  • Watch this conversation to kick off the opening of "Art and Race Matters: The Career of Robert Colescott" with exhibition co-curators Lowery Stokes Sims and Matthew Weseley, moderated by Grace Kook-Anderson, the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Northwest Art. Sharing their deep knowledge of Colescott’s career as well as his time in Portland, Sims and Weseley will cover the subjects in Colescott’s work ranging from art history to racial stereotypes.

    I remember seeing Colescott's work ( George Washington Carver Crossing The Delaware ) in highschool ,this painting would have a profound effect on my work from then on. After viewing European paintings and conditioned to favoring them, I knew then being a black artist meant that your work had to be on the cutting edge and was to be expected .
