      *Video topic suggestion* Hi Thomas! I have fat malabsorbtion and I've tried almost everything under the sun to alleviate the symptoms But nothing seems to work. I was doing keto for about 1,5y and really loved it (alot of fasting made it doable..) since then I've tried to cycle keto But I just can't stand being bloated with aches and pain. Would you consider to make a video of how to manage the keto diet with impaired fat absorbtion? Thanks for the great content. Sincerely

    A tip on a totally different topic. Lots of people use canned beans but they have trouble digesting them because of the lectins in the beans. Soaking them overnight is a great way to reduce lectins (these cause bloating and gas) but pressure cooking them after soaking also reduces a lot of the lectins. If you don't want to do that the only brand of canned beans that are presoaked and pressure cooked before canning are Eden beans.

    I stopped drinking coffee for breakfast after my fast to switch to ceremonial matcha. I just wanted to reduce insulin and prevent it from a spike after a long fast. Have been doing matcha for 2 decades, daily. May be that's the reason my weight staying consistently stable over the years, no matter what are my diets. I believe there are a lot of things we can do to activate autophagy if we combine what we eat, daily activities and some good proper techniques like fasting and fitness goals. There is always a combination of many things to get results. I experienced different ways to bring down my blglucose (was prediabetes, insulin resistant for 20 years without knowing). I finally found that fasting alone, or only exercising even tremendously, or just following a strict diet won't really work. Many other people shared the same frustration when they could not get good results by doing specifically certain things to resolve their problem. Drinking matcha daily helps me to stay well the past many many years. Adding turmeric, cinnamon, cardamon and other healthy herbs didn't save me from insulin resistant. Exercise on machine and daily long hours walk didn't bring my blood glucose to normal. I finally realized all of this have to combine together with consistency, daily and the most important are to educate and discipline yourself on a long journey.
    Simple but requires patience, knowledge and discipline.

    I love that this discusses the similarity between exercise and fasting regarding AMPK activation.
    Having learned so much about my body through fasting, when it comes to exercise and glycogen depletion (among other energy draining processes), I've come to understand how it *FEELS* to be low on energy reserves.
    Before fasting, I had little to no idea what the causes of tingling sensations or cramps or foggy brain or any other symptoms of energy systems imbalance (be it low ATP, low glycogen in the arms or legs, out-of-balance electrolytes, etc.).
    Fasting trains you how to know the difference. You learn about your body and brain's needs for electrolyte balance - from fatigue and foggy brain all the way to heartbeat irregularities. You learn how it feels to be TRULY hungry and TRULY depleted of glycogen (like near end-of-marathon runner extremes depending on how hard you exercise and how deeply into a long-term fast you do so). You learn about nutrient timing and insulin system manipulation/control...
    And possibly most important of all... you learn about gut microbiome health and how that relates to things like immune system health, chronic diseases, and mental health as well.
    It really is a miracle... fasting. I can't think of another way to describe it.

      Yes, I feel woozy and tingly on a water fast at day 2 and increase electrolytes because that uh-oh feeling tells me my electrolytes are off. But then the mean ghrelin aka gremlin starts up and I have to keep busy.
      I am not really a fan of the dizzy woozy feeling though. Having been keto a while I thought it would not be as bad. I keep waiting for that great, energetic, brain energy feeling to kick in. Not here yet. 🤔

    • @oohwha
      @oohwha ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@catcan221 Personally I stopped noticing hunger and stopped having cravings around day 3 at about 60 hours after eating my last calorie on day zero.
      Of course, the hunger was still there around breakfast, lunch, and dinner times... but it was far less noticeable and using a "caffeine hack" would essentially negate it all together, rather than just dulling it till it passed.
      I haven't done a long-term (more than 48 hours) fast in I think over 2 years though, haven't really felt the need to and don't want to strip down my body again... but the long ones I did (a 7-day, 4 separate 5-day fasts across a 3 year span) were very, VERY helpful with recomposition of my body and repairing and resetting my gut microbiome! ❤❤

    • @catcan221
      @catcan221 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@oohwha I did 72 hours for the first time. I am only about 15 pounds off my target weight so this is partly to break the plateau and also for autophagy as I am in my 50s and really want to clean up senescent cells. My mom was just diagnosed with cancer and it makes me realize that even when we think we are doing all the healthy things, we can still have bad cells lurking in us.
      I never felt the "amazing energy and clarity" some say they get. I also felt ebb and flow of the hunger pangs. Having been ketovore 5 months and doing TRE, I felt I should be able to try a longer fast.
      Now refeeding slowly. Started with a cup of bone broth. Two hours later a single egg. Then three hours later some oven cooked wild caught salmon. I was not sure I wanted beef the first day back. Hoping that doing a 3 day every couple months will be good for both weight loss and autophagy. 👍🏻

    • @oohwha
      @oohwha ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@catcan221 sounds like you've got a solid plan!
      Like you, I wanted the autophagy boost as well. For the first 3 days of fasting, your metabolism boosts a bit before things "slow down" as you become fueled almost exclusively by ketones... although, in your case, you are *ALREADY* fueled mostly by ketones already :)
      Sounds like you have an excellent refeeding strategy as well. Doing a 3-day fast every couple of months would definitely be a great way to keep will power and discipline well-trained while also helping you ramp up AMPK and increase fatty acid mobilization even MORE than with Keto alone.
      If I were still trying to lose a large amount of weight, I would likely still be doing longer term fasting as well (my first 5-day fast I worked out every day and dropped 20 pounds from 201 to 181 so when I started refeeding I only gained back 10 pounds and kept the 190 weight).
      Good luck with your goals, your plan is solid and the results will definitely come. I personally found I had to start tracking my calories in and calories burned every day to really zero in on that last bit of weight management (I fluctuate between 185 and 195 right now, for the past 2 years). I can really focus my calories toward healthy fats and toward micronutrients (mostly from seeds and nuts that are high in calories) so that I *FEEL* like a million bucks every day. When I blindly ate and worked out, I was off my game some days with no energy... likely due to not enough magnesium or maybe vitamin D... but tracking calories allows me to go all in on things like eggs, salmon, sardines, olive oil, macadamia nuts, sprouted pumpkin seeds, and complex carbs I need after a day doing deadlifts or squats at the gym.
      Calorie counting is easy enough with apps like the Fitbit premium plan includes... just scan the bar code and put in the amount you ate. A kitchen scale that measures by the gram is a game-changer as well. Probably the best $10 I ever spent on my health in my life! 😂😂💪💪

  • @batlin
    @batlin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Very interesting points. I felt like the domino analogy was a bit confusing as it seemed to imply that ingesting a single calorie would completely reset the "momentum" of autophagy to zero, the same as if you ate a three-course meal. This would then contradict the point about gluconeogenesis later, which doesn't reset AMPK and autophagy to zero but stabilises AMPK (at a much higher level than it would be when in a fed state, presumably).
    So I'd still like to know: 1) What's the minimum food intake that sets us to a "fed" state and resets autophagy to baseline levels? 2) If we eat less than that (e.g. tea with milk, or even a single grain of rice?), how much is autophagy reduced, and how long before it regains the momentum it previously had? 3) How long before you "max out" and AMPK levels stabilise? I'd read a paper before suggesting that autophagy rate continues to rise for maybe 5 or 6 days before stabilising, perhaps even implying that autophagy from a one- or even two-day fast is almost negligible. What's the actual situation?

    • @alan2102X
      @alan2102X 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Very good questions. IDK if anyone has answers.
      "it seemed to imply that ingesting a single calorie would completely reset the "momentum" of autophagy to zero" -- I find this quite implausible. A SINGLE calorie? No. Fifty calories maybe.
      There's nothing magical about an ingested calorie versus a calorie from something endogenous. The body is constantly turning over materials (proteins, lipids, etc.), recycling them in part, converting to glucose or ketones and burning them for energy, and so on, and that holds true during a fast no less than at other times (and perhaps *more* than at other times). IOW, there are ALWAYS calories floating around.
      Is an exogenous molecule somehow labeled "EXOGENOUS MOLECULE! TREAT THIS DIFFERENTLY!", versus an unlabeled endogenous molecule? No, of course not.
      I get than any significant quantity of, say, exogenous carbohydrate could interrupt autophagy, at least for a time. Perhaps 10 grams would do it, although not for long. How long does it take to burn 40 calories worth of carb when you are fasting? An hour? How long could autophagy possibly be inhibited? Two hours, maybe?
      IDK, I am just thinking aloud, and reasoning as best I can.

    I started water fasting years ago as fasting always gave me emotional and mental strength and helped to ground me. I eventually got out of fasting and now 10-15 years later I am water fasting again. This time I’m learning what is going on within the body as I fast. I’m learning that many people water fast but include tea and coffee, cream etc while fasting. I thought then you’re not in a true absolute fast (I wasn’t referring to autophagy as for me personally fasting was for “greater” purposes. Well now I’m learning about this amazing word and my body how it all works so Im so on board with fasting for several reasons including autophagy ☺️

    The only downside to fasting in my opinion is increased sensitivity to simple sugar

    • @tomunderwood4283

      When fasting, one’s body is saving the glucose for the brain. The sugar sensitivity reduces after a couple days on carbs after a fast.

    There seems to be a controversy regarding autophagy as it takes 4 days on average to deplete liver of fuel. Why would autophagy begin before this depletion occurs.

  • @smoore8
    @smoore8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The calories thing is overblown and made confusing by influencers so they can get you to click on every video they create and keep you confused. A few calories for instance from something like a magnesium supplement or pomegranate extract in a pill supplement won’t stop autophagy just like coffee, which has 5-10 calories per serving won’t. Food will, like actual food and gum with sugars in it, otherwise no. Enough hand wringing

    I started fasting in 2021 and everything went away. My fasting ranges from 18:6 fasting to I meal a day (OMAD).
    The problem is that I am now having problems of indigestion and constipation again and weight loss has stagnated
