I worked in a recording studio in East Detroit from 1992-1996 where George Clinton was a resident artist. I recorded, programmed, and edited with George. In the back room were all of the 24 track master tapes of Parliament Funkadelic's career. George had this tape for me one night. I didn't recognize the title. He wanted a Show version (minus George vocals) for a party coming up. He realized I didn't know the song by its title, so he watched, smiling, as I threw up the faders one by one. When that "Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-o-o-ooo" smacked me in the face, he laughed because he knew that I recognized it now. To mix it with the guitar solo it required running the entire tape twice with some tracks muted for the first pass an different tracks muted for the 2nd pass. Then edit them together. It was cool to touch a piece of history like that.
My first week at FSU in Tallahassee I walked out of a store and there was George Clinton right in front of my face…. I asked to shake the hand of the man who changed so much in music
Was it The Disc..? If so.. Uncle George let us use his room, and I swear EVERY TIME we got ready to do a rough mix to listen to on the drive home he’d show up and kick us out! 😂😂😂😂
Funkadelic is the standard when it comes to funk,, they definitely were ahead of their time. The collection of musicians and their influence on modern music cannot be understated. “ Try One Nation Under A Groove” and “ Tear the Roof off the Sucker” enjoy ❤
1979, Columbus Ohio, SUPER CONCERT!! George Clinton/Bootsy Collins/Funkadelic/Brides of Funkenstein all opened for Prince and Rick James. Billed as the "National Funk Off". What a fantastic show! Prince was 23. He won the funk off. 🤣 ✌️🎶
Man. I wish I could have been at that show. I saw Funkadelic at Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas. They played the funk so loud they Rock n Rolled the crowd. They funked me right out of my socks!!! My ears are still ringing! LOL.
I'm a skinny white guy from Canada, and I love Parliment/Funkadelic. Request "Maggot Brain", "Me And My Folks, You And Your Folks", "Can You Get To That"... y'know what, just keep listening to them. PS - do you remember Dee-Lite and the song "Groove Is In The Heart"? The bass player there was Bootsy Collins, he was a big part of Funkadelic!
Parliament didn't "turn into" Funkadelic, they both existed at the same time, releasing records on different labels and under different contracts, but with mostly the same musicians in both groups. Parliament records tend to have a smoother R&B sound, while Funkadelic records are typically harder and funkier. There are also more groups that fall under the same George Clinton P-Funk umbrella like Bootsy's Rubber Band, The Brides Of Funkenstein, Parlet, and The P-Funk All Stars.
Actually they did “turn into” Funkadelic (namewise) because of some legal issues with the name and their record label. The Parliament name came back after those issues were resolved, but then they were 2 different styled groups, using the same members… 🤣
A few more dance/funk/R&B tracks you might like, The Gap Band - Beep a Freak; Oops Upside Your Head, Humpin; Slave - Just A Touch of Love, Watching You, Slide; Mass production - firecracker; Michael Henderson (bassist) - wide receiver; The fatback band - backstrokin’; Skyy - Call Me; The S.O.S. Band - Just Be Good To Me, Take Your TIme (Do It Right)
Thanks for taking my suggestion. We first heard this song August 9, 1979 at My Fair Lady in Detroit, the Thursday before our wedding. They recorded it in Detroit and it was the first time it was played in public
I first heard this song back in 1995 on a local radio station's "Saturday Night Old School Session" and instantly loved it! I thought it was recorded in the 80s and was therefore surprised to learn that it was recorded in 1979. The tune is quite cutting edge for '79.
I'm 63 and this was one of my favorite songs back in the day. Glad to see you enjoying one of the best songs from one of the best funk groups from the 70's 👍
I was 13 when this came out, when music was everything to us teens. This and one nation under a groove are my favorite funky songs of all! Loved watching y’all groove to this. Loved it.
I have to say I did a little dance when I saw this title on your channel. And it's no surprise that I kept dancing during your reaction. I was late with discovering Funkadelic. But I can't blame myself because I wasn't born yet at the time of most of their songs.
You all have no idea how unreal and major this jam was when it first hit the a.m. radio waves back in 79. I was in the 9th grade (that's what they used to call it before this middle school lingo came out) and when I tell you we couldn't believe what we were hearing it is no exaggeration. Once a month they held a Friday night dance at my Jr. High School called Sports-night held in the school gym packed with students and when the DJ put this song on there wasn't anyone standing against the wall trying to be cool. The DJ would always play the extended version which was over 15 mins long and there was a lot of funky teen sweating going on. This song, One Nation Under a Groove and Theme from the Black Hole (Parliament) were all bangers.
Funk,Funk,Funkadelic! Funk,Funk,Funkatastic! That says it All 👍 👍 👍 I love this 😄 Peace✌️ and Love❤️ Gary your 70 year old forever hippie 😊 Great Reaction 👍
Yeah! This is one of the funkiest funk songs in music history, and one of the most sampled in Hip-Hop music too. The first real popular rap song that sampled this was "My, Myself & I" by De La Soul.
They were the kings of funk and this was the jam back in the day. I think this song has been sampled a lot! Great skating rink music. Check out "One Nation Under a Groove", my favorite Funkadelic tune! 💜💜
My favorite song of all time I know you guys don’t have a lot of time to do 15 minute versions, but the 15 minute version of this is one of the coldest songs ever
I was 14 years-old that summer, and browsing through a record shop in downtown Toronto when I first heard this classic. Was hooked IMMEDIATELY and bought it on the spot. Next song of theirs I heard was "One Nation Under a Groove". They have so many classics, but the first two (first two for me, at least) will always be my favourites. ❤❤
@4:45 . That monkey sound is a Brazilian instrument called: Cuica. Born in 1971, watched dozens of yalls reviews. THIS is the "funkiest/souliest" song you folks played to date. Hands down. -Detroit
Funkadelic just had so much diversity to their sound and catalog. This is when Philippe Wynne joined after leaving the Spinners (you hear him at the end going Ants In My Pants..). So much to uncover with Funkadelic like One Nation Under a Groove, Standing On The Verge…, No Head No Backstage Pass, and probably their most underrated cut: Cosmic Slop due to the songs meaning.
They had so many songs in that you can get up on the dance floor and jam and they had songs that you just wanted to sit back and let the music take you over and you'll just float, especially if you're Buzzed.
I remember one Saturday afternoon walking to my friend's house to go play and ride bikes. He was washing his parent's car with a boom box playing this song. He was doing his chores having the time of his life.
Hey, J. Since you grew up listening to classic rap, I'm surprised that you didn't up on the fact that De La Sol sampled from this song for their song, " Me, Myself, and I".
"She's the Freak of My Desire", "and when she Dance. she set the World on Fire!".. I'm pretty sure that was George singing that part.. And them Bernie Worrell synths? Funkier than 3 day old Hamhocks w/ Black-eyed peas! 😎☝🏾..✌🏾
this truly one my favorites of all time if there no funkadelic at party i had leave good times with this one george cliton thank you create it. nothing like funk .
Something about the music got into my pants too, Amber! I saw you discovering that line! Yall keep on Funkin' on the 1! Great Reaction! Try Bootsy's Rubberband, "Munchies For Your Love", Maybe that's where Prince got the "Do Me Baby" funk opera from, who knows? Take Care!
A master jam!! My much older sister wore this song out (along with other Parliament Funkadelic aka P-Funk jams). When I really listen to the lyrics as an adult, I was shocked at how raunchy the references were! I told my sister she had corrupted my young mind😂. I also found a 15 min extended version of this song on TH-cam! It's still one of my favorite P-Funk songs.
Hey Rob & Amber. I love your thoughtful reactions. This song was sampled by lots of artists including Me, Myself and I by De La Soul. There may have been label issues but George Clinton and the band recorded music as Parliament (which began as a doo wop singing group in the fifties) and Funkadelic on two different labels. Most of the members played in both bands. Funkadelic has been around since the late sixties and they did a lot more psychedelic R&B flavored rock and roll when they first started. Check out Maggot Brain and Standing on the Verge (Of Getting It On) They actually weren't referencing "twerking" as this song came out before they started calling booty shaking twerking. The singer just didn't put the "T" on the word "didn't" until he said "work now". I believe, the monkey sound, you're referring to is a Brazilian instrument called a cuica. It's a drum head with a stick attached inside it that you rotate with your hand and it makes that squeaky sound. There are demonstrations of it on TH-cam. I'm glad you are getting around to Funkadelic. Check out a deep cut from the One Nation Under A Groove album called Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll). It's a jam. BTW the album version of this song clocks in at 15 minutes. It's a great workout song.
40 plus years later and these songs still hit like a sledgehammer. Hold on to your heads when you listen to Flashlight. These grooves are so funky that you would think your dog just freshly pooped on the floor.
"...funk with hot sauce on it", PREACH lmao! I just love that reference Amber, it perfectly describes Parliament's special brand of funk and why their songs are timeless.
Parliament Funkadelic is a rabbit hole...Maggot Brain, I'll Bet You, Flashlight, Contry Boy, One Nation Under A Groove, Make My Funk The P-Funk...the list goes on...they will do it to you in your ear!!!
I was exercise to this, yesterday. 🙂 When I saw the title, I repeated to myself "Please don't let them think he's saying "She/it didn't twerk!" I've seen several young people immediately sing "twerk", but he's saying "It didn't work", but with probably English, so he enunciates the words clearly. More funk - "Ridin High" by Faze-O "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa "Atomic Dog" by George Clinton "Theme from Shaft" by Issac Hayes "Outta Space" by Billy Preston
WOW! I saw them live at Prince's Paisley Park for Celebration 2017. I have to say, they carry some kind of spirit with them because they had almost everyone in some kind of trance. It was intoxicating. Check out these tunes "Atomic Dog," "Flashlight," "One Nation Under Groove," and "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)." May The Funk Be With You!
Jay & Amber, you'll love Funkadelic's "One Nation Under a Groove" !!!!
I agree on my playlist
Lobe this tune Funkadelic are so m uh fun on my playlist .love light and smiles yall ❤️🙏🙂
That's a must!
Been requesting it on all their platforms for over 2 years!
I second your motion!
OMG the fun we had...I'm so glad I grew up in the 70's....we danced and danced...
Oh yes we did!!! 70s/80s were the best.
Amen
Facts no better time.
It the musicianship and the arrangement of the music is lost today.
I worked in a recording studio in East Detroit from 1992-1996 where George Clinton was a resident artist. I recorded, programmed, and edited with George.
In the back room were all of the 24 track master tapes of Parliament Funkadelic's career.

He realized I didn't know the song by its title, so he watched, smiling, as I threw up the faders one by one. To mix it with the guitar solo it required running the entire tape twice with some tracks muted for the first pass an different tracks muted for the 2nd pass. Then edit them together.
It was cool to touch a piece of history like that.
Awesome story!, You definitely touched a piece of history!
Such an amazing opportunity
My first week at FSU in Tallahassee I walked out of a store and there was George Clinton right in front of my face…. I asked to shake the hand of the man who changed so much in music
Was it The Disc..?
If so.. Uncle George let us use his room, and I swear EVERY TIME we got ready to do a rough mix to listen to on the drive home he’d show up and kick us out! 😂😂😂😂
Cool. Indeed !!!
This is the jam. Go down this rabbit hole. They have so many great songs.
The long version is 15min long, and has a killer guitar solo! My fav funk band❤❤
They missed out with this short version
@@rochellelove3785 FACTS! This mix pretty much buries Spinner Phillipe Wynne's solo which was the selling point of the song back when it came out.
@@montauk6that was my favorite part of this song.
🤔They need a part 2🤨
Michael (Kidd Funkadelic) Hampton laid the guitar solo Out! 😎🎸🎶
Funkadelic is the standard when it comes to funk,, they definitely were ahead of their time. The collection of musicians and their influence on modern music cannot be understated. “ Try One Nation Under A Groove” and “ Tear the Roof off the Sucker” enjoy ❤
You'll like their Aqua Boogie and Atomic Dog.

So many great songs. I still listen to their music especially when cleaning full blast and I’m 71 lol
No Atomic Dog without Copy Cat.
Now how you gonna leave out FLASHLIGHT🧐
yeah ! definitely One Nation Under A Grove , will make you dance from beginning to end !
Wasn’t this billed as “The World’s Greatest Funk Festival?” I was at the one in Detroit at the Silverdome.
Newbies don't realize hiw dope Rick was. Prince and P Funk opening for him says it all
Man. I wish I could have been at that show. I saw Funkadelic at Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas. They played the funk so loud they Rock n Rolled the crowd. They funked me right out of my socks!!! My ears are still ringing! LOL.
Best concert ever I was there 😎
Concert at Arrowhead Stadium The landing of the Mother ship George Clinton Dr funkenstein
Amber immediately put on the "stank face". LOL!
Oh man! There is no way you cannot jam to this! The house parties back in the day completely turned up 🔥🔥🔥
Summer of 1979!! Wow what a Summer and what a year for great music!! You had to be alive and old enough to know what I'm talking about!! 😊
Yep, that was time, too. The70's and 80's nothing like it.
The year I turned twenty one had a blast and this was my kind of music
@jamesgeorge5276 YEP, I get It I was there.Get off work , rush home ,put on your outfit, and PARTY!!!. Nothing but good times.
Flashlight and One Nation Under A Groove are my two favorites. I dare you not to dance with them playing.
Maggot Brain has some fantastic guitar. 🔥
Maggot Brain is my weekly headspace moment!
Maggot Brain is freaking awesome
Flashlight and One Nation Under the Groove!😊
Hot Dog! I completely forgot De La Soul sampled this for Me, Myself and I! Such an iconic song.
Oh they should definitely react to that!
Thank you,... my brain was just starting to spin and figure out who sampled the beginning of this song ✌️😎
Oh YES!! Some very early rap. This was on the ''Now This Is What I Call Rap vol 2'' compilation that I had. Loved that cassette.
Also, Dr. Dre - Nuthin but a G Thang features a slowed down version of this baseline.
A Finnish group Raptori also sampled this in one of their biggest hits. The "Aaaa" vocal part.
Maggot brains is the business
This song is amazing. It's been sampled in 196 other songs. It's just such a staple. If you wanted someone to know what funk is, this is the go to.
Phillippe Wynne formally of the Spinners was a part of Funkadelic at that time.
I never knew that
@@PerryWalker-og5js yes i actually knew at the time and thought it was an odd collaboration but he was so talented.
One Nation Under a Groove mixed with Flashlight kept the Dance Floor Full of Dancers and Funk
Simply a Funk royalty all-time classic jam!! There's nothing else to say.
MY FAVORITE PARLIAMENT AND FUNKADELIC SONG OF ALL TIME!!! Sampled many times. Need to hear the extended version.
Oh that was my dancing jam back in the day. I’m a young 66.5 😂 💃🏽
You must hear their “One Nation Under a Groove”. It my favorite 😍
Atomic Dog is a must listen
Play the video excerpt from the P-Funk documentary explaining how the track was made.
Everybody on the dance floor! Whoop whoop!

De la soul sampled this for "me myself and i". 100% top quality funk this song
Not many groups put on a live show as incredible as Parliament-Funkadelic. Truly something to behold.
I GUARANTEE there’s no way you can listen to this without dancing! I’m shouting out Amber’s beautiful hair!

Funkadelic's "Can you get to that" is a great song. it was a hit on the radio 50 years ago when I was a kid.
The vocalist at the end of the song is Philipp'e Wynne formerly of the Spinners!
@@bertisjordan1085 This version cuts out his part at the end. I love the Spinners and his voice.

Truth!
