I am older and have been watching your TH-cam channel for a long time. You are one of the kindest, sweetest and most generous people! Do not let the haters change who you are, your life is not the golden spoon one, but instead you have lived a life of hard work and dedication. The effort you put into giving your horses, donkeys and all the critters the best life ever shows clearly. I often share your channel will young and older people, because you work so hard to keep everything so clean, organized and beautiful. I have never seen any young person with as much drive as you have in so many aspects of their lives. ESME, you are a STAR!!! So sorry that people have tried to hurt you emotionally. I take my hat off to you Esme, for having the courage to share your equestrian life; I think you are amazing. I feel like giving up horses every other day because of my 'critics' , but I have lovely horses, and some very supportive friends and instructors that help me keep going. I think we just have to focus on our horses, remember why we are doing this and have confidence in our own abilities (or ask for help from the right people when we don't). Shutting out the noise from trolls and barn witches is easier said than done, but not worth giving up on our dreams.

My dad taught me as a kid the phrase.. "the more you learn about horses the more you realize you have to learn ". I found that to be true about horses and life. Also, it somewhat depends on your instructor and their riding/teaching style on how improvement comes. You explained it so well. In all walks of life there are people who are just gonna be mean like that. Unfortunately.

March 2020 first week into lockdown I d begged and begged my mum for a lesson. My horse is from world horse welfare it’s a amazing charity and I’m blessed to have her, you give so much to us and your horses it’s your passion and your calling. I have lost my confidence a few times and am currently struggling with trying to get it back , it takes time and people need positive people like you to listen encouragement and understanding, I’m hoping it will come back in time but keep doing what you love your amazing. Hey Esme! It's so true that the things people say over the internet, they would never say to your face. I honestly feel like I don't want to be around other horse people sometimes because of the constant, constant hate and correction and mistreatment of other horse people and horses, so too hear you speak out about it was so awesome!!! The horse world is so dark. I just found your channel and you're like a ray of sunshine! 😄 I also say all the time that "you can't judge someone for not knowing something they just don't know", which is something I have to remind myself to when I see people "not doing something right", I just have to remember that they simply don't know what they don't know, and try to find a positive way to tell them! As someone who was suicidal this year over this topic- I really think it’s amazing that you’ve brought it up and I think it should be spoken about more. It’s sad that so many people who don’t know you or the truth about you are so opinionated and obsessed with your life - I think it’s strange behaviour! What happened to me is under serious police investigation, so I think people need to also remember that just because they’re behind a screen, it’s still a crime. I always remember, no one who is more successful/ happy will never ever speak down to you. Positive vibes only! ❤

Back in 2019 I searched on TH-cam" How to tack up a horse" because I stopped for a few years and wanted to get back into it .Your video popped up and I've been watching ever since. You take excellent care of all you animals and your passion is obvious . You are not only a good rider,but a good person.I am so sorry you had to experience such atrocities.You derserved better. I'm a mom of 4 and my younger 3 love your channel (biggest is a non horsey teenage boy!!). You are such a hard worker and even being not quite 20 years older than you, I'm very inspired by your ethic and how you used your creativity to fund your horse passion. Its motivated me to find a way for horses to work in our life style in Israel and I love the example of resourcefulness that you give my children. I was about to get started in lessons again after 15 years of not riding, since I moved here. Then a war broke out! It will happen soon though! Anyway, the love for you outweighs the meanies. This is a very late comment on this podcast but I wanted to tell you that as a dancer (ballet) and fan of elite gymnastics it is also extremely common on social media to give petty uncalled for critiques in other sports like those. I think a lot of the time it comes from people who were taught that way when they were beginners-through shame (and particularly public shame, in front of class/team mates) and when they see someone post themselves making the same mistakes they have such intense memories of being corrected on, it almost feels like a reflex to them to pass that shame on to the next person. Since I teach ballet too now, I make such a point to give my students corrections in ways that push them to be better without shame or fear involved. It’s a wonderful testament to your training and values that you can’t imagine being in such a nasty headspace to comment negatively on a stranger’s post. 🩵

if someone tries to disturb a channel's success or other people's enjoyment of a video by commenting hateful stuff, it says more about them than it does about you. these people are often hollow inside and have serious issues with feelings of worthlessness. the only option they see is harshly criticizing or even trying to take down others in the hopes of looking more worthy in front of themselves. The best remedy is to see them as what they are: narcissists who are handled best by keeping your distance and totally ignoring what they have to say. I recently discovered Jay Reid's channel, which might be of help for anyone having to deal with people like this in their life.
Thank you for bringing this up Esme and I am so sorry for what you went through. Online hate is hard to deal with and personally I choose to see it as coming from pain. No person that is truly happy, grateful and secure in themselves would leave hateful comments like the ones you describe. I fully support your strategy of blocking them because no one wins if we give that narrative more space and you should certainly not spend your energy on it! I have had multiple moments where I nearly quit, and in the last two/three years I have taken a major step back from social media as I just don’t have the energy to deal with it anymore. Although now I only occasionally get odd hate comment and it doesn’t bother me - it definitely bothered 15 year old me, who was new to horses and just starting to enjoy and learn a new sport. Realistically no matter how you ride or react to a situation someone will always say something negative - sadly some people just go through life viewing the world in a negative light. I love that you have spoken up on this, because I do think the equestrian community is awful for putting others down, when really we all just want to enjoy our ponies and have fun🤍

Being a rider myself, it's clear to me that you are a completely competent rider and a nice person. Im sorry that you've had to go through this. Very inspirational Esme - I appreciated your thoughts around why people improve at different rates. After riding all my life, I was then really poorly, in hospital and couldn't ride for nearly 2 years. I was certainly very rusty when getting back on my horse. I struggled to ride him in the school, just couldn't get him bending even though he is very well schooled. I wouldn't be brave enough to do your job, putting everything out there. You are a lovely rider, look after your horses beautifully and are amazing at your job 😍

I've been around horses for close to 20 years now, and started watching you during the first lockdown when I was missing horses (local stables had to close), you inspired me (and I'm sure so many more) to make the steps to get back into it in full swing, and I've had my own pony now for 3 years. Your amazing nature, grace, confidence and ability to show exactly what it means to be a normal horsey person is what made me realise I could also do it, just like you do. You're an absolute inspiration, and I'm so so sorry you had to deal with far-too-real threats and nastiness. You ARE doing the best for your horses, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that, just someone with a bit of understanding and empathy for others. This Esme, if you quit I probably wouldn’t have gotten back on at my first fall last week, even if it was in canter, and my legs were in pain, I remembered all equestrians went through it, and I didn’t want to be THAT person who just gave up right away, so I got on after I wasn’t as shaken up and continued on, although I’ve been simply just trotting from now on, but next week I should (hopefully) canter again on one of the lazier horses like Rocky or Scooby at my barn! Thank you for staying with us all this time, and if you ever feel the need to take a break, take that break! You deserve a break after how much work you’ve put into this channel. ❤

I'm so sorry you had these experiences Esme. I love that you share all the good and bad of just being a plain old normal equestrian. I too love watching the top riders but thats not what I will ever be (as a horsey girl who stopped at 14 and then didn't get back in the saddle until I was 30). I still find the equestrian world cliquey etc but being older mean I just tune it out. Social media is such a double edged sword and I agree people use it as an excuse to throw all good manners and social convention out the window because no one is actually responsible for anything! Keep doing your thing!

I feel this. I had tiktok. I commented on something not fully watching the video ( it was not a rude comment at all ) someone made a video out of this slandering me and it got THOUSANDS of hate comments from something I commented not fully informed. I deactivated my tiktok that day and I haven’t looked back. Disappointing but people know by hating on others they can get huge amounts of likes, follows and views. Not a world I want to be apart of. I think although hate is evident in the horse world, I think it’s just evident everywhere in many aspects of the world nowadays. ❤❤
Well said, I can't even begin to imagine some of the comments that you must receive. I'm an adult rider and although I've ridden for a long time I'm not very confident and just lately the bitchiness in the equestrian world has really become apparent to me. I listen to what people say about other people and can't help but imagine what those same people say about me behind my back as well, to the point where I wonder if it's worth it. Well done for putting this out there and I hope in the future the equestrian world becomes kinder and more welcoming to everyone.
Yeah I was bullied by my classmates for 2 years and it didn't affect me then i was still a positive young girl but now it affects me alot, like alot alot and its been like 3 years. I just think people need to be more positive and friendly and welcoming because no one likes being put down so why do it to others? I remember the video where mickey got very lame and it was so sad as you could really see how much you care about him, and you care the exact same about all of your equines as then joey had his injury quite recently and you visited him every day twice a day which takes up alot of your day, you really can see how much you love them! I’m an older American horse owner who adores your lovely, honest, joyful take on horsemanship & your life in general. Keep you head above cutting, evil comments. The people dishing them out must be empty of joy in their own life.
Oh, & my first pony was a hackney that came with a cart/harness. He was a hot rod who I don’t think was morning the fact that an adoring, (determined😅) girl chose to ride him more then drive him.
My best horse mentor/instructor I have ever had has always told me that no matter how many years of experience we gain, we will never stop learning and improving. I've been around horses for 22 years and I can confirm this to be absolutely true! Its sad how just disgusting the competitions has become when people (especially parents and horse families for generations) are just out ruining the joy of the sport. Its hard to find good attitudes these days that encourage more people to ride and have more shows and charity events. Ive had a student who I gave beginning and intermediate riding lessons to for eight years, shes a wonderful girl with a kind personality and has a natural talent with all animals. When she moved with her family, she went to a new school to continue riding and her new instructor she was stuck with had a very nasty and negative attitude who did nothing but insult and demean her students. My student was roasted every week and grew very discouraged, she became negative herself and began believing the horrible comments her instructor gave her. When I met up with her recently, she was began attacking my character and riding/training techniques. I stayed calm and gently asked her why she would say something like that and she said her new instructor said that she didnt learn anything valuable from me and said I was a terrible rider too. Curious, I asked her who her instructor was and when she last saw me ride at a show? (I havent been riding in shows at the time because I was busy with college so I had taken up teaching on the side for a while with my three family horses and pony) She admitted that her new instructor had never said how she knew I was a bad rider and just assumed that because my student didnt meet her standards that meant I was bad? I asked for the instructors name, then called two of my mentors, both are very involved in the west coast conferences and youth club competitions. Turns out, that instructor lost her twaching license years ago due to abuse of animals and children! She had moved and kept quiet for a while so no one knew she was twcahing again. I told my mentors and then called my student's parents to explain what was going on and recommended a new stable. They didn't believe me at first, because they are not involved in the sport, and wanted her to take cheaper lessons to save money. I recommended a community college who would take her for free, she was a teenager at the time, and only pay a small fee for insurance and leasing a new horse since she didn't own one. I knew the instructor there from my drill team days and the group was more chill to work with. She transferred and later apologized, not realizing how she could get sucked in so quickly with the negativity. Its hard not to feel pressured in any sport, but if we dont keep our heads someone could get hurt in many ways. Please dont let the negativity get to you Esme, you are a wonderful representative for our beloved sport and you are Greatly Appreciated 👍 Stay awesome and stay positive ❤

I think - whenever you have created a success story - there will always be miserable people trying to tear you down. Part of success is not just getting there, but staying successful. I don’t think anyone can ever predict the way others will react to our good fortune and personal achievements. The thing that seems most important is to surround yourself with people who will protect you and support you. It looks like you really have that!
I definitely had a moment where I nearly quit, and moments after that where I’m like “maybe I’ll just enjoy my horse in private” … but then I get DMs from people saying how much the content has helped and I love my community and what I create. I feel like giving up horses every other day because of my 'critics' , but I have lovely horses, and some very supportive friends and instructors that help me keep going. I think we just have to focus on our horses, remember why we are doing this and have confidence in our own abilities (or ask for help from the right people when we don't). Shutting out the noise from trolls and barn witches is easier said than done, but not worth giving up on our dreams.

My dad taught me as a kid the phrase.. "the more you learn about horses the more you realize you have to learn ". I found that to be true about horses and life. Also, it somewhat depends on your instructor and their riding/teaching style on how improvement comes. You explained it so well.

As someone who was suicidal this year over this topic- I really think it’s amazing that you’ve brought it up and I think it should be spoken about more. It’s sad that so many people who don’t know you or the truth about you are so opinionated and obsessed with your life - I think it’s strange behaviour! What happened to me is under serious police investigation, so I think people need to also remember that just because they’re behind a screen, it’s still a crime. This is a very late comment on this podcast but I wanted to tell you that as a dancer (ballet) and fan of elite gymnastics it is also extremely common on social media to give petty uncalled for critiques in other sports like those. I think a lot of the time it comes from people who were taught that way when they were beginners-through shame (and particularly public shame, in front of class/team mates) and when they see someone post themselves making the same mistakes they have such intense memories of being corrected on, it almost feels like a reflex to them to pass that shame on to the next person. Since I teach ballet too now, I make such a point to give my students corrections in ways that push them to be better without shame or fear involved. It’s a wonderful testament to your training and values that you can’t imagine being in such a nasty headspace to comment negatively on a stranger’s post. 🩵

if someone tries to disturb a channel's success or other people's enjoyment of a video by commenting hateful stuff, it says more about them than it does about you. these people are often hollow inside and have serious issues with feelings of worthlessness. the only option they see is harshly criticizing or even trying to take down others in the hopes of looking more worthy in front of themselves. The best remedy is to see them as what they are: narcissists who are handled best by keeping your distance and totally ignoring what they have to say. I recently discovered Jay Reid's channel, which might be of help for anyone having to deal with people like this in their life.
Thank you for bringing this up Esme and I am so sorry for what you went through. Online hate is hard to deal with and personally I choose to see it as coming from pain. No person that is truly happy, grateful and secure in themselves would leave hateful comments like the ones you describe. I fully support your strategy of blocking them because no one wins if we give that narrative more space and you should certainly not spend your energy on it! I have had multiple moments where I nearly quit, and in the last two/three years I have taken a major step back from social media as I just don’t have the energy to deal with it anymore. Although now I only occasionally get odd hate comment and it doesn’t bother me - it definitely bothered 15 year old me, who was new to horses and just starting to enjoy and learn a new sport.
Realistically no matter how you ride or react to a situation someone will always say something negative - sadly some people just go through life viewing the world in a negative light.
I love that you have spoken up on this, because I do think the equestrian community is awful for putting others down, when really we all just want to enjoy our ponies and have fun🤍

Very inspirational Esme - I appreciated your thoughts around why people improve at different rates. After riding all my life, I was then really poorly, in hospital and couldn't ride for nearly 2 years. I was certainly very rusty when getting back on my horse. I struggled to ride him in the school, just couldn't get him bending even though he is very well schooled. I wouldn't be brave enough to do your job, putting everything out there. You are a lovely rider, look after your horses beautifully and are amazing at your job 😍

This Esme, if you quit I probably wouldn’t have gotten back on at my first fall last week, even if it was in canter, and my legs were in pain, I remembered all equestrians went through it, and I didn’t want to be THAT person who just gave up right away, so I got on after I wasn’t as shaken up and continued on, although I’ve been simply just trotting from now on, but next week I should (hopefully) canter again on one of the lazier horses like Rocky or Scooby at my barn! I'm so sorry you had these experiences Esme. I love that you share all the good and bad of just being a plain old normal equestrian. I too love watching the top riders but thats not what I will ever be (as a horsey girl who stopped at 14 and then didn't get back in the saddle until I was 30).
I still find the equestrian world cliquey etc but being older mean I just tune it out.
Social media is such a double edged sword and I agree people use it as an excuse to throw all good manners and social convention out the window because no one is actually responsible for anything!

I feel this. I had tiktok. I commented on something not fully watching the video ( it was not a rude comment at all ) someone made a video out of this slandering me and it got THOUSANDS of hate comments from something I commented not fully informed. I deactivated my tiktok that day and I haven’t looked back. Disappointing but people know by hating on others they can get huge amounts of likes, follows and views. Not a world I want to be apart of. Well said, I can't even begin to imagine some of the comments that you must receive. I'm an adult rider and although I've ridden for a long time I'm not very confident and just lately the bitchiness in the equestrian world has really become apparent to me. I listen to what people say about other people and can't help but imagine what those same people say about me behind my back as well, to the point where I wonder if it's worth it. Well done for putting this out there and I hope in the future the equestrian world becomes kinder and more welcoming to everyone.
Yeah I was bullied by my classmates for 2 years and it didn't affect me then i was still a positive young girl but now it affects me alot, like alot alot and its been like 3 years. Seeing you cry is the worst!, you dont deserve a single hate comment, you're the sweetest person, and you treat your horses like kings! I remember the video where mickey got very lame and it was so sad as you could really see how much you care about him, and you care the exact same about all of your equines as then joey had his injury quite recently and you visited him every day twice a day which takes up alot of your day, you really can see how much you love them! Never listen to anyones hate esme, you're doing so much better than the people who hate because i guarantee they were just jelous! Well done for pushing through them❤

I always appreciate good constructive criticism, but what really gets me is when the hate comes from people that don’t know what they are talking about. Also, I wanted to add that I look up to you and you motivate me to be a better and fitter version of myself.

I’m an older American horse owner who adores your lovely, honest, joyful take on horsemanship & your life in general. Keep you head above cutting, evil comments. The people dishing them out must be empty of joy in their own life.
Oh, & my first pony was a hackney that came with a cart/harness. He was a hot rod who I don’t think was morning the fact that an adoring, (determined😅) girl chose to ride him more then drive him.

My best horse mentor/instructor I have ever had has always told me that no matter how many years of experience we gain, we will never stop learning and improving. I've been around horses for 22 years and I can confirm this to be absolutely true!
Its sad how just disgusting the competitions has become when people (especially parents and horse families for generations) are just out ruining the joy of the sport. Its hard to find good attitudes these days that encourage more people to ride and have more shows and charity events.
Ive had a student who I gave beginning and intermediate riding lessons to for eight years, shes a wonderful girl with a kind personality and has a natural talent with all animals.
When she moved with her family, she went to a new school to continue riding and her new instructor she was stuck with had a very nasty and negative attitude who did nothing but insult and demean her students. My student was roasted every week and grew very discouraged, she became negative herself and began believing the horrible comments her instructor gave her.
When I met up with her recently, she was began attacking my character and riding/training techniques. I stayed calm and gently asked her why she would say something like that and she said her new instructor said that she didnt learn anything valuable from me and said I was a terrible rider too.
Curious, I asked her who her instructor was and when she last saw me ride at a show? (I havent been riding in shows at the time because I was busy with college so I had taken up teaching on the side for a while with my three family horses and pony)
She admitted that her new instructor had never said how she knew I was a bad rider and just assumed that because my student didnt meet her standards that meant I was bad?
I asked for the instructors name, then called two of my mentors, both are very involved in the west coast conferences and youth club competitions.
Turns out, that instructor lost her twaching license years ago due to abuse of animals and children! She had moved and kept quiet for a while so no one knew she was twcahing again.
I told my mentors and then called my student's parents to explain what was going on and recommended a new stable. They didn't believe me at first, because they are not involved in the sport, and wanted her to take cheaper lessons to save money.
I recommended a community college who would take her for free, she was a teenager at the time, and only pay a small fee for insurance and leasing a new horse since she didn't own one. I knew the instructor there from my drill team days and the group was more chill to work with.
She transferred and later apologized, not realizing how she could get sucked in so quickly with the negativity.
Its hard not to feel pressured in any sport, but if we dont keep our heads someone could get hurt in many ways.
Please dont let the negativity get to you Esme, you are a wonderful representative for our beloved sport and you are Greatly Appreciated 👍

Keep doing what your doing. Many of us love you to bits and only those who hate are wasting their breathe probably because of jealousy or are just pure horrible people.

I think - whenever you have created a success story - there will always be miserable people trying to tear you down. Part of success is not just getting there, but staying successful. I don’t think anyone can ever predict the way others will react to our good fortune and personal achievements. The thing that seems most important is to surround yourself with people who will protect you and support you. It looks like you really have that!
