I wrote a paper on the Tanzimat period in school. I was amazed at how basically no one knows about it and how close the Ottomans still came to reform the empire. If it all would have started earlier, i say it woulf have been successful.
@eraycicek yes in the end it doesnt really make sense to go "if only they had done..." all empires fall, ottomans were successful enough it wasnt realistic that the empire goes on, age of imperialism was just over Atatürk saw that correctly

I came here expecting a standard (if interesting, because I like the Tanzimat mechanics) Victoria 3 video, and I found one of the best narrative lets-plays I have ever watched! Not only is the gameplay pretty good (I like the roleplay mod), but the alternate history and narrative aspects of the video are incredibly well-researched and well- put together. I probably learnt more about 19th century Ottoman history in this video than I did with the Istanbul Museum Pass! You've earnt yourself a new subscriber (I can't believe you don't have more). TL;DR: Came for the Vicky 3 gameplay, stayed for the alt-history and Ottoman history lesson.
First time viewer and now a subscriber, absolutely good video. I also liked how you implemented the roleplay, instead of just seeing the ruler traits and political situations as a way to negatively impact the country you choose to use them as way to divert the reforms into something that would fit the ruler's personality. I really liked that, too many rp centered channels and playthroughs just focus on the negatives and try to intentionally play badly.
This channel always rocks. And to calm my pity, in terms of magnitudes and percentage distributions, 14k views is halfway to hundreds of millions, right guys?

To be honest, the Mongols only destroyed a decadent, corrupt and declining version of the Abbasid caliphate. Their Golden Age was done. The only real difference would be that Muslim world might be more politically united, although even that isn't guaranteed. There could've been an unexpected Islamic equivalent to the Protestant reformation.

The Abbasids themselves extinguished the golden age. But if they really did have diplomatic relations they would still try to take power over the Abbasids. They would then be able to push into Europe much easier due to extending less manpower to overpower other Muslim powers

Especially compared to iran its very successful. It could start earlier but well its hard to make a change when there is no need to solve a problem.
