Bauhaus School of Design

A combination of the German words “bau” (building) and “haus” (house), the #Bauhaus #movement pioneered by #architects Walter #Gropius, Hannes #Meyer and Ludwig #Mies van der #Rohe aimed to fuse new construction materials and methods of the time, thus creating a style that helped launch the #Modern Movement as well as have a profound impact on #20th century #architecture.
Founded in #Weimar in 1919 by Gropius, the Bauhaus #school was also based in #Dessau from 1925 under the directorship of Meyer and finally in #Berlin from 1932-33 under van der Rohe. The buildings that were erected to the specifications of Gropius and Meyer and housed the school in Weimar and Dessau are today listed as #UNESCO World #Heritage sites for being “fundamental representatives of #Classical #Modernism” with “consistent artistic grandeur” that are “important monuments not only for art and culture, but also for the #historic ideas of the 20th century.”
