My grandfather passed away September 2021 when I was 15. When I turned 16 in October 2022 I played this song on repeat ALL DAY LONG because he loved doo-wop and the 50’s-60’s songs and it reminded me of him. I cried a lot that day.

Another great doo-wop group from the 50's-60's. The Crests were the first interracially mixed group, consisting of three African American members (one female), one Puerto Rican, & one Italian American. "Sixteen Candles" was their biggest hit but they had other good songs such as "Step By Step", "The Angels Listened In", "Trouble In Paradise", "Six Nights A Week" & "A Year Ago Tonight".

At that time, people like me were young. We didn't care what color the singers were, it was the music, the songs, the lyrics that we loved, danced to and memorized. I can still sing along with this song and a hundred others. I had to hide it from my parents often, my dad especially. I bought one of the earliest headphone sets so I could listen to the Orlons, and many other too numerous to mention.

when you went to a party back then the girls would gather 'round and sort through all the .45's and decide which ones to stack on the record changer. typically six or seven. slow dance to 16 Candles, a few seconds while the next record drops into place, and hope it's something just as romantic - because that made things very nice for the guys dancing with the girls. it was a great time.

My hat's off to you two young music lovers. I grew up with this music, doo-wop. It shaped me, and I owe it my gratitude. I also sang it...in my high school years and way beyond. From your reactions I get the sense that you feel and understand what the sound is about, as much as is possible for someone whose generation is more than 50 years later. If I could take you back in a time machine to the long ago yesterdays of this music's heyday, when lyrical melodies and exciting vocal harmonies filled the air, I think you might not want to leave it.

The Crests were a ground-breaking multiracial pop/doowop group formed in the mid-1950s when singer Johnny Mastrangelo joined forces with a doowop quartet comprising three African-Americans and one Puerto Rican. As time went on Johnny Mastrangelo became Johnny Masters, Johnny Mastro and then Johnny Maestro as he turned to solo recording as well. Having had a minor hit on the Joyce label, they signed to Coed Records, and in 1958 had a major success when Sixteen Candles was a US No.2, kicking off a career which brought several more chart successes through into the ‘60s as Tony Middleton and James Ancrum took over lead vocal duties from Johnny Maestro. Interestingly, The 1984 John Hughes’ teen film Sixteen Candles took its title from The Crests’ song, which was re-recorded by The Stray Cats for the Sixteen Candles soundtrack. Johnny Maestro, went on and enjoyed a decades-long career with The Brooklyn Bridge, has died of cancer, Marc24, 2010. He was 70.

Sean, speaking about soap; you got it, The Jarmels, had a big hit out in 1961; "A little bit of soap". You and Mel have to hear this one. This is easily a 1k reply. We are really enjoying your channel!!! Thank you, guys!!!

One of the truly great voices of his generation. Listen to lead singer Johnny Maestro sing "The Worst That Could Happen" with The Brooklyn Bridge for more of his great voice. More evidence that the music of my generation makes today's stuff sound like the junk it is. In contrast, listen to Sam Cooke do "Only Sixteen" and of course, "You Send Me".

Don't forget "Blessed Is the Rain" and my favorite, "You'll Never Walk Alone" for the power of the vocals and instramentals.
