teams still do this in high school basketball. I love seeing it, just because of the fact that it is such a significant part of basketball history

@hoosnation Dean Smith was also one of the leading advocates for the implementation of the shot clock.

If it supposedly killed offense and was so boring, how did the final score manage to be 78-70 WITHOUT the 3-pt. shot? And how did Phil Ford manage to be the Tarheels all-time scorer for almost 30 years until just a few years ago?

It was unique to Dean Smith back in the day. This was before the shot clocks. Then, they would just pass the ball around until a shot got open. It's called "Four Corners". ;-)

Dean Smith won almost 80% of the games he coached in his career, and many of them came with the help of offenses like the 4 corners. Smith was the BIGGEST proponent of the shot-clock in basketball, and why wouldn't he be, he normally had the best athletes. He won under the rules of basketball, and he didn't make the rules. Once the shot-clock entered the college game, UNC became one of the fastest offenses in the game, and remain one of the highest scoring teams in college basketball.

Why in the world did those two defenders come all the way out to half court to guard those guys instead of staying back and helping to guard Ford?

My hometown is Rocky Mount NC and went to the same high school as Phil. Greatest point guard in NCAA history IMHO !! I miss the "student" scoreboard the used to have in the corner of the court. Go Heels !!

why the hell is the defense guarding the two guys that are near midcourt?

I played against teams who would slow the ball down against us to prevent themselves from getting blown out, I always hated this still of play and was so glad when a shot clock was implemented for high school and college.

@hotjun This is nothing. Imagine being in the audience during the game between the Fort Wayne Pistons and the Minneapolis Lakers, where the Pistons won by a score of 19-18.

@tinitunz Sorry, but that too, is nothing. NC State beat Duke in the 1968 ACC Tournament semi-finals in Charlotte by a score of 12-10. Duke led 4-2 at the half. People like to point at UNC, but many other teams held the ball. It took the NCAA way too long to change the rules.

You can see how the four corner can ruin the knees.
