  • Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat defended Google’s pay practices and talked about Alphabet’s growth strategies on the Code Conference stage.
“We are very committed to gender pay equity,” she said, responding to a question about the Labor Department’s accusations that Alphabet subsidiary Google is paying women less than it pays men.
She also said Alphabet’s acquisition strategy has focused on filling holes in its cloud efforts and that the Google Home and Nest suite of home devices are staying separate.

do you even worried about money? how much does running google, youtube and these other projects cost to keep them running with their servers and employees?

Kara can get to former employees HR files at Google but still thinks Google is a "blackbox".. Amazing!

How is the Alphabet structure too complicated for her to understand? Sundar Pichai leads Google with all of it's core services. Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt work with the other long term "bets" and 'smaller companies' like Nest and Verily who each have their own leaders. It was a smart move for keeping tabs on expense of each of the companies and letting Google focus on its software products easily.

What about when long term "bets" involve Google? Who calls the shots then? Who calls the shots on acquisitions or dissolving of "smaller companies" like Nest or Verily? lol even within your described structure, not clear at all IMO

Akshay I think she knows a lot about Google than any one of us, thus, the complexity
Edit: After over 4 years of making this comment, I think I mistook the original comment's "her" reference to as Ruth Porat. Op is probably referring to the interviewer. My bad!

She sounds like she should be committed then. Call up they guys in the "Good Humor" suits. She just won a free extra longsleeved jacket with backside lacing and a lifelong vacation at the Rubberroom Inn.

Have you considered if there might a sizable overlap between what a politician does and what a corporate leader does? A big piece of their role is harnessing people. They are not operational muscle. They leverage it.

I thought Kara Swisher came off a rude and almost pissed off at Google. Why? Did they not want to hire her? Ruth Porat is very solid and gave perfect answer to every question except for the competition from Amazon in search. However since Google has TH-cam, Android and Gmail their dominance in search will never end.

You haven't watched much of her interviews then. She always come off as rude and cut people off mid sentence. Remember Zuckerberg sweating through his sweater?

She is saying that Google Cloud has been slow to form big strategic partnerships with system integrators, Enterprise hardware and software companies and also slow to evolve their go to market talent as well as strategies and now (then), Diane Greene, formal Google Cloud CEO was trying to make up for that lateness by getting the financial and management help from the Alphabet board.
Important to note that Diane Greene has left the company in Nov, 2018 and the formal Oracle top executive, Thomas Kurian is now leading Google Cloud and doing a tremendous job in doing the aforementioned stuff as well as much more.
