ONE YEAR LATE BUT WE FINALLY MADE IT! Enjoy my reaction and analysis for five of Pentatonix's greatest Christmas hits over the next five days for my PENTATONIX PENTATHLON!!
Peter you might check with Avi again about the interveiw. He made a video announcing that he is now an independent artist. He has full control of his career now
One of my favorites! The beautiful moving harmonies make it feel like a classic choir arrangement, and the way the song builds to Avi’s big moment is breathtaking If you’re planning to do more this season, Mary Did You Know is an incredible arrangement
This is my favorite version of this classic song. Avi is just brilliant, as always, and Scott and Mitch are just perfect. Kevin singing as well as adding percussion (I loved the wind sounds, too) always amazes me. I also think Kirstie sounds so beautiful in this. There is just something special about her tone to me that brought this all together.
One of my favorites! Thanks for the breakdown. I believe I saw an interview where a question was asked about this arrangement, and Scott said it was Avi's baby. Have a great day, cheers!
FINALLY! I can't believe you had not done this one before. This shows more than any other PTX video Avi's wonderful and powerful range, and it is one of my favorite videos they have done. Thank you for the great reaction! Not sure if you have done PTX Coventry Carol, arranged and mostly led by Avi. As you noted in this one, they added a beautiful choral part at the beginning and between each verse that is all his composition.
🤩👉Stunning arrangements from PENTATONIX. Scott is the tallest at 6'4" Kevin is about 6'1" and Matt says he is 6'1" but standing next to Kevin, Kevin seems taller.
Scott is 6'3", but Scott has scoliosis. If he could straighten the curve in his spine, he'd be about 6'7". Kevin is 6'1", Mitch is 5'11", Avi is almost 5'11", and Kirstie comes in at the short end, under 5'6", which explains her preference for high heels, all of the time. I don't know how tall Matt is, but he is close to Kevin's height.
@@kbogue5690Mitch and Avi are both 5’10. I think even when not wearing high shoes, Mitch can appear taller than Avi because sometime he comes off as long legs depending on the pants he’s wearing. Mitch has confirmed his height at 5’10. They both also look taller when not standing next to Kevin and Scott.
I heard 5 ft 4 for Kirstin, which I believe. I am 5 ft 6 myself; our late father was 6 ft 2 and mother 5 ft 2, so I am used to how those relative heights appear in group shots..
This is awesome I remember being a little bummed you couldn’t post these last year bc of copyright but so excited they’re finally here!! 😁 Great first pick for the pentathlon 👍🏻 can’t wait for the rest! 🎄
Fantastic critique pointing out each individual performance with all of your expert experience. You are the real deal in vocal technique and song quality. I can appreciate Pentatonix so much more after this reaction, and I was a true fan before.. Merry Christmas you and all of your loved ones!!! 🎅🤶🌲❤
I have always loved this song, but in recent years it has become my absolute FAVORITE Christmas song by them (or anyone else for that matter). Those harmonies are just perfect! And the buildup to the end is the cherry on top!
I absolutely love their arrangement of this song. The video setting is beautiful and the vocals are so lush and gorgeous. One of my all time favorites of their Christmas catalog and I listen to it throughout the year because I love it so much. 🥰
So great to have you back on the Pentatonix scene, and especially nice that you're dipping back to the Avi days. Thanks for such a detailed analysis and all the bass-based information. Avi's classical training gave PTX a unique gravitas that appealed to many of us, and it's heartwarming to revisit that era. What a great idea for a lead-up to Christmas! Holiday greetings from Canada. ♥🍁♥
So glad you included this song in your Pentatonix celebration! This is one of my favorite PTX Christmas arrangements, and so few reactors seem to know about it.
Ahhh, this one always makes me a little teary, it is just so beautiful. The Avi solos, so gorgeous! What a wonderful Christmas gift you are giving us with FIVE PTX reactions🤩🥰
Such a beautiful arrangement of a beloved Christmas song. Thanks for always giving such great technical commentary, I always learn so much from you. ❤🎶 Merry Christmas
Please, please do O HOLY Night. So magnificent and moving. Also the most beautiful Christmas song ever, Pure Imagination/Christmas time is here, a mashup
Former college vocal major here👋🏼. Very much enjoy listening to your reactions. Brings back good memories-and reminders of music theory I thought I forgot. 😅 They do a masterful job with dynamics on this one. 7:01 - I never caught Kirstie’s little run here before, so thanks for that. It’s lovely. Hope you enjoy your holiday!
I think you would love Voctave's You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch song. It showcases all three basses and it's an awesome arrangement! I would love to see your reaction to this song
This is my absolute favourite Pentatonix' piece! And although I do appreciate your musical analysis, I would love for you to include also a reaction from a listener only point of view (and as a listener of an entire piece, not just each musical component or section at a time). Often times we lose the message among the elements and there's something more between the lines that makes a piece a piece, isn't there. 😊
I really appreciate your reactions and assessments. So informative. I love your technical explanation of how the throat and voice work to make the sounds and notes of the song. I always learn so much from you. Mitch seems to just do this without any effort at all, doesn't matter what note he is hitting. I love how PTX puts a lot of the rise and fall in their arrangements. I feel like I'm on an emotional roller coaster. They are so Epic ! I would love to hear what your opinion is on some of their newer Christmas songs. "Last Christmas" "Please Santa Please" and "Pure Imagination" Please check these out and let us know what you think. Thanks Peter !!
Good to hear this information from another commenter. In the early years fans would argue vehemently that Scott always did the bassline when Avi sang lead, even in their official videos. I had heard an interview with either Ben Bram or Ed Boyer, talking about their decision to layer Avi's voice in Hallelujah while he was singing the melody, but I was never able to find it again and PTX purists could not believe the band would commit such musical treachery. A DJ reactor told me he stopped trying to reason with them because they simply would not acknowledge what he could hear clearly on his system. Thanks to other reactors with technical expertise and musical training, and commenters like you, the word is finally getting out there. It's not "cheating." It just makes good musical sense.
They have said in past interviews that if you hear the bass when Avi (in videos) is singing but don't see anyone singing it then its Avi and they have looped it in for continuity. Example; Hallelujah (offical video) when Avi is singing his part you hear the bass but they never show Scott singing it.
@@Gwennedd oh they have said that yes Scott does sing it in live recordings but there was some interview that Avi and I believe Kevin had did after Hallelujah came out that they said in the recorded version its Avi's bass to keep the same continuity throughout the recording and they make that known in the official video by not showing Scott singing bass while Avi's having his solo.
Thank you so much for this comment! I see there are still deniers out there who will not accept that there are some technical tweaks in the official videos. Where were you back in the day when I felt like the lone voice arguing with an avalanche of PTX fans that layering is not "cheating?" 🙂 I had heard one of those interviews you mention, so I was convinced I was right, and now several reactors with excellent creds are confirming it, so the word is finally spreading, but back in the day a DJ reactor told me he stopped mentioning it because Pentaholics would not acknowledge what he was hearing clearly on his sound system.
@@kayecastleman6353 oh I've had a few of those "disagreements" with those die hard (on the verge of mania) fans. I have only listened to them 3 times since Avi left. Matt is great for the direction in which they were wanting to take their music...good on him. But I realized I mostly listened for Avi and when he left I wasn't that interested.
Scott is the tallest at 6'3". Kevin is 6'1". Matt is 6'1". Avi's bio says he is 5'11", but I, like you, think he is shorter than Mitch. Mitch is 5'10". Kirstie is 5'4". She often wears very high heels because she says she feels so short compared to the guys. Since she is pregnant again, she is wearing more comfy shoes. Can't wait for the rest of your PTX reactions. I always learn so much from them. Thank you!
Don’t know if you’ve already chosen all your selections for the 2024 Pentathlon but Over the River with violinist Lindsay Sterling is dramatic and beautiful, and God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman and I Saw Three Ships are not featured as often but are equally as interesting to listen to for their arrangements and harmonies.
"Like a fake-out cadence." It's literally called a deceptive cadence when you set up to move from dominant to tonic and go to anything else, more often than not, the vi chord.
Hey Peter, I am subscribed to your channel and enjoy your musical chops in the form of analysis. I am a vocalist myself and thus understand much of what you are saying when it comes to vocal production. Since you are a professional musician I thought you might want to take a small side track to a premier acoustical guitarist named Tommy Emmanuel, he is an absolute Master of his craft. The song is “12 Bar Blues In The Key of E” and I know you’ll be highly impressed with his technical abilities along with his emotional expression as he plays. He really takes off with it after the first minute. Here is the link to the song. th-cam.com/video/qQhECkexmSI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FWseCDdtOtRh-DBm
Nice analysis. I don't see that you have ever looked at Lara Fabian especially since she is quite a favorite of Dimash. Je Suis Malade or Adagio are good places to start.

I've been looking forward to this all year.
I've been lookingforward to this all year!!!
Been waiting for this. 😁
@@PeterBarber this is one of my favorites! Thank you, Peter!
My absolute favorite Christmas song that they do. Avi's voice is like a warm, comfortable hug for your soul.
I love Avis voice ❤❤❤
Peter you might check with Avi again about the interveiw. He made a video announcing that he is now an independent artist. He has full control of his career now
I love the how bell-like and clear Mitch's voice is.

Love Avi’s voice and his solo work is amazing. Hope that you will react to more of his own music.
Amazing arrangement of the beautiful song! Love it. And love Avi's rich and smooth voice.
One of my favorites! Thanks for the breakdown. I believe I saw an interview where a question was asked about this arrangement, and Scott said it was Avi's baby.
Have a great day, cheers!
It really does have Avi written all over it, as do so many of their classic Christmas arrangements.
Thank you so much for this reaction! I wish Avi would put out a Christmas album now that he's solo! His voice just melts my soul. ❤😊
He has said he might do
I love that idea.
I love the look on Kevin’s face as you’re saying they are building, it’s like, “just wait, we’re going to get you!”💜💜💜

Scott only covers the bass line in live situations. In recording they layer tracks so the baseline is all Avi.

Scot’s the tallest- he’s 6’3”-6’4”. Kevin is right around 6’.
💕🎶🎵💕
Did you notice that Kevin was doing body percussion while singing?
🩵🖤🩵🖤
Idk if Kevin was lip syncing because he can sing in his own right. I think its Amazing Grace he gets a solo.
Recommend their original, Please Santa Please.
Scott is 6’3, Kevin is 6’1, Mitch is 5’10”, Kirstie is 5’4”, Matt Sallee is 6’1”, and Avi is supposedly 5’11”.
Scott is actually 6′ 3″ and Kevin is 6′ 1″.
