    Who would have thought 40 years ago... what a great little production with wonderful graphics/video!
    I'm in the process now of making a dummy out of a white oak log. My brother made his out of willow and said drilling the holes was a challenge so I'm sure white Oak will be one even more so.

    This is definitely the best tutorial on TH-cam! I'm working on a dummy myself using these plans.
    I made a jig to mount on the body to assist in cutting the criss crossed arm holes. I cut a piece of wood 11" long, or whatever the width of the body may be, for the dummy in this video it would be 9". Then I cut the pieces into long triangles that go from 0"-2". Next set the depth of your circular saw blade to 2". Screw the jigs on either side of the 2" notch where the arms will be and start ripping away with the circ saw. Clean out the notch with a chisel. Now unscrew the jigs and mount on the other arm hole notch and repeat. I hope this helps!

    I've checked out a lot of videos and yours is the most efficient and inexpensive way. Nice share. I'll have to post a response video of my construction. I have a few modifications I want to make that will allow for Kali and some added esthetic features I've been dreaming. Thanks again.

    Just wanted to say thanks for all the videos you posted and the quality and instructional videos very good high quality stuff I wanted to post a pic of my wooden dummie but don't see how to do it yet, made mostly the plans that you put out and the ideas that I got from you except for the MDF board we followed everything else instead of MDF I use 2x10's out of pine was definitely harder than probably the MDF but all came out real good I was very fortunate to have a friend who has all the equipment I needed and a lot of experience using them turned out good maybe later I can put it on my TH-cam channel and others can see what I made thanks again

    Heavenly, When you drill the holes for the arms, you drill from one side half way, then you take the drill out, and you go to the other side and drill in to meet the hole in the middle. With the arms, you dont need a lath, just a lot of sanding will make the arms rounded. Have fun building.

    TABLE LEGS was a very clever idea. I'm building my Wing Chun Dummy out of a solid dead oak tree that is still rooted in the ground. It's perfectly straight-standing and it's diameter is just right. I removed the bark and at the point of making the holes and creating the Arms & Legs. I'll sand it (120, 200 Grit) and seal it. If I ever move; I'll just cut it at the base. Thanks!

    you could use a reciprocating saw to cut the angle holes, but if you screw up, you're in trouble cause power saws cuts too quickly and are not accurate. you can also cut triangles out of wood, the same angles as the angle cut that you are making, then mount them over the cut area and use it as a jig. As well tilt the dummy so that the angle becomes level, then use the circular saw to cut while using the triangles as a jig to rest on.

    Nice guide. Only issue I see is that the two upper arm holes are touching each other. Never seen that on any dummy I have trained with. So I would suggest you offset the second hole so they are not intersecting. Will make it stronger as there will be some wood in between the holes. Otherwise nice guide.

  • @TOMMYBOY6969

    Byodawg, Sure , you can use the logs to make your dummy. You just have to do a lot of drilling for all the arm holes. The only thing is that logs always crack along the grain of the wood over time. In China, that is how they made them using logs.

    I traced my own leg on to paper, placed it on half the dummy before i glued it together. knowing the dummy's position when its standing up, then transfer that paper leg to the dummy. From my other dummy that i bought, i know that the tip of the foot is 15" from the trunk of the dummy, and the chin is 13" from the trunk and the foot hangs 2" lower than the base of the dummy.

    Just curious about the upper square arm holes. In some diagrams they are 1.5 inches. Does it make a difference? Your diagram shows the square holes as 2 inches by two inches. What are the upper offset arms in inches for the upper arms when the square holes are two inches?

    • @TOMMYBOY6969
      @TOMMYBOY6969  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you advance this video to 5:27, you will see the dimension of the arm's square to be 1 3/4" x 1 3/4 ". So that means that there is about 1/4" for the arms to wiggle. If you see other people's diagrams having a smaller square hold in the dummy like 1.5 inches, that just means that they want to a a smaller support.

    • @TOMMYBOY6969
      @TOMMYBOY6969  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yes, 2(2x10). Together, that will be 4"x10"x5'.
      Then you cut it down to 4"x9"x5'.
      Now you add an other 1/2"x9"x5'. Actually, this can be 1/2"x5"x5' because it will be cut off and rounded any ways since this is the outside of the half circle.
      Glue them all together, you'll have a 4 1/2"x9"x5'
      Now you make 2 of these 4 1/2"x9"x5'
      Together, you'll have 9"x9"x5'
      Have fun making it!

    I have not made one this way yet. I made mine out of a solid piece of cedar wood 28in around and chiseled out the holes. The angle of the holes have to be exact or the dummy will be of no use. Your technique will be off. I will be doing it this way next. I would put a piece of flat Metel at the top end to prevent from cutting any off the top.

      In my method, you do not need to know the angle and it will come out perfect. In my video 3:08, you would see that the hole is not cut all the way through. The hole comes out on the other half of the wood.

    I want my wooden dummy to be a stand alone. I’m 5 10 so I obviously need a taller body. So do the dimensions for the arms and leg remain the same from the head down ? I’m assuming I make up the inches on the lower part of the body

    • @TOMMYBOY6969
      @TOMMYBOY6969  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The arms are high and low only because the way it is built, they can not be at the same height. Inside where the arms goes into the dummy,, they cross over each other therefore one has to be higher than the other. Some other makers,, they make the arms at the same level, but it is less strong because where the arms crosses inside,, the arms are half as thick...

    Hi how are you did you used 1 inch plywood or 1/2 inch

    • @TOMMYBOY6969
      @TOMMYBOY6969  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not important for the thickness as long as when you put the sheets together on top of each other that the plywood becomes 4.5 inch high. But i would think 1/2 is good because you will need 9 pieces. If it was 3/4 then you'll need 6 pieces. I would not recommend 1 inch cause then you'll have to put 5 pieces together to make 5 inch, which then when you round off the dummy,, you will have to sand off 1/2 to get to 4.5. Me, the plywood came just a little over 1/2 inch so i only need 8 pieces

    • @TOMMYBOY6969
      @TOMMYBOY6969  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, these measurements are good. I have observed many other dummies that are correct and this is how they are. Any space you have at the exit holes, if the holes have any space between them,,, then your arms in the front will be too far apart. This is a major problem which most people gets wrong when they built their own dummy. I didnt make this up, i followed the exact measurements of Chinese dummy measurements.

    One thing, is there a certain height to make this fo myself? I'm 6'5"

      The Dummy is exactly the same size,, you will just mount it higher when you make the stand. The 2 top arms of the dummy should be the same height of your shoulders when you are in the wing chun stands

    PLEASSE, COULD YOU TELL ME THE INCHS OF THE LEG???

    • @TOMMYBOY6969
      @TOMMYBOY6969  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no standard size for the leg. I traced my own leg and according to how much wood i had left, then made my own design for the leg.
      Some used a natural tree branch for the leg, etc.

    can you use a used telephone pole bro?

    • @TOMMYBOY6969
      @TOMMYBOY6969  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, but hollowing the holes would be difficult.

    • @utubepunk
      @utubepunk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tempting, but I wouldn't. Telephones are treated with very toxic carcinogens to preserve it from the elements. I think Tommy's method here is the best approach.
