      Yea i highly disagree lmao, this is so barebones, id much rather the doll houses that i had as a kid than a cardboard box lmao. Especially for $100. It would be so easy to DIY if you bought some sheets of cardboard and painted them. The only reason id get this would be if i was a collector.

      My older sister's friend once was bored and drew for me doll's house in a 24 pages notebook. She also drew dolls and clothing when i wanted something new i would just cut out a new dress for a doll. That paper doll house was so good! I was playing with it since i was 6 untill like 13 yo🤣

      Mattel probably switched to plastic BECAUSE kids were realizing that they could make their own Barbie furniture from cardboard, which meant that Mattel couldn't make as much money selling extra pieces of furniture.

  • @dodisrestorationandrepair6339
    @dodisrestorationandrepair6339 4 ปีที่แล้ว +179

    LIsten to your granny, Jen. First, your dreamhouse is a basement apartment. It was common back in the day to do conversions of basements into living spaces. That's the reason you see "small" plants outside the "windows". The bright colours were to hide the fact that it's a basement! Young people back in the day could afford such apartments, and older folks bought homes after moving out of those basements. Even in apartment complexes of the time, the attic and basement apartments were the cheapest ones. I had such an apartment when I first moved out. I had forgotten that until I started writing this.
    Second, those "insert tab A into slot B" instructions were how we learned to assemble pieces when we graduated from Tinker Toys(a real product, check them out). It's the same principle as Ikea, so we learned construction as children. It wasn't a girl or boy thing, it was just what any child did. The board games of the time also had such assembly instructions.
    So...Jen...trust me, you don't want to fall down the rabbit hole of "just one more doll"! It's how I got into the mess I am today. Just one new cool doll will lead to an encyclopedic knowledge of dolls for the last 100 years, and there's always something new to learn. Tressy, Crissy, Baby That-A-Way, Tammy and her 4 sisters and Mom and Dad, it just spirals out of control if you're not super careful. Pick one doll line or one era and concentrate on that. You'll be glad you did, trust me! So glad to see that you had fun because that's the whole point, to have fun with our toys!

      This is the best comment I read SOOO far in YT. I appreciate very much you took the time to write it, because sometimes we don't realize how much we can extract from, socially considered "silly" things, such as toys and stuff, even now a days. Thank you very much. And excuse my mistakes at writing, I'm not a native English speaker.

      @@Macabre.Lara13 Thank you! It is easy to find the cultural clues if you know what to look for. "Normal" at the time when something is made can tell you how people thought! Like the apartment I described was perfectly normal at the time, so can the "tiny house" movement be an oddity in the future. Learn to look at things, not just see them. Your English is great! Best wishes!

    I wish I'd gotten this playset - I would've if I knew it came with a doll - as yours looks lovely. I really appreciate the size of it - not enough barbie apartments - as the fact that it is colorful without drowning in pink like the modern barbie places. Even more important is the depth of the playset too as it feels like there's real room to play in it vs. the modern houses that seem more like double sided displays than true houses.

    This is so cool! I knew about the old dream house and how it was made out of cardboard for the most part, but i had no idea i'd actually like it this much! They should bring that concept back. Building your own furniture sounds a lot more fun then just plastic and it would be a lot better for the environment to use less plastic.

    I can't believe that they kept everything true to the original Dream House EXCEPT the records! The original record albums were by Nat King Cole, Sinatra, The Four Preps, & The Kingston Trio. Why in the world did they have to mess with that??? I have the original Dream House myself and those records. And you are correct, no doll came with the Dream House. Great job putting it together and setting it up!

    NexJen--The original Barbie clothing of 1959 featured zippers and they were VERY well made. When Barbie was issued, Vogue Dolls Ginny and Jill (and Ginger and Jan and Jeff and Ginette) were already in production. Those clothes, too, were VERY well-made. Barbie (and Ken a year later) were, indeed named after the doll creator's children. They were high school graduates, college co-eds, and then they entered parallel careers. Barbie was a cheerleader; Ken played football and baseball. Barbie was a nurse; Ken a doctor. Ken piloted a plane; Barbie was a stewardess, as they were called back then. They each has separate careers, too. Ken was an enlisted sailor; Barbie was a babysitter. They even got married at one point. Original-in-the-box Barbie clothing is difficult to find and quite pricey. About 15 years ago or so, Mattel re-introduced Barbie and Ken reproductions with some minor changes so that the true originals didn't lose value. By the way, if you ever have a chance to visit a military on-base store, you might find Barbie and Ken as US Navy, or US Marine, or US Air Force, or US Army personnel. No word yet on whether or not Barbie and Ken will sign up for the US Space Force, although Barbie has been an astronaut.

      @@NexJen--Thank you for the kind words. I collect dolls, mostly dark-haired, green-eyed dolls of the post WW II era (yes, I am an aging Boomer). When Barbie first was marketed (1959), my mother decided that I was too old for dolls and when she finally relented (when I was 16), the box of clothing was all made by my mother. Like all but two of my childhood dolls, this was passed on to a younger cousin. I have since purchased a reproduction Barbie as well as a reproduction Ken, and I bought a US Navy Barbie when I was in the US Navy. One is NEVER too old for dolls. By the way, you might try finding a Deluxe Reading kitchen that was sized for Barbies. My baby sister had one and all three of us played with it (no Barbies at the time, though; just the kitchen). Deluxe Reading made knock-off dolls that have stood the test of time rather well and many are available on the after-market, such as eBay.

There were Bratz minis too, and I had the house for them. It had an elevator with a string on top to move it up and down. Makes me want to go back in time and play dolls again.

My collection had grown so large I've given away a few dolls during the years but when I saw the 1962 Dreamhouse advertised my grandson saw how excited I was and bought it for me! Now ... the issue of where to set it up? I appreciate your upload as it's refreshed my memory, I confess I'd forgotten how large it is. The house looks great, the colours, mid-century furniture style and of course how lucky 'cause this time 'round we have a doll and clothes, too! Can't wait 'til tomorrow arrives 😃

      @@NexJen Thank you for your reply; my grandson spent almost 2-hours constructing and it looked great alas, too large - so - furniture assembled, doll and accessories set aside we boxed everything away and have the box on display. The artwork still looks great and in time when we've a couple more display cases the vintage repro furniture will look great amongst some Barbie originals and repros waiting for display. The box looks great and it was fun albeit for only a short while, to view the whole thing put together. Great reproduction from Mattel but I wonder how long it'd withstand kids' play before the cardboard began to buckle - perhaps, more suitable for collectors. Ultimately doesn't matter 'cause toys are meant to be enjoyed - display only or actively engaged or both.
