    Reached 5 weeks and started with this plan. At 5-1/2 weeks met with Orthopedic doctor. X-rays showed significant healing. I showed him what we were doing and he stated okay but do not push it or allow your minor displaced proximal humerus to go beyond pain thresholds...the bone is only partially healed. I have just moved to 5-6 weeks workout and am getting stronger although my arm is still relying on tendons rather than muscle. I start physical therapy at week 7 and thanks to Adam Fields I am going to blow the therapists away. I am 71 and am going to have full range of motion and my weight lifting strength thanks to this gentleman who I will never forget.

      I wish i had discovered this sooner as its been 9 weeks since my injury yet i can only do parts of weeks 5-6 and 6-7. But better late than never! One issue i am having is my bicep tendon keeps snapping and sending shooting pain whenever i do the pizza circles and try and move my arm either to the front or side (when arm is straight). Im afraid this will lead to frozen shoulder if i have to wait for it to heal. Anyone else with a proximal bicep tendon issue?

      69 M - same here. Right on 5 weeks for me - I am a bit ahead of the video. (e.g. I cut out all pain killers in week 1, and started tying my shoe laces in week 3.) Physio has given me several exercises similar to these, but I like to follow the video, which is very practical.
      One thing I don't think he has mentioned, but which I think has really helped me, is to get some sunshine on the affected arm for 20 mins or so each morning. (Before 10am, to avoid getting too much UV. The little bit you get in morning or late afternoon is enough to help Vitamin D production.) This time outdoors lifts my spirits, but it seems to clear up the bruising very quickly. (Disappeared a week ago.) Quite possibly, the near infra-red light from the sun also helps in the healing of the muscles.

      @@irontarat631 Yes, I had this issue for about two weeks (weeks 3 & 4 mainly). I hated that "snap"! Two things seemed to help: about 20 mins of sunshine on the arm each morning, and a gentle massage using my good arm. I am in week 5 now and it has stopped. This is probably too late to help you, but might help someone else who reads this! 💪

      It's hard to know when to push thru and when to stop. I'm 74 and loving helping myself but the actual shoulder joint will not allow much movement. I'm persevering, starting with a physio next week so hope it eases with time. I want to drive, to swim again. Ill get there. Good luck. 🙏🙏🙏

      @@deeagirdici-maher2483 Good luck to you, also. I would say: let pain be your guide. If you feel pain, that is your limit for now. Try to stop just before the pain. I am sure the physio will give you good advice! When I broke my collar bone, I got back to swimming after 6 weeks exactly. The shoulder is taking longer!

    Just at the end of 5 weeks, I an active 81 year old English artist. So very pleased that I have found your videos, they are so encouraging an full of compassion, thank you so much. Nothing like this with our national health service! When I went for a check up last week they were SO impressed with what I could do, not quite back to painting yet, but a tiny bit of gardening. My family are impressed too. One day I was aching and down, but then having to tell you “I am brave” made it bearable. So a big thank you. 15:49

    Dr. Fields, Your videos have been instrumental in helping me gain my range of motion back after a proximal humeral fracture which then turned into a frozen shoulder. I can't say enough about your diverse series of excellent exercises/stretches and ROM activities! Your encouraging motivation with use of quotes and your own inspiration comments make me smile while doing the exercises. I'm still working on my ROM but without your videos, I wouldn't be where I am. I have a follow up with my ortho soon and I plan to give him your name/links if he wants to help future patients improve faster using your videos. I believe your videos did more for me than the physical therapy. Thank you for all the amazing videos that are helping me regain the function of my extremely remarkable and important shoulder!!

    Your videos have been a life saver.
    I fractured Neck of humerous 6 weeks ago. Almost no information from the doctors and no physio referral. My GP helped with some suggestions and then I saw your video and started doing things slowly and carefully. It has been a godsend. I got the all clear xray last week, so now just a matter of increasing ROM and strength. Your attitude and positive caring behaviour has been such a highlight. This has been so incredibly tough, I am a strong independent woman who loves doing things, and there have been times where I just didnt think I would ever get better, but your words of encouragement have been awesome. Thank you, and thank fate for me finding you on the web.

      @annettecashleigh2807
      My tips from experience - might help others who get little advice at the beginning.
      1. Get you arm out of the sling as soon as possible, at least a few times a day at home when and where you are absolutely safe (no pets or kids to bump you etc.) and just let the arm hang a bit. (Keeping it always in the sling can cause pain in other muscles - e.g. in your back - because they are not working as usual.)
      2. Start totally passive exercises (like the pendulum) as early as possible. I began pendulum on day 3. Let pain be your guide: when you first feel pain, that is your limit. Try to keep the exercise just below that pain threshold.
      3. Phase out pain killers asap. I only took then for the first few days.
      4. Get out for a walk or similar exercise every day, but make sure you are safe. Do other activities: read a book in the park, go to a movie, meet a friend for coffee ... don't allow yourself to sit at home feeling sore and sorry.
      5. Get 20 minutes of sunshine on the affected arm each morning (before 10am) or afternoon (after 4pm) if weather allows. Helps to reduce bruising, but I think it also speeds deeper healing... and it cheers you up!
      6. Sleep is important. For the first two weeks, I slept in a reclining armchair as I could not get comfortable in bed.
      7. A healthy diet with plenty of protein is important. Depending on your diet, supplementation may help. I am taking D3 + K2 and magnesium, and I use "Lite salt" (50% potassium salt, 50% sodium salt) but I don't say that is essential. I think the Magnesium may have helped my sleep, so that was a bonus!
      It _is_ a long haul, but there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel. 💪😄

I was frustrated as I was not given much direction after the two week visit and basically see you in 4 weeks and physio will start. As I am stubborn and determined person I was not satisfied with this direction as my lower arm and bicep muscles were killing me. Great videos. The one thing I would add is: get some sunshine on the affected arm every day if possible. (Of course, it depends on the weather ...) I get 20 mins each morning before 10am - before the UV gets too strong - or after 4pm. It seemed to clear the bruising very quickly, but I believe the infra-red part of the sunlight also helps the healing of muscles and blood vessels, and maybe the bone itself. (Infra-red penetrates much deeper than U/V.) Plus a little sunshine each day definitely makes for a sunnier disposition! 🌄 😃

      No sunshine in the Uk but I agree with getting out for some fresh air regardless. Week 1 I stayed indoors in so much pain & scared to walk in case I fell. Since then I’ve done approx an hour a day walking regardless of weather (snow recently so wore so strong gripped boots & had a partner to hold onto just in case) and I am taking vitamins supplements. It all helps with healing in my opinion. Week 6. Love this man sooooo helpful and everything he says regarding where we are at certain weeks including discomfort is spot on!

I showed him the videos and he was very impressed. Every day I am seeing and feeling improvements with the shoulder and aiming to get back cycling on the road again by mid June. In the meantime since two weeks ago I’ve been doing hour sessions on the turbo trainer. Light shoulder stranghtening exercises for triceps and biceps are great, othewise, just after being reliezed from the brace, heavy and weak arm is hanging on the healng shoulder. Early movement is better in the long run if it doesn't displace the fracture. It's that cautious versus push for the best possible outcome. I'm one to push it but have not seen your x-ray. If you can, text/email the links to your PT or ortho and get their advice that would be best. Your fracture may be such that you can advance your care faster than most and that would be wonderful. I just can't make a call like that over TH-cam. Here are the videos to send to your healthcare provider.

I am doing all your videos from week 1 till week 5 every day, along my regular physio session.

      Sounds like a possibility for reattachment surgery before these but you could try doing this series very lightly

    Dear Doctor. Thanks very much for this week to week wonderful exercises to heal proximal humerus fractures. Actually I had a fracture in my left shoulder in the middle of September and now, it is nearly 6 weeks after that. It seemed that it was not a serious fracture because two physicians agreed at the same time no need for any surgery; just resting and immobilization for a few weeks. Last week, I did a follow up X-ray and the doctor said my bone is healed already. However, I have been trying to follow your exact exercises from the beginning and now at the end of week 5-6, it is quite impossible for me to raise my injured hand above my shoulder level without getting help and support from my other hand. Doing theses exercises especially the ones for opening and raising the injured arm is super painful for me at this stage. Is it normal in your opinion or there might be something seriously wrong about my health condition ? Thanks.

      I wish I could give you 100% green light but I have not analyzed your situation myself. Do the videos, go slowly and progress as your shoulder allows. Build up your strength and continue with regular shoulder strengthening progressing to the videos that come after the series you are on:

    I'm at the end of week seven and can't do 1/2 of these exercises. I'm having a lot a pain. Doc says I'm healing good on xrays. Should I be worried? My bicep area is swollen, throbbing pain, and was very bruised after fracture. Bicep does not seem to be healing.

    Hi Dr Fields, thanks so much for all your videos, so helpful, I’m 5 weeks post surgery mid-shaft humerus fracture also dislocated my shoulder. I’m doing PT & your videos. I find my shoulder so stiff/sore arm feels tight, my PT said I can use ice after exercising, is it ok to also use heat pad?

    • @dradamfields
      @dradamfields  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kate, Ice can be a great way to get through the rehab process and avoid a flare up. With the stiffness, there is also a very good case for using heat. An infrared heating pad would probably feel great and promote healing. See what your body is telling you after both. I would find someone that does ESWT to promote a more flexible fibrosis of repair.
      It's a long haul and ice may work today and heat may be your saving grace tomorrow.
      Thanks for being here and following the path of strength

    Hi doctor it's very useful for me as I went through the surgery I am now in12th week and yet to recover.. I had to go through very rugh physio all the while and I must say it was hell.. However your video makes me feel better and encouraging to do.. I'm still struggling to do the rotation of hand.. Is it OK or I should work hard for it.. I also wanted to know how much time it will take to recover fully

      Hang in there, Jaya! You have a long road ahead (could be a year to full strength) but I am with you the whole way. Even after the Proximal Humeral Fracture videos there are strengthening videos. Start from the level you are able and make your shoulder a lifestyle of rehab. What you do in the next 6-12 months is key to the rest of your life. If you can, get some ESWT for mobility/scar tissue that would be a good adjunct. You got this!

    I am at week 6 today of proximal humerus fracture. From week 3 to 5 my arm skyrocket improved. But now I feel like since a week it's just getting more painful. I alternate daily between step 3 and 4. Is that normal that those movements hurt a bit do I go too far? Seeing my doctor this week for the final x ray...
