I back up everything you’re saying as an 8th grade teacher. The class I had last year left me speechless numerous times with just the utter lack of care for learning. It’s a bit shocking. I had parents tell me, “Yeah, my son/daughter sometimes asks me what the point of school is and I have to be honest that I don’t have a great answer for him/her.” Actual parents tell me this to my face… jaw dropping stuff. I have stories. Oh I have stories. Just from last year alone. Something is happening, it’s big, and there is an accepted culture of apathy that is hard for people who do not interact with today’s 13/14 year olds to get their minds wrapped around.
It’s horror! And what’s going to stop it from getting worse? These “parents” have jobs where they use reading, writing, and some basic math right? So why can’t they simply answer with that?
@@natnonsenseasmr My favorite answer is that the point of school is learning. That's the point. To learn things. You might not use everything you learn every day and that's ok. you're a more well rounded person.
Hey Nat! You hit the nail in the head. That’s actually part of the reason I’ve been gone for a while. We became a homeschool family this year. It wasn’t an easy decision but I’m confident it’s for the best. There’s just too much at stake and I feel capable of teaching for now since my eldest is VPK. we’re using the public library programs for social exposure and as she ages we’ll likely join homeschool co-ops in our area. Parents aren’t doing their job, no discipline, so much screen time from birth is rotting these kids’ brains. I’m not opposed to screens altogether but there should be clear limits.
@@natnonsenseasmrthank you Nat! Your opinion means a lot to me. Mean it, in many instances I’ve thought of requesting a personalized video just to ask for advice from you. 😊 I know you’re well equipped to teach your son if you decide to do so. ❤
I ABSOLUTELY agree with everything that you are saying and my 16 year old daughter was telling me about clear backpacks. Also.. I think the school districts should hire more resource officers for all schools.
I'm an elementary school teacher in Montreal and I completely agree with what you've said about kids and the total lack of care and motivation as well as a lot more disrespect. I really believe we are living the consequences COVID had on kids (academically and socially)
Unfortunately we don’t have to think too far to figure out why students nowadays lack motivation and respect for the school system, don’t want to learn, etc. It’s a generational and global issue, and it mainly has to do with the fact that we live in a day and age that don’t value knowledge and intelligence anymore, it was already looked down upon when I was in school (I’m 27), but nowadays it’s not only not cool to seek knowledge and to want to study it’s also become useless. We used to live in a world where getting a degree led you somewhere in life, you would earn decent money and have a decent life, and it was pretty much the only way to have it, but these days kids get these examples of kids their age getting rich making TikToks, OF accounts, and so on. And they see where people with degrees are, sometimes their own parents: looking for jobs and when they find one it’s not paying enough to compensate the cost of living anymore, so why bother studying? Even if you’re not the kind of kid interested by making money off social media, I get why you would be so discouraged by the state of our economy that you wouldn’t care about school anymore. Economical and social paradigms have changed and we expect people to carry on with their lives the same way we’ve always done, but expecting the same out of people in a different world order is the best way to hit a wall as a society… and when you add to that the lack of interest parents have for their children, it can only get worse for these kids… My son is only in kindergarten and yet you can already see what the lack of attention does on a kid, the « popular » kid in his class that’s always trying to amuse his classmates even if it means bothering others, manipulating other kids into bothering others, and so on is the only kid whose parents I never saw, this poor boy stays in daycare before and after school, takes his lunch at school, he’s not even 4 and never sees his parents… no wonder why he’s seeking and surfing on the attention he gets from people in school, kids this age have no business being taken care of by strangers all day long… Yesterday there was a mom who was going to take her kid to school while he had been sick for two days, poor boy was looking all pale and completely off, she was mentioning to another mom how she took him to the doctor the day before and he put him on antibiotics, the kid has a hard time keeping them in and yet she was about to send him to school before he threw up on the parking lot and she finally decided it was maybe time to keep him home. I was appalled, I don’t parent shame, I know we don’t all get the privilege to stay at home or have time, but it’s France and France has all kinds of disposition for parents with sick kids so they can miss work from time to time to care for them, people would not even go to work in this state and yet they’re sending their kids to school because work has become more important to them than the wellbeing of their kid, and it obviously takes a toll on kids and their whole generation…
You’re right it’s like any kid that plays sports betting on making it pro so they only focus on that one thing. Except now that one thing is social media, for many kids. And for others their parents still act like teenagers themselves and still party and even start to allow their kids to act “grown” with them. Trying to be the “cool” parents. I can’t believe she dropped a puking kid off at school. Here the school nurse calls home and you have one hour to get your kid out of the school. Which is kind of scary if your job is awful and will fire you if you leave early. But you can’t infect the whole school and leave your kid there suffering. Ughh 😫
As a special ed teacher, there is another observable phenomenon that may or may not be related to what you are saying. The amount of disabilities and the severity are getting so high it's unreal. Private school for autism etc are completely full with huge wait lists and our public schools have kids crammed into classrooms. Our severe and profound disabilities program has 18 kids in K-3 alone! and that's in a small town! With the severity, the program has changed now too. It used to be most students could be taught reading skills at this age, and almost all were potty trained. but now with the amount of genetic disorders, severe low-functioning autism, and various intellectual disabilities, it's all changed. Most kids in the program will never be potty trained according to their doctors. And the numbers keep growing while the teachers are getting burnt out from under funding and under staffing. It feels like everything will collapse eventually.
I just read about this on a Reddit thread about systems that are about to collapse. Education as a whole but then also exactly this- numbers and severity of these conditions. There’s simply not enough staff to accommodate and it seems they done care to hire more or pay more while admin gets paid more and more. I don’t even know what the answers are but I’d like to know who is searching for them and it’s not the admin that adopts their practices and systems without even trying them out themselves.
im 22 now but when I was in middle school and high school I was the kid that never tried and I knew my parents wouldn’t care. Definitely regret not trying in school.
I think that perhaps try what they do in the UK do "catch up" lessons as in clubs yep the kids would have to stay after school for awhile but if it was done where there was catch up lessons and drinks and biscuits were provided as a insentive! Yep some of the kids don't care BUT there will be far more that do Covid has caused world wide issues major issues but unfortunately it's upto us to try and help as best we can and yep teachers would have to stay behind that's another issue but perhaps worth a try
@@natnonsenseasmr also it could help with the issues with the kids as well eg fighting arguing etc something a little laid back from the lessons in the day but getting that extra insensitive to learn
My girlfriend works at the local elementary school near me, and they are having the same problems. Kids freaking out, throwing tantrums and how do the deal with it? How about we take them out of class and give them screen time in a private room to keep them calm. We have de stigmatized bad behaviour and reward it instead now which is so backwards lol
I have a general question about substitude teachers in the US, do you really have to be a real teacher to be a sub teacher, yk with studying your subjects at university, or do you just hand out work that the original teacher has given to you and you just kinda watch out that everything goes right and noone leaves and stuff? oh and great video btw!
It varies by state. In my state you have to have a bachelors degree and take a long list of short to medium courses online, but you can’t possibly teach every grade/subject/ class the same as the permanent teacher so the teacher leaves you a lesson plan you you basically try to get through it as best you can but your main job and challenge is actually classroom management.
I just had my baby at 40 she's going on 1 yr. I have already made up my mind to do homeschooling. Between no security, teachers being inappropriate, parents not raising their children public school seems like a sewer.
I’m considering the same for my toddler. I wish there were more homeschooling “pods” because I stink at math and I don’t want to fail my kid but I’m pretty good at other stuff so I could pickup the slack for other families with reading/writing/research etc
I fear for my kids going to High School everyday. From drugs, sex and violence. My son told me that they have sex in the bathrooms regularly and the adults don’t supervise like they should. 😣 it sucks though cause most people can’t home school because they have to work. Hopefully things get better!
@natnonsenseasmr when I was in hs teens were doing bj in school bus in the back!! And sex in the gym room or back of school buildings in 2009 sooooo 😂yeah I'm sure it's even worse now. Sex is safer than gun shootings today!! 😮
I think y'all need to move , as it's only going to get worse for your kids and grandkids. That's one reason we moved from CA. We didn't know a single soul up here when we moved here. 💜😥
If they don’t get a grip we will have to. Our neighborhood and surrounding elementary schools are ok but anything beyond that is a hot mess. Unfortunately it sounds like a lot of schools are seeing similar patterns. 😫
I finally finished this video (I'm slow ok...) and I wanted to comment on not sending your youngest kid to the local MS/HS. Is this in IL or IA? I can't remember where you live. But I can tell you in IL the legislature has been extremely active in public school laws and regulations for the past 15 or so years. There's been some good from that, for example more protection for kids with disabilities from things like isolation rooms. but also there has been a LOT of bad. Disciplinary rules now are so strictly in favor of not giving consequences that kids can just run amuck. And the idea of inconveniencing parents for their child's behavior is completely frowned upon so the crappy parents have no reason to ever even consider disciplining (and, uh, parenting) their child at home. IL honestly has some of the worst laws in public education. It's a situation that is bad nationally, but is a catastrophe in IL.
Currently IA schools. But it seems like we have the same deal going on over here. I’ve even had teachers suggest I give elementary kids with extremely bad behavior some good behavior notes for home. Like what!!! When did this happen
I’m sorry but teaching today sounds like a literal effing nightmare. I hear the same things from other teachers and I’m in a “decent” area. Thank you for sacrificing your time and PEACE to try to help this latest generation 😑
