One of the most stunning (and overlooked) Sci Fi movies of the 1960s is JOURNEY to the FAR SIDE of the SUN (1969) starring Roy (TVs The Invaders) Thinnes and produced by legendary British Sci Fi mastermind Gerry Anderson.
I saw Barbarella on TV in the 70's. The technician responsible for the broadcast did not know we were seeing what he was viewing. He replayed the Excessive Machine segment 4 times in a row before resuming the film. I guess he lost his job.
Charly was a fantastic movie that you never hear about any more. Cliff Robertson got the Oscar for best actor in his role as Charly. As others have pointed out it is based on a story called Flowers for Algernon, which got a Hugo Award for best (Sci Fi) short story in 1960.
Wow, I didn't know that even though I vividly remember reading the story. I almost don't want to watch it as I'm almost tearing up thinking about the ending.
Thanks for reminding me about "Charly".. I had to read "Flowers for Algernon" in school. A film like that could not be made today. The 1960s were a ....unique.... time.
@@rogerrendzak8055 ha! It’s an old British saying, basically meaning that’s it’s like two ends of the spectrum…so far apart…that sort of thing. Or trying to compare apples and oranges. I’m not sure of the origin of the saying though!
2001 is a masterpiece. Awesome in 4K. Planet of the Apes is another great film. And The Green Slime is a hoot of a film. I have not seen the other two, but I am told Charley is a very good film. Like to 50s the 60s were also fun times for Sci-Fi.
I remember seen Charly when I was a kid, around 8yo, and I remember feeling so sad about him. He ended up being alone because being smart all of a sudden, cursing his new intelligence and wanting to go back to his old self.
I had not seen "the Green Slime" until after I purchased a game that said it was inspired by this movie. The game is called "the Awful Green Things from Outer Space" and it IS very similar to the movie which, of course, I just had to find and watch.
Barbarella, is one of my all time favorite's, it's art is amazing, Beautiful Girls, Handsome Men, totally bonkers, and a great soundtrack, so funny, My Elder sister would call my Wife " The Matmos. A suggestion Film. " Matango" ( Attack of the Mushroom people) Japan. pre dates Gilligan's Island . ( 7 people shipwrecked)
My Dad took me in 1968, to go see 'The Green Slime', '2001, A Space Odyssey', and 'Planet Of The Apes' (thank you, Dad). All in theaters which unfortunately, are razed now. Been, for a long time now. 'Charley' was adapted, from a book I was required to read, in highschool. At that point, I haven't seen the movie. The book is titled: 'Flowers For Algernon'. It's a good read, but with a depressing ending. Just like, the film😥. 'Barbarella' kinda sucks, especially since, it's based on fantasy. An angel, really😆??? The closest thing I get to 'Barbarella', is the Arctic Monkeys' song; 'Arabella'👍😁 !!!
Fun fact: Kubrick filmed 2001 in the highest resolution film available at the time, x2 the normal resolution which is why 50 years later it looks like 1080p quality.
Sunday papers got a lot of criticism from parents for running full page color ads for Barbarella in their color comics section. I remember seeing one in the Chicago Tribune.
Barbarella is well worth a watch. It’s silly, but it’s pretty well made. I’m not sure if 2001 should be on this list. It’s already known as a classic. You can’t be a sci-fi fan and not have seen 2001. So many other good movies that were forgotten but you left off this list! Zardoz, Silent Running, Outland, Dark Star.
68 was a special year in Paris! I was a student then and I remember we removed a bigger than life ad of Jane Fonda for Barbarella from a movie theater to put it inside our classroom… Memories…
@@ahoj7720 What a great anecdote. Your time was they heyday of that kind of student life, and yet in small ways it reminds me of my experience of it a quarter-century later.
Patty Duke was in "Valley of the Dolls". "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" was a semi-sequel with little relationship to the first movie, although the themes of decadence carried over. The second movie was co-scripted by Roger Ebert!
I've seen all a number of times, except "Charley". It looks interesting. I found "Barbarella" to be fun and sexy and can understand how she became such a sex symbol after this movie. Of course "2001" is loved by many, but I found it to be quite pretentious and just boring. But the special effects, as well as the sentient computer Hal, were both unique and surprising! Another great video! Thank you.
2001will always be #1. It's the grand daddy of all SyFy movies. I hate all Star War movies. They suck. And that's the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so (from 976-CREOLEMAN)!
@@marcelmischeaux2099 LOL! Yes it is a great movie, but it just dragged out a little bit too much for my taste. But it certainly broke new ground when it came to the thinking person's sci-fi movie! I think Star Wars is more for adolescent boys, but there are a lot of men that love the series. Probably because it's like a space Western.
A rather eclectic list. Green Slime was goofy fun, 2001 was straight sci-fi Planets of the Apes placed in between them. Not sure about Charlie, some science, more drama followed by Barbarella which was more goofy fun.
There is something to be said for bacterial/alien decontamination procedures before exposing the rest of the crew. Cause, as you see, you might have a Saturday morning combination out break of Bugaboos, Puff n' stuffs and Dr. who/What creatures. These guys though with only two tentacles and a very annoying whine are really no threat as long as you put on earplugs and beat them back into the green pea soup they came from.
I'm not sure 2001 is a 'gem'. Gem implies something great but small, possibly obscure. 2001 is a "masterpiece" or an "all-time classic" - it's too big, too famous, too good, too influential to be a gem. Planet of the Apes is in the same category.
Nice job not mentioning a single author of the books or screen plays these movies were based on. The great majority of directors and producers back in the day didn't understand sci-fi worth a damn and many still don't today. Kubricks take on 2001: A space odyssey, by Arthur C. Clark was brilliant, but I defy anyone that hasn't read the book to explain the last ten minutes of the movie. Barbarella was truly bad science fiction, as well as an awful movie. Jane sure looked good though!
Green slime in the same breath as 2001 ? oh the shame. The New York critic called it, Green Corn. should not be here. Charly was good. Planet of the Apes can stay. Take your pick of any of the following Fantastic Voyage, Fahrenheit 451, First Spaceship on Venus,

“Charley” is really derived from the short story “Flowers for Algernon”.
Charley is a precursor to “The Lawnmower Man”.
