  • The Bauhaus school of architecture and design’s legacy continues to influence today’s society. But what became of Bauhaus’s utopic visions of the future?
bauhausWORLD - The Code (1/3): • Architecture, art and ...
bauhausWORLD - The Effect (2/3): • Architecture, art and ...
The three-part documentary bauhausWORLD marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of Germany’s best-known art, architecture and design school, the Bauhaus. Exploring the legacy of this iconic German institution, our film crew traveled the world, meeting architects, artists, urban planners, doers and dreamers. Do the Bauhaus’s social ideals and design principles still shape how we live today?
New approaches to education and training, architecture, painting, dance and design were explored and developed at the Bauhaus. Its founder and director Walter Gropius attracted the leading creative figures of the era, including Hannes Meyer, Mies van der Rohe, Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy, Anni Albers, Josef Albers and Gunta Stölzl. Today, Bauhaus is considered the birthplace of Modernism and has become a byword for sleek, functional design.
Founded in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus school moved to Dessau in 1925 and then to Berlin, where it was forced to shut in 1933 after Hitler seized power. Most of its artists, architects and visionaries emigrated, fanning out and spreading the Bauhaus doctrine around the world.
Filmmaker Lydia Ranke and her team traveled the world to make the three-part documentary bauhausWORLD. Alongside the Bauhaus sites of Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, they visited Tokyo, Amman, Tel Aviv, New York, Chicago, Medellín and Mexico City, talking to experts from Norman Foster and Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao to architecture critic Mark Wigley, furniture designer Yinka Ilori and fashion designer Kasia Kucharska.
The third and last part of bauhausWORLD, "The Utopia", explores the influence of the Bauhaus philosophy on today’s globalized society. What is its legacy? What became of its utopic visions of the future? Do they still have relevance in the 21st century? We find out if the questions that Bauhaus posed have been answered, and if we can still learn from the solutions it proposed 100 years ago.

@@miyojewoltsnasonth2159 Visually appealing [architecture] would simply mean designing beautiful buildings that people actually want to live in (basically the oppsosite of that monsterous concrete ghetto displayed in this series.)
I also believe that good architecture should play an aestethic role in order to be pleasing to the eyes, and be in harmony with the surrounding area and nature (as if it had always stood there like an anchor of security and harmony to people). Almost as if it serves a human spiritual need for beauty (like art) on top of being practical. I also believe that good architecture resembles the human body in a way, it puts attention to details, it uses environmentally friendly materials, and further, it forfills human physiological, practical and emotional needs, such as need for adequete daylight, ceiling height, space, temperature (and beauty) etc.

Kudos to Lydia Ranke and her team for bring this fascinating document together, threading through a century of Bauhaus. For me, Bauhaus was simply a miracle made possible by the unique collaboration between the leading artists and designers of that period in history when revolutions were born and raised. The universal applicability of the ideas bears testimony to the genius of the initiators. I deeply appreciate how the authors re-establish the idea of better design for better life through norman foster in the end.
I live in Bangladesh, where there is the distinction between the artist and artisans, yet crafts are still in vogue, incredible artisans apply centuries old techniques and methods to new products. Crafts other than those in the textile sector are on the wane. Many artists work closely with artisans and produce fantastic products. Wondering whether a new Bauhaus could be opened here!

The document represents a very simplistic explanation of what the Bauhaus was and is today. From the beginning, it was an ideological movement starting with Itten's very radical approach, continuing for example with Meyer embracing communism. Concerning architecture for people, there was not only the Bauhaus but also, for example, CIAM - a modernist movement that spread around the world, in which Gropius was only one of the founding members and he and other people involved in Gropiusstadt design were definitely more influenced by CIAM than by the Bauhaus. Also in the previous part of this document about Dieter Rams - he was not influenced only by the Bauhaus but by modernism in general and mainly by industrial designer Peter Behrens (who directly influenced both Gropius and Mies). The project in Mexico is nice and very important but it is most probably influenced more by Alejandro Aravena and his social housing projects in Chile than by the Bauhaus (I personally doubt that the Bauhaus ever thought about the possibility of house expansion by homeowners). The Bauhaus reference gives Tatiana Bilbao a historical framework but I do not believe that there is a deep understanding of the Bauhaus original ideas that would be reflected in her design. However, I still appreciate this document. It was nice to watch it and think about all these simplifications - one had to explore and examine what had been already stored in one's head.

The Bauhaus was so close to the Zen principle of Simplicity. We need this approach now more than ever. The planet can’t sustain complex designs in any field; and our brains are so overloaded, we need to simplify our environments. I loved Braun products as a kid - they were so elegant and honest in their designs. The essence of Simplicity, nothing added, nothing wasted. Jonny Ive and Steve Jobs had continued that legacy at Apple.

Tiny houses are not for everyone: you can't have and raise a family there. You can barely have a partner on 7 sq meters. Older people won't find climbing the steep stairs very useful due to safety issues. So it's mainly for very young and single (or solitary) people. Plus I think the claustrophobic vibe would affect any person sooner or later. This is not a very good idea, it doesn't solve the housing problems at all. Is that any different from trailer houses in the USA, which are very problematic? I don't think so.

One can easily recognize how outdated all the philosophy of contemporary architecture is by no mentioning the discriminations of children, elderly, disabled and pregnant women. there all barriers of all sorts in new designes. blind people or ppl even with sight problems have problems in modern buildings. elderly who use wheelchair, walker have problems, small doorframes, steps everywhere, very heavy doors which are not really user friendly if one has a walker or sits in wheelchair , the homecare nurses cant use lifters in bathrooms, since bathrooms are so tiny that no lifter fits in, also a second person/ a nurse cant get in to help. the bathrooms have barriers, patients like the elderly cant use bathrooms, and the disabled ppl too. corrdors, floor entrances, doorframes, bathrooms, kitchens are always too small designed.
big buildings arent social friendly, mostly too anonymous and gangs can form easily mobs to abuse their power, the buildings arent family friendly, mothers and fathers cant communicate with their children if they are outside, bc they are in the higher floors.
the society is globally getting older, which come with illnesses and disabilities , architects, politicians must build all buildings, including publich transit accessible for all people in all age to reduce cost bc if ppl can not be independend and can not take care of themselves as long as they could with all the aid provided, it will become much more costly for everyone.
also, no one wants to hear this, but it needs to be adressed sooner or later. the world population grows, in general it grows, even with wars and stagnations in some countries. the resourses for water, arable landsize shrink rapidly. for the sake and dignity of the coming children and generation, the world needs global family planing, birth rate monitoring, free contraceptive for girls and women, who have least say about their bodies. girls need global free education, no payment for schooluniforms like in many countries , getting rid of the unnecessary uniforms is a start for the girls. childbride needs to be really punished bc it is still happening.
