Licorice candy is made from wheat flour , sugar , licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and tasty black color E153 (vegetable carbon thats charcoal) + some other stuff .
We have known the effects long time . High potassium products are Molasses used also in candy and whole wheat , is it really that hard to make the candy safe ?
Problem is that most Americans dont get enough potassium , its like Americans dont eat fruits (bananas , grapes , oranges) , beans , peas , spinach , broccoli a.s.o
EDIT E153 totally natural black food color is banned in USA by FDA , what i could find ban came in 2018 , even when there is no regulation about it .

If you eat too much veggies and fruits at one time then yes it can kill you and that would be considered over indulging. What it means to over indulge obviously varies depending on what you consume, how much you consume and how frequently you consume it.

Thanks for getting the word out about this. My doctor was going to put me on high blood pressure medicine and I couldn't stand the thought of that. After some online research and experimentation, I found the only reason my blood pressure was high was because of licorice consumption. I told my doctor this and he was surprised, never having heard this. I only enjoy small quantities at a time now.

There isn't any Aspartame in licorice Sophie unless it's made for diabetics and I've never seen any. I've been eating sweets (too many) since I was a kid and have never EVER had any problems. NO diabetes, nada, so don't think you can't have sugar. People tend to blow a lot of things out of proportion, scare tactics, nothing more.

When a person looks at the ingredients in the foods today then almost everything is potentially lethal to a human if a large quantity is eaten or just from some of the chemical preservatives and/or food additives, etc. ALSO, even natural ingredients, such as different types of nuts, can be fatal for some people if they don't know the nuts are in the food.
Today's news say it's black licorice that's bad for you, so what food is it going to be next in the news that's bad for you? Remember when eating eggs, and drinking regular coffee were labeled bad for you because of to much cholesterol and to much caffeine? It wasn't that long ago those 2 items one was told to eat just 1 egg a week and switch to decaffeinated coffee, BUT then upon further research and studies it was discovered that eggs actually are beneficial to a person by their yolks having Vitamin D which the body needs and can't produce. And regular coffee with the caffeine in it does somewhat help relieve pain caused by headaches for many people, and it also contains a type of acid that helps the body too.

If you read the whole article it said he had hepatitis and also had a previous heroin problem in the past as well as eating alot of junk food. The candy was probably just the last straw. RIP to him and we have to be careful what we put into our bodies. I know I eat pretty bad sometimes.

I think I just didn't grow up with licorice, but I honestly hate the taste of twizzlers, they taste like plastic to me.

Anything in high enough quantities can be deadly. I guess this one is a bit more of an issue if it's staying in your system though. And on the other hand if this is shocking news it must be very uncommon for it to react this way, or very very few people even consume it.

I LOVE black licorice, but hadn't had it in years due to a previous warning about its effect on the heart. I have hbp, and a fib. I had gotten a bag of licorice just for a piece of it now, and then. It sat on the shelf for couple of weeks, and I decided to have One piece, which led to two. That night, I was awakened with a furiously racing heart, and had to call the EMS. My heart rhythm returned to normal on its own, but...in this video, it mentioned the licorice causing LOW POTASSIUM.
When I was being discharged, I was told that my potassium was a bit low. I wondered why? Now, I know FOR SURE, and, it was only two pieces. NOTE: The licorice I had contained licorice root. It is more potent, but this video stared that it was the type of sweetener used only to sweeten licorice. Good to know...save this video.
