- Project 365: Cathy Richardson posts a song a day, every day in 2017. 6/25/17 Day 176 Voices Carry, 'Til Tuesday cover. Using my portable keyboard so apologies for the cheesy synth sound, but I couldn't hear the song without that part!
This is EXACTLY the way I've been searching for someone to sing this song. Absolutely marvelous. Thank you.
Cathy takes this 'Til Tuesday/Aimee Mann classic and makes it her own. It's an entirely different take on the song. As originally performed, it is a plaintive cry of a woman locked in an emotionally exploitive relationship, but more a victim. Here, Cathy sings it with the strength and vitality of a woman on the verge of claiming her own identity and asserting her own agency and determination. THIS is a woman aware of her situation and about to move on. Such a strong vocal!! Outstanding. "Cheesy synth" works and bridges this interpretation with the original. I played it 3x and then went back to the original just for comparison. While I really like the feel and tone of the original, this puts an entirely different spin on the song...here, a strong, self-possessed woman is singing this...about to claim her own identity. There's hope at the end of this performance, whereas in the original there's resignation. You just have to overlook the backwards baseball cap, which is a visual that undercuts the strength and determination of the vocal at the conclusion. Nevertheless, outstanding. Cathy is a force of nature. But I'm sure she's heard that before.

Powerful voice!
I just noticed two really interesting things: (1) Notice how Cathy looks off to the right (her left) when she sings the first line "in the dark I like to read his (looks left) mind," as if he would have been right there with her; (2) then she squints as she sings "frightened" in the second line "but I'm frightened (squint) by the things I might find." There may be more...I'm not gonna got through the song and inventory all of them. Suffice it to say, that it's little non-verbal things like this, congruent with the song, that makes Cathy such a subtle and at the same time OUT THERE (yeah, she can get LOUD) vocalist and song interpreter.

Aimee Mann sounded wounded and fragile when she sang this. You sound like you're going to put down that guitar when you're done and go kick his arse and solve the problem. Nice job.
