-based classes, there is the goblinoid known as the Verdan from "Acquisitions Incorporated". First up, these guys have +2 Charisma, +1 Constitution, start off Small, then at Level 5 become Medium (might need new armor), can re-roll 1's and 2's from short rests due to black blood healing, have telepathic abilities, are Persuasive, and have advantage in Wisdom and Charisma saving throws, and they know Common, Goblin, and one other language.
    Actually, with those abilities, that might fit a number of classes.
    Anyways, these guys' lives are all about Change - going from goblin to hobgoblin size at some point for instance - and in the book, boosting stats might mean physical change, like growth spurt for strength, or stylishly large forehead for intelligence. Also, there's those crazy bat-wing-like ears that grow so long, the Verdan have been known to pierce them, and use earrings to hold them together behind their heads, to them from flapping in the wind. Sounds like fun.

      @@Nerdarchy Yep. And the interesting thing is that they all work quite well as a multiclass or dip for the others. For instance, Warlock Tome 5 gives unrestricted access to ritual spellcasting, from every class, up to 3rd level (which is 80% or so of all ritual spells in the books); perfect for a sorcerer multiclass to drastically increase the number of spells you have access to. Warlock also works well for a 1-3 level dip because of the unique spells and eldritch invocations; ever wanted unlimited illusions or mage armor as a bard, perfect darkvision as a sorcerer, or read every language as a paladin? And then there's the dragon sorcerer with natural armor at lvl 1 and 3rd level metamagic, the paladin's second-level divine smite, and the bard's second level jack of all trades and third level expertise. You can also take 5 or 6 levels of sword or valor bard to gain the warrior abilities for your (primarily) hexblade warlock.

    I've always wanted to play a kalashtar shadow sorcerer and maybe mess with some of the spells to be more Old God like. I played with the idea of mixing warlock levels in it and it being this character that comes from a family who carries this seed of an old god until the old god is able to mature and be reborn. So the spells would be a mix of shadow and cold like a being that came from a far off location. It feels like it still needs some touching up because it either ends up a smite machine warlock like most SorLock builds or it ends up being a sorcerer with some Hexblade/Old God Pact abilities.

    Something I've noticed a lot in the comments: People kind of upset there isn't an infernal bloodline for Tieflings. Don't get me wrong, it'd be cool. But Tieflings can be very far and distant from their fiendish lineage. Why they aren't all evil out of the box. And Tieflings make... More Tieflings. They aren't like half human, half devil. They have become their own race. Not half-fiends, humans, etc, etc (Yes, I know that the way they started was humans/fiends but at their current point, Tieflings are super far gone and their own race). So you could totally be any other bloodline as a Tiefling, IMO.

      Nerdarchy It would be a great option don't get me wrong! I think my angle was more so "Don't feel bad about becoming creative for sorcerer origins with Tieflings just cuz a fiend one doesn't exist." That was the vibe I was gettin and don't want people feeling down/limited because of it.
      An actual pure fiend one would be nice though. I get that Wild Sorcerer is supposed to be a weird catch 22 archetype for things like potentially fiends, fey, chaos, etc. But its not as nice as having its own archetype.

      I'd tend to say just either go Wild Magic to represent a higher-than-normal innate magic for a Tiefling or go Warlock instead (with the Pact being passed down through many generations).
      As a general rule, I'd change the lore of a class or race before resorting to messing with the actual mechanics.

    My favorite is a Hill Dwarf Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer. Yeah, I had to put a high stat in CHA since it wasn't boosted, but I have 52 hp at level 4 (OK, I did take the Tough feat at level 4). We roll stats and I was lucky enough to get an 18 which I put in CHA. I had a 16 that I put in CON (boosted to 18 by race). The rest are just ok. I wear no armor and have the 13+DEX from the Draconic Bloodline and wield an axe.

    Normally my choice would always be warforged, but I feel like you have to be born as a sorcerer or at least have blood with dormant magic in it and the warforged has none of that. They're not born and they have no blood to form a blood line. So, my top two choices for sorcerer would be yuan-ti and triton in that order. Unless we're doing something special and then obviously the vampire is the best sorcerer. Obviously you can't start off as a vampire though (unless you've homebrewed it as a race)

I've been planning a oneshot using the sidekick UA and one of the players wanted to play a genie since the sidekicks do allow new creatures, so I powered down a djinni for his racial base and gave him some abilities. All this talk about what established (official published) races would be best for a specific class has me wondering, what about fan-made races. There are quite a few on D&D Beyond now. With that said, if the Nerdarchy team were going to create whole new races and/or subraces for D&D what would they be and what would the idea behind them be? Same goes for classes and subclasses. As for races, I would love to see an official Half-Fey with more than a few subraces to it. As for classes and subclasses, I've been trying to write up a Chi Wizard (Wizard with Monk elements and spells built around the principles of chi/ki) but just kept running into barriers I don't think I can assail on my own. I'm also working to adjust my Henchman class for 5e, and that's pretty difficult in its own right.

    • @oOPPHOo
      @oOPPHOo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just have to change the core flavor a tiny bit. Instead of tracing your divine magic back through your bloodline to a celestial origin, you are instead more blessed with this magic to be The Chosen One or an experiment by the gods to see if a "devilspawn" can be raised to goodness in this matter. Could make for an interesting conflict where the PC might want to be good, but doesn't appreciate being a pawn in these types of games.
      I once created a tiefling paladin of devotion for a mini-campaign. He was raised by a human master, but that master tried to convince him he was in fact not the son of tieflings, but instead of aasimar parents cursed by a night hag to conceive only fiendish offspring. I even used the Zariel Tiefling to reflect this celestial connection as my character ventures on his quest to lift the curse.
      Whether the story is true or not I leave up to the DM, but something like that could happen in my campaign where such a curse is a central storyline to the fate of an entire duchy in my setting. Zariel Tiefling with the divine soul is also a great way to convey the idea of a half-tiefling with aasimar or otherwise celestial ancestry.

So I don't get why they are trying to change that history with a different thing altogether. To me, the shades and the Shadar kai should both exist cause they are not the same.
