a wolf at the door has to be my favorite radiohead song.
the context of the concept matched with the political climate in which it was written, and compared to the political climate now, is just so outstanding.
for those who don’t know, this song has a duel narrative, discussing the terror of the police and capitalism. the main character of the track is a mentally ill man (most likely a man of color from the way he delivers “out pops the cracker”, which i just fucking love) who is undergoing a mental health crisis. but instead of receiving help, he’s wrongly imprisoned by the police. and listening to this after the case of jordan neely really hits, man. “let me back, let me back, i promise to be good… help me, call a doctor, put me inside, put me inside, put me inside.” eventually the man is allowed to return to his children but is always living in fear of “the wolf” taking them away.
the wolf symbolizes the ever-present threat of the government, specifically the police. “and i’ll never see the, again if i squeal to the cops” is directly saying that this man can’t receive help from the law, because they’ll just lock him up again (also interesting use of the word “squeal”, which is something pigs usually do). but the wolf also represents the man’s looming mental illness, becoming “a monster” he can’t control, having to keep him at the door.
the second verse is much more aggressive and fast-paced, illustrating the fears and rage of not just the character, but thom as well. it describes the privilege of the ruling class, controlling the masses, feeling like a cog in the machine, and being helpless to do anything about it. “city boys in first class don’t know we’re born, they don’t. someone’s always gotta come and clean it up, born and raised for the job, someone always does” (the last line always feels incredibly powerful, as thom’s vocal is almost indistinguishable from the word “does” and “dies”, which perfectly fits either way you tell the story.
the final chorus is much more somber in contrast, showing the character’s loss of control and debt to serve the wolf in order to have the money to protect his children. the final line, “so i’m just gonna…” followed by thom’s gorgeous falsetto is structured to sound similar to a wolf’s howl, and it’s left up to interpretation what this means for the character. it can be seen as him submitting the the whims of the wolf, becoming apart of the machine that incarcerated him in the first place, all to ensure he doesn’t lose his children. or, sadly, it could also be read as him being taken by his internal wolf, and unable to handle the stress and fear, his mind breaks. this is assumed to mean he has another mental breakdown, possibly arrested again, or more likely, he is killed by the police. “someone always dies.”
as thom said, “it’s supposed to be a fucked-up modern fairytale.” crazy to think that 20 years later, this song still holds as much weight, if not more, than when it was first written.

@@ChuckWasHere, I’m in the same boat. I have it ranked as the 7th best Radiohead album, out of 9. Only slightly ahead of Moon Shaped Pool, and slight BEHIND Pablo Honey (yep, behind Pablo Honey). I disagree with the OP that the album is ‘underrated’--it reached #1 in the UK and #3 in the US (By comparison, The Bends only made it to #88 in the US and OK Computer to #21). I’d argue that, relative to Radiohead its actually a bit OVERRATED. That said, I still will listen to it occasionally as a mediocre Radiohead album is generally still better than most stuff out there……

I think it’s important to know that during the writing and recording of this album, Radiohead were mentally at their best collectively as a band. So when it came time for the track listing/cutting tracks, they didn’t want to ruin a positive experience with the disagreements that come with this process. Thom and Ed said in an interview that they regret not thoroughly finalising it.

I feel like the whole theme of this album is that it’s all over the place, the songs don’t seem to be in any order that flows and some of the songs have drastic changes mid way. Also as you said, the 13th track is called scatterbrain and I feel like that reflects the album and it’s cover, with all the words strewn about everywhere. And I might just be spewing nonsense but the idea of hailing a thief suggests the government is in anarchy. Idk just some random late night thoughts lol

      12. A Punch up at the wedding
      13. A Wolf at the Door
      14. Sail to the Moon
With this reorder it tells a narrative of a naive protagonist getting taken in, brainwashed, and becoming obedient.
1-5 has a more peaceful alt rock sound with a looming sense of danger. The narratives all have sense of building tension
6-9 all have a more experimental sound, it is the brainwash segment of the album
10-13 is the overpowerment of the government + havoc, war, kidnapping, etc. The sound here is more varied
And lastly sail to the moon is just a sad reflective ballad to say the earth is messed up and is ruined, it’s time to escape somewhere new
