STRIPPING Down a 1960 Oldsmobile 88 to SAVE a 1959 Olds 98 Coupe! Engine Swap Pt 1 (Old Car Rescue)

  • I picked up this 1960 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 about a year ago from inner-city Chicago, and even though it runs and drives great, it has some pretty extensive rust, so it will become a better parts car than restoration candidate. This 60 olds will save a fully loaded 1959 olds ninety eight (98) coupe that I bought in Arizona this past summer, which is practically rust free and loaded with rare options. The 59 has a bad engine, so this engine from the 60 will be a great transplant for it.
    Thanks for watching!

    Shorten the chain on the hoist as it will help on clearance when you lower the car. Windshield removal, once the seal is cut go inside with sneakers on, brace yourself on the seat or box and push it evenly with your feet, Nice & steady. Great video Keepem coming

    I've only replaced one windshield. My step brother owned a body shop. His advice was make a hole in the gasket, fish a wire through, wrap it around a wrench 2 guys like a saw run or through all the way around. It worked great!

      The glue reattaches if one does not use a mix of water and oil while sawing it with the wire.

    Grew up in these cars.
    394’s were a much more solid engine (and heavy!) than the 371. Surprised it has a knock. 371’s tended to go through rings.
    Back in the day, 394’s were used in drag cars because they could handle all the blower pressure you could give them.
    We used to use a piano wire to cut the windshield seal.
    Viqueens choked btw

    • @eddieschwab864
      @eddieschwab864 ปีที่แล้ว

      All my experience has been with second generation Oldsmobile Rocket V8, 330-455 but quite familiar with what the capabilities of the 394 are as well. Especially the fact that they can be punched out to over 500 cubic inches as well as taking all kinds of pressure from a blower. Surprised not trying to rebuild that one as well.

    Didn't know about radiators being standard and heavy duty.
    Congrats on engine cooperatin g and going out :) Altough making the mess in process. Working with the windshield is another side of the story, unsealing all the seal around it sure is massive task. There must be meters of it all around all the circumference. But this huge piece of glass is sure a sexy thing. Epitome of engineering and ingeunity.

    Hi Ryan, I will just echo what John Hunter already said. You are using too long of a chain on your cherry picker. Basically you used 2 chains, where you only needed 1. That made your cherry picker reach its peak, before you were able to clear your radiator support. Easy mistake, but even easier to fix the next time you do it. As for windshields, you're on your own. I have removed a couple successfully and 1 not so successfully. Now I just pay a Professional glassman to remove them for 60-$100. Just not worth the hassle to me. Thanks for the video
