I would pick the Uniden over the Oricom, but I do like the dual receive. BTW, if you are coming across quiet, make sure both sets are either 40 or 80 channel. Due to the different bandwidths if a 40 talks to an 80 etc one will be half volume.
The Uniden has basically the same functionality.... you simply program the instant priority channel button to channel 40 and then set the unit to your convoy channel.... with the press of one button you're changing to channel 40..... also you can set priority watch to constantly scan channel 40 while you remain on your convoy channel...... that way you can hear transmissions on both channels
Monitoring is the key here. The Uniden still only has one tuner, the Oricom has two. If the priority channel on the Uniden talks, it will cut out the other channel. With the Oricom, you will hear both channels at the same time. One tuner vs two tuners. Very different.
Best on the market is the Australian made GME XRS370, the best receiver specs bar none and they are actually proud to state them, in fact Uniden so poor they don't state their sensitivity and spurious immunity anymore, heh they state very few specs for a reason. I know if I needed help I'd want the best RF quality. The XRS370 does have a channel swap via it's priority button (swaps back and forth between your chosen priority channel and current channel), has an incredible 1.5 second full band scan and can maintain Rx on priority channel whilst scanning (much faster than Icom/Oricom, about 3x), has an auto voice record of up to 30s per message and a total of up to 12 minutes total recording so you never miss a message if just out of earshot and not sure if it was for you, and a 6 year warranty when you register via app - app keeps firmware updated with new features and enables location services with other XRS users.
I am glad you covered the feel of the push to talk buttons. Older units had excellent push to talk buttons, they were soft with long travel, then went solid. They meant it was really obvious when you were live, no confusion, with minimal finger pressure. New units typically have shit push to talk buttons, they are stiff, and its unclear when you are live. I owned a Uniden like yours and i would hurt my finger pressing it enough to be sure i was live, and over time that destroyed the button and i had to replace the handpiece. I theorise that the industry moved to stiff buttons because they prevent mics going live when silly people put them down on a surface rather than hang them up. In moving to stiff buttons they have solved a small problem and replaced it with a big problem. For this reason i sold my uniden with my previous vehicle, and now i am looking for a new unit that has a proper push to talk button. There is also the issue of accidentally pushing buttons on the new handpieces, and speakers that don't face towards the user. They really got a lot of things right with the older units.
Hey graham coming through quiet can be 1 of 3 things. 1. hand covering the Mic 2. Beach sand in the Mic. 3. Water /sweat in the Mic. 2&3 solutions a few bangs against your hand usually clears it.
Ive had nothing to do with oricom's but own with Uniden and GME's all good radios. I do like the idea of the twin receiver so I might check them out. Cheers Steve
I was looking into a Uniden Din CB Radio which would have been great but then thought ill one day remove the dual din radio from the old car into the other so I went with the GME XRS-330C instead due to it’s impeccable small size and the hand unit was perfect everything is hidden and out of the way.

Mine are drilled in - if you don’t want to drill I’d suggest using a magnetic mount. Install a magnet to your hand piece, install another behind the trim panel & the two magnets will attract to hold the hand piece in place.
I have a Uniden and an Icom in the one vehicle. the Icom is a commercial grade radio dumbed down to UHF so its quality is way better than Uniden, GME or Oricom. Except the mic, the Icom mics feel crappy. Also the Icon isnt very user friendly. But when it comes to performance they are streaks ahead.
@@scod3908 I have the one that come with the IC400. Its a solid and weighty feeling mic, but when you open it up you realise why, they have a chunk of flat bar in side to make it heavy. Probably so the On hook scanning works
I think I remember reading about settings for a similar function in the IC450, but from memory it was an optional setting that could be changed. I don't think I grounded mine. I would expect that there is a small potential applied to the rear metal piece of the mic and the device recognises when it's grounded? GFRP, a small speaker, and a small mic don't weigh much. I'd suggest that every plain mic with a plastic shell is likely weighted!
Sorry but oricom is not a brand i would touch with a ten foot pole, Installed it in a friends vehicle for them failed on day one, second unit also failed not long after as well, it was a know issue with them. Been doing electronics for over 20 years i can say ICOM is the way to go i use the older icom ic-400pro and ic-410pro these units have never failed only the antennas when birds wipe them out. Over all you may pay more for a better unit but why pay for a cheap uhf radio then only to have to pay more money again for a better radio. The old saying buy cheap pay twice.

Simple, logical & easy to use, buttons that feel like buttons when you push them.....and ultimately performance. Brand isn’t the be all and end all for me...it’s more important to have something that works & is easy to use.
I wouldnt waste the money on Oricom. Have had three UHF-028 models on three seperate cars, all failed within a year. For simplicity, a GME TX3500 is top of the range. But personally, I use commercial gear, particularly Simoco gear

No doubt about it - Icom make great units, they come with a nice price tag too, which puts them out of reach of most people.

Gme tx4500 good solid radio most trucks have them.or if space is limited the gme cars range nice. Uniden great radios as well.
How do you mount the bracket for the UHF hand piece to the dash,i don,t want to drill holes in my dash ,any other options. Thanks

Silicon works well, it can be peeled off if you want to remove it later.

What icom mic do you have? I find the IC450 speaker mic feels better than other brands I've used.

all uhf antennas and 27mhz ssb antennas must have a good earth to the rest of the body to the cars
