WOW!!! You are Over-And-Above, Absolutely, Without A Doubt, Honestly-And-Sincerely, a Queen Among Upholsters!!😊😊😊❤❤❤❤ In one video, you have taken AT LEAST 30 years of me never making a slipcover because i knew if i tried (and i did) all i would do is waste beautiful fabric, and just thrown that disastrous thought of Never making a slipcover and all my private angst about ever trying again, not only iut the window, but out of this solar system! The word AMAZING is not large enough for you. Genius comes closer, but it just pales in comparison to all you are. I sound ridiculous, but I'm serious. NOBODY ever suggested or used your method and I am blown away. You madeit look so simple, so perfectly easy, that i sat here and watched what for you was straightforward, like pouring out a glass of water. The last time i tried, on avery simple wingback chair, I ended up sewing the seam at the top of the chair to the side panel for one wing. The time before that, i ended up tearing both the seams where the arm and the back meet. The time before THAT...well, the stupid goes oon and on. Each time a disaster and then making a quilt out of a beautiful fabric. Ive cut too close, ripped fabric, sewn one piece to the wrong piece. All the videos, al. The upholsfery classes, and i find myself wishing fervently that you had made this video 30 years (and soooo much frustration 30 years ago. Your approach, your method, doesnt use a slide rule or trigonometry to achieve a great slipcover and a great fit, just common sense. By golly, you gave me hope and courage to try again and using your method, i can see EASILY that even a chair ( or sofa) with a bewildering number of angles that needed a couple hundred miles of welting can be easily done. And i could even add embellishments. I wil Sacrifice, in your honor, a Kentucky Fried Chicken...I will dance at your weddin'....i will erect a statue to your greatness in the park...and thanks to you, i now will go make a slipcover for everything in my house except that one tiny mouse i cant catch. For your wonderful instruction , again, i thank you, from the depths of my soul, i honor your wisdom and i am soooo glad you made a video for the likes of us Upholstery-Challenged wimps!😂❤❤❤❤❤❤
I've been struggling for months now whether to reupholstered my couch or make a slipcover. I'm so pleased I found you! After watching your informative video, slipcover it is. Thank you for taking the time to explain in detail all the steps involved.
Hi Anne, I hope your slipcover is going well. I will actually be starting a slipcover live today July 12 at 12:30 here on youtube and on our fb page. Join in and check it out. See you on the inside, Kim
Thanks to your videos I could do my own slipcover even though I had no idea of what I was doing nor sewing, but made me feel confident and trust the process...and I could do it 👏💪😂 and I love the result
I used your method for creating a slipcover for my slipper chair. Your instructions really made total sense to me. I wish I could post a picture. I'm really pleased with the outcome. Thanks so much!!!
Loved it! Thank you! it's the first tutorial where you can start at the front, often the most difficult area. AND you had your piping ready, something that is often left to the end. And I loved the idea of a zipper too. Now I am less afraid of trying it. Greetings from Australia.
Thank you for the video! I did a slip cover using your tutorial, and it worked very well. Mine isn't nearly as lovely as yours, but much better than I expected, and was easily able to adapt your instructions to my chair. You are a wonderful instructor.
Kim, your videos are always easy to watch and follow. I've done one slipcover following your videos, and will be doing another after taking your slipcover course!
You made this seem so straightforward and do-able, thank you. I will definitely have a go. Shame you didnt tell us about the seat cushion though (or did i miss it?!)
Great video. Presentation A+, Visual A+, Voiceover A+. I was so pleased to come across this as it gives simple instructions that I can follow and made it look doable. Presented in a voice that is easy to listen to and and all round view of what is to be done. Thank you.
Wow, the way you do that cording is a huge help! You make this look so easy -- and I know it is not . . . lol! Thank you!! I am heading out tomorrow to find a beauty salon chair hydraulic bottom! What a great back saver.
Nice job. I have two tips to keep it tight fitting. one is velcro sewn to to the IA/OA seam with a velco just rough hand sewn to the chair to recieve it. the other is to cut 3 fat dowels that will push into the IA and IB that meet with the deck/seat. then make a pocket with a long tail for dowels to fit. squash them in there. then you have a "tack rail" that you can pin to and machine as normal. it gives a great fit and almost eliminates the loose cover look when used. also reduces kick pleats sagging when sat on.
I have never made slipcovers before. I have two one-arm chairs that make a small love seat when pushed together. I bought them at a consignment store and the current upholstery is from the 70's. I made a muslin template from another tutorial, but it isn't the way I want it. After watching your tutorial and comparing that with what I did to make my template, I can see where your method is much better. I like that you used cording for your guide. That was primarily my problem with the odd shape of my chairs. They don't have removable seat cushions and I got all tangled up on the pleated seat back sides, etc. because I didn't know where exactly to sew.
+Alycia Maurer Thanks for watching and commenting. If it is possible for you, please join us on Blab Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8am EST. You can ask your questions live and get a live response. You may even have fun. Look for blab.im/kimsupholstery.
+Kim's Upholstery Dang, I am sorry I missed Tuesday. I will look at Thursday and also look at the link you provided. I have ordered my fabric and I am looking forward to getting started on the "new" version. :) I did sign up for your class on Craftsy, too. Thank you!
What a lot of work, you did a good job. I wanted to tackle mine but chickened out, didn't now how . But your video showed me and it's good to see how you did it. Thank you for sharing the information with us. You a e talented. I love doing things also.....👍🌹
Wow! You make this looks so easy~! You must have made hundreds. Lovely job of it too. What a dream machine you have there. Nice zipper job without using a zipper foot. I didn't understand how you did it w/o the zipper foot. REally liked watching you do this. Thanks!
Excellent tutorial, I've been watching a lot of others and this is the best. I will add some great tips from other tutorials but this one is has given me the greatest tips for getting it done faster. Thanks
Muchas gracias por compartir lindo trabajo, quiero pedirte por favor que si no es mucha molestia que pongas los videos subtitulados en español. Muchas gracias
Thank you again, sewing some vinyl coated fabric now for window covers as i am still learning of course, will be getting some supplies from you as soon as I feel competent enough to make a flybridge cover. , wish I learned this years ago
Awesome, beautiful, exactly what i was looking dor. Thank you so much. Can you give an idea how to estimate the fabric needed to do any length sofa, 2 seater, 3 seater etc?
Kim thx. I have a chair desperately pleading for a slip cover. That's a fancy Slip cover you made. Really cute. 🏡💝🐦🏫😊 Why do chairs have skirts? To hide the dust bunnies?? Does the inside back include; IB, deck/seat, and front drop?? I'm going to skip the cording, skip the skirt, and skip the zipper. I'm also thinking of including the deck/seat cushion and IB cushion underneath the slip cover. Any thoughts on that? I don't have a surger, I'll probably just use pinking shears on edges, and/or zig zag edges. If I have the energy, I might just add a ruffle on the bottom instead of a skirt. Yeah, I know I'm lazy. Actually I lose interest easily, and I want to make sure I finish the project.
Hi Kim - awesome video! I'm going to attempt making a slipcover for a sofa and I gained quite a bit of knowledge from this. Can you please share what thread you recommend for sewing a slipcover from canvas? I'm actually going to use dyed drop cloths. Thank you so much!
Hello thanks for the video it big help for me because i want to learn how to make and sew the seat covers ,i don't even know how to make it if it is how to use the pattern for it to make it easy?
This is a very good "how to" video. I guess you can never have too many pins when doing slipcovers? I've made some rather sloppy ones because they are necessary with my big dogs that make themselves at home. But I would like to make a more tailored look like your example. Would washing the fabric prior take care of the shrinkage issue with multiple future washings? Thanks for sharing your work.
+Dathan Hi, Yes I would wash prior to making slipcover to avoid shrinking. I usually recommend dry cleaning but with dogs that could get costly. I would not put the finished cover in the dryer, but hang dry until slightly damp and then put it back on the sofa. Hope you will go to our FB page and share your slipcover project with us. Thanks for watching, Kim
would love to be able to do this, excellent lesson. I look forward to learning more from your videos. I have a friend who wants to reupholster over existing velvet barrel chairs. she mentioned a slip cover, I am hopeful now, but with slipcovers abundant on line, it would be wiser for her to just purchase from one of those sites.
I have just found this video. If you have multiple chairs in a step to make covers for, do you repeat the process for each one, or do you made a template from the first one?
Thank you

Of all the videos I have watched on upholstering furniture this one makes the most sense to me.

Thank you so much

This is most helpful and encouraging! Thanks for posting such a well-produced video.
Thank you for the video! I did a slip cover using your tutorial, and it worked very well. Mine isn't nearly as lovely as yours, but much better than I expected, and was easily able to adapt your instructions to my chair. You are a wonderful instructor.
