    The lack of music made this game very atmospheric. As a kid I always felt like I was playing a horror game, like I was the last man on Earth having arrived after the aliens had killed off nearly the entire planet's population.

    i know it wasn't great but it was still very enjoyable. Me and a friend skipped school one afternoon to play this. I remember running around the empty stadium level. The school rang the house and my friend answered by mistake and we got busted! what a dumbass. Didn't regret it though. great game. great day. miss the 90's

      @@FuriousMan226 he said he was sick. Then they rang his mother at her workplace, she rang the house, my friend told her he was sick so had stayed home that afternoon. That was it. I was in a different class, they assumed I was running late and had missed the register. case closed. terrible school really.

    My brother and I rented this one so often from the local video store that the guy there ended up giving it to my mom for free so we could keep it.
    I would venture a guess at many hundreds of hours being spent on this co-op. Probably similar to how many hours we spent with Goldeneye and Diddykong Racing/NHL 99 which were our "big" N64 games.
    Great game, worth a play-through for sure!

    i loved this game. in my personal opinion i actually liked this game as much as goldeneye. I loved all the secrets hidden throughout the levels. i think a lot of your negativity of it comes from experiencing the pc version first. most gamers back then didn't play pc games so this was one of our first experiences like this. I played the crap out of this game.

    I have fond memories of this games MP. I vividly remember playing the stadium map. It had four entrances to the field which could be opened and closed. This is important because my arse of a brother concocted a plan. During a match he proposed to science the medicine X (i believe) which gave you super speed. So, we met at one of the goal posts and lined up. I were to run at full speed with med X while he would shoot a missile paralell to me with the goal of seeing which one was faster. What i did not know, was that he had loaded a heat seeking missile, not a regular one.
    I won the race, but then i noticed that the missile was tracking me. I laughed at his feeble plan, and headed for one of the exits... closed. Med X at 60%... next exit.. closed... Med X at 30%...He was laughing up blood and i were cursing him in elvish, orcis and probably some dialects unknown to man. It was great fun,hinking back.

    • @J.W.J.
      @J.W.J. 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That stadium map was the best. I used to mine the shit out of the field and shoot some sort of missile or beam weapon (been 25 years I can't remember exactly) everyone who survived the mines

    The weapons are so much better than in the original 3D. The freeze gun suchs and the grenade launcher in Duke 64 is the best weapon ever, especially in multiplayer...

  • @onewithsource9742
    @onewithsource9742 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is a bias review imo. Forget the pc version and take it on its own merits. This game yeah had a few dull moments, but for 97 and cartridge?? This was an amazing achievement and me and my friends newish to Duke back then literally started our own cult following. The multiplayer battles brought more laughs and fun than any game amongst me and my friends. A sure fire cult classic forever in our eyes, we always quote it. Love this game forever. I still have one n64 cartridge but no console. Duke nukem 64 is that cartridge!!! "I guess he Didn't escape from LA!!!" explosive shotgun shells, multiplayer, stadium - more laughs than any game ever for me and my pals. Peace

    If youre a big fan of duke nukem you would like this game too. peronally grew up to this game i do wish it had the music, but i prefer the plasma gun over freeze gun. Heat seaker was better than the devastator in my opinion. I loved playing the AI on dam im good. it was a real challenge lol

    I loved this version of Duke Nukem, and it was actually my first experience with the franchise. I can remember seeing it advertised on TV during Monday Night RAW back in the late 90's. I rented it many times from a local video store, and knew that I had to have it one day! I spent HOURS playing the Deathmatch against the A.I. controlled bots and had so much fun with it. My favorite level was Hotel Hell for single player. I remember kiting the aliens upstairs and trying to trap them in the different hotel rooms. XD Such good memories for me. I'm glad I still have this game, and I still love it to this day. Great Review.

    I had a love hate relationship with this game. I remember being horribly upset with changes that were immediately noticeable, stage one is now set during the day, and there is no music. Then the horror of Red Light District getting turned into Duke Burger. But the game grew on me and there were plenty of fun nights with my buddies deathmatching in Castle Dukenstein.

    The "Lazy" version of Quake? I mean sure you'd be well within your right to call it downgraded and not as creatively diverse as, say for instance, the same team's port of Doom to PS1 or Doom 64 or Quake 2 for the N64, but lazy? take one look at how badly the Saturn port of Quake fared by Lobotomy Software who made Powerslave/Exhumed (and the Saturn port of Duke 3D) compared to how well Quake 64 runs.
    Porting anything from PC to console at the time was never the lazy option purely because of how many workarounds and changes would have to be made, regardless of how the end resuly turned out, so to get even close to a 1:1 port would be more of a sign of hard work because of the effort that would have had to be put in to get it to that point.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure the n64 version of quake isn’t as bad as Saturn but considering they could and perhaps really should have at least added the 4 player mode it seems such a cop out

    • @Vakantscull
      @Vakantscull 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@n64glennplant Understandable, I just have a lot of respect for Aaron Seeler and co for their work in bringing id softwares library to far more limited consoles, especially considering how badly some console ports fared (Shadowmans PS1 port being thr first big offender that comes to mind) I'm just more glad they got the base game playing as well as they did, but then Ive never really been one for the multiplayer experience so I can understand how you would want that to be implemented and running smoothly, considering they managed to add it into quake 2

    Great review this was a great port for the time just a shame there is no in game music which really drags it down for me I can only assume this was either due to lack of cartridge space or perhaps more likely to reduce the load on the N64s cpu to keep the game running smoothly as the N64 has no dedicated sound chip as the music plays in the intermittent screens but not in game just like Doom on the Atari Jaguar for the same reasons. Also strange that the game would include the strong violence but remove the swearing as it got an 18 rating anyway.

  • @ClovissenpaiDotR

    I played the shareware episode of this first game when I was super young, my older brother had it installed on the computer. Our computer was destroyed and I missed playing the game, then my mother managed to find a second hand copy of this port so I could play it on the N64 and I really liked it, I thought it was a very solid port. The only complaint I have that I cant understand why, is removing the Devastator in place of the Missile Launcher. The Devastator was the most satisfying/fun gun to use in the game by a margin, then they replace your RPG with a grenade launcher just to make the devastator a missile launcher? I love all the alternate ammo stuff but they could have kept the RPG and Devastator as they are and had heat-seeking devastator missiles or something.
    I also miss some of the levels like Tier Drops (my favourite) but all things considered they did an awesome job repurposing a couple Atomic Edition levels as bonus episodes, and how they reintegrated the Expander as a weapon you could get ammo for throughout the game. All things considered this was a very solid port for the limitations of the N64.

    It's funny how games that were released already dated seem to hold up better now than they did back then. When I look at this game, I just see Duke Nukem running well on the N64, and I have no idea that it was released 2 years later than the PC original. And of course that doesn't matter at all now. It only matters if I want to play it or not.
    When I think about Doom running on the SNES, I remember that this really was the earliest Nintendo console that could have run this game, so the N64 is where it belongs. Of course we would have loved some improved graphics like the Doom 64 treatment, but at least the released it.

    • @RottenMuLoT
      @RottenMuLoT ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. The game runs surprisingly good with an expansion pak. I can clearly feel the 60 fps which is really impressive for a N64 game. The censorship now feels more like a new game and tbh I come to realize Duke Nukem is as good without this sexism and misogyny BS so kudos to Eurocom!

    I like your series but one thing that annoys me is the aspect ratio of the game play footage being stretched from the original 4:3 AR. Is there any way for you to fix this in the future?

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for your feedback :) its not stretched its transcoded and scaled into 16:9 as personally i prefer how it looks. i know its not everyones taste but i can't please everyone :D also some games did have 16:9 as an aspect ratio in the settings such as goldeneye so its all about preference really

      ***** no problem Glenn, just one of those little things that kind of annoys me. I typically watch the episodes through my tv and I can manually change the ar myself but figured I would give my feedback. Anyway I appreciate the content and continue to enjoy it! Hope to see more homebrew and beta episodes soon :)

    Great review and as I said before I have fond memories of this game although I feel the PC version is far superior this was my original entry into the game series. So it was worth the buy I remember seeing this in the rental store but not being able to rent it.

    I think it's a great version of the game. For one, the fact that the levels are slightly different isn't a negative thing, it's great to re-explore. And while I agree that the lack of music is a big downer, this version does have the best (in my opinion) rendition of Grabbag EVER!

  • @WillZ4E
    @WillZ4E 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was the first version I ever played back then, so I couldn't see any of flaws or differences from the PC version, plus I was a kid. I loved it. The times spent roleplaying (pretending the secret areas were our homes/bases lol) or dicking around in Deathmatch with my friend lead to a lot of secrets found, and some interesting glitches.
    Also your profile pic comes from that old N64 magazine from the UK, doesn't it ?

    I did like a few of the weapon changes, like the plasma cannon replacing the freezer, and the bonus ammunition. At the time, they also made other additions (Overlord clones, Protector Drones added to Lunar Apocalypse and Shrapnel City episodes, and some of the 3D effects).
    However, the removal of the adult content sucked.

    I played this game to death as a young fella and as the 64 is by far my favourite console and still gets a relative hammering, I decided to just throw in the old Duke Nukem 64 for a bit of fun. The game is as fun as I remember and I'm not somebody who bashes graphics 20 years in the future BUT MAN THE CONTROLS!! Even as an avid 64er today with experience on the single joystick 3d games, I cannot get used to the controls. Maybe because I upscale the game to 65" UHD TV with a good quality upscaler for which this console was not designed, the controls are unbearable. The smallest touch of the stick completely overshoots where you are aiming. I'm finding it completely unplayable. What a shame, really.

  • @darthboxOriginal
    @darthboxOriginal 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I recently realised this existed, I was really excited, as I had loved the original, but had only finished the (actually reasonably good) GBA version. The addition of co-op was a huge bonus. From my perspective it was easier to get this than to fuss with the PC version on a modern computer, and play without co-op, which to me is great. As for the lack of soundtrack...that's sucks, but it does give you the opportunity to put on your own music. My mate that comes round for games and I struggle a bit because we love the in game sound tracks of many games, but slso love sharing music...this gives us the chance to game and listen to whatever without losing out on the intended game experience.

    Good review, although I'm surprised by your assessment of the multiplayer. My friends and I found it so much more fun than Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Turok 2, or any other shooter on the system. The bots, while dumb, added a lot to the game and made 2 player DM matches more interesting, and Piracy was one of the most enjoyable multiplayer maps in Duke history.

    When it comes to FPS games, I had always wished that Star Wars Dark Forces was ported to the N64. The PS1 version suffers from a terrible frame rate and at the time my family didn’t own a competent PC. Since the game already used a MIDI soundtrack it seemed like it would have been a perfect fit.

    The grenade launcher on DN64 was the best weapon in any FPS ever! You could bounce the grenades off of walls and have them roll around corners and blow up yet unseen enemies, and if you weren't careful, you could blow yourself up mistakenly, which was comedic in itself. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't like that weapon. If they are upset that the rocket launcher was replaced, then I propose a remake that has both the grenade launcher and rocket launcher. Who would oppose that?

  • @jankjason
    @jankjason 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Duke Nukem 64 has to be the best console version of Duke Nukem 3D, it was worth having as a secondary version if you already had the PC version but now there's a mod of it for the PC version.

    My favorite version of Duke Nukem 3D is Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition for the PC, though the first version of the game that I played was Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown for the Sony PlayStation. One of my friends still has Duke Nukem 64; we played the multiplayer quite a bit in both cooperative and deathmatch. I also played the single player mode and thought the new weapons were really cool.

    I noticed you were "saving" the babes in the game, I had no idea that was possible in this version of the game (I have the game sitting on my shelf but I only got it for collection purposes and only ever play the PC version of the game). Is this the only version of the game where you can do that? Pretty sure you can't in the PS1 port.

    Loved this game, it had a great multiplayer mode and was great fun with friends. Tons of levels, great weaponry. Co-op singleplayer was a great addition and was superfun. Weak points for me personally were probably graphics, enemies and items were sprites, overall not the greatest but perfectly fine. And singleplayer lacked music.

    i love your channel, it's all about my favorite console. there is only one flaw i have about it and there's nothing that can be done about it, though. the flaw is that you live in a PAL region, i live in the US. because of this, i am never too sure of what's rare and what's not, because, rarity often depends (in n64 sake) on types of cartridges, and how they were received. Like "Clayfighters sculptor's cut" was only in block busters, and a rare game in only America was the Turok Rage Wars grey cartridge, it fixed a glitch in co-op, in pal regions, they were all grey.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      generally if i don't mention regions when talking about a game it means its the same across regions like this one. if a game is rare in certain regions i do try to mention that. for example snowboard kids 2 NTSC is uncommon but in PAL its one of the rarest games as it was only released in australia and the rest of the pal region didn't get it. there are lots of weird and wonderful examples of this :)
