    Together with The Tank Museum, located in Bovington (UK), we will cover all sorts of tanks that played a part in World War Two. The first tank we cover is the T-26, which saw action during the Winter War in both Soviet and Finnish service and during the Second Sino-Japanese war in China's army. For those of you who watch our regular episodes, the fact that the T-26 played a big part in the Winter War is not a surprise anymore. For those of you who didn't: get over there and binge them!
    As Indy says in the end of the video, we could really use your financial support on Patreon. While this video was shot by the Tankmuseum, it still needs editing, image research and factchecking from our side. We plan on doing more of these with the Tank Museum in the future - since we think they're awesome and the top experts in their field, but also with other partners, historians, experts and museums.
    See you next time!
    Joram

      In the video, the historian said that those Germans said: "to buy some Panzer off of Germany, ok thats normal, but they also said to buy some tanks off of Britain, their enemy (the German enemy). How did that happen? BTW your show is amazing, keep up the great work, love from Latvia

      @@valcha6156 Germans didn't say "buy stuff from Britain". Word "they" at 13:28 refers to the Chinese buying tanks from the British at later time. Also, at this time WWII hadn't begun, so UK wasn't an enemy to Germany.

    The picture of the "Molotov cocktail" also shows the other primary Finnish anti-tank weapon that was actually more effective than the cocktail: the satchel charge or "kasapanos". They came in several sizes, from two to six kilos (c. 4.5 -- 13 lbs) of TNT fastened to a German-style potato masher hand grenade handle complete with fuze, but field-produced versions could have a simple stick handle and a simple blasting fuze. A two-kilo charge was enough to break a tank's track while a six kilo charge would destroy the tank if thrown onto the engine deck. They were also used against bunkers. The main drawback was that you had to get in close to throw the thing and -- particularly with the bigger charge -- you might lose your hearing at least temporarily when it went off. As for the Finnish Vickers 6-tonners, they were first armed with WW1-vintage short-barreled 37mm Puteaux guns from the old Renault FT's and only later with the 37mm Bofors AT guns.

    The T-26B also played a big part in the Spanish civil war, becoming a prized item to capture for the Fascist forces as it totally out gunned the Italian and German tanks they were using. In fact the fascists modified some of the Pz.I.A light tanks to mount the Italian Breda 20mm. L.65 autocannon AA gun in the turret to give at least a minimal anti-tank capability against the T-26.
    The Spanish also based their own manufactured tanks on the T-26, after the end of the civil war. These were still in service as late as the 1960's.

Also, in some ways, the T-28 can be thought of as metaphor for the early-war Soviet tank arm as a whole: that is to say, in 1933, when it was new, it was one of the best medium tanks in the world; in 1941, when Operation Barbarossa hit, it was showing its age.

    10:31 - this is one of the examples of why I've always been a staunch opponent of calling all Soviet citizens "Russians".
    The fact of the matter is that there were many Ukrainians and Belorussians fighting in the Winter War, because of the losses suffered by the Soviets in the early stages of the conflict, and partially because of Stalin's distrust towards people of the northern parts of the Russian SSR - the Soviet leader feared that, since they were their "neighbors" for years, they might sympathise with the Finns, and therefore went on to send people from Belarussian and Ukrainian SSRs to this front. The tragedy was that these people, especially ones from southern Ukraine, were even less adapted to the cold climate encountered in Finland, leading to thousands of soldiers freezing to death or losing limbs, toes and fingers to frostbite.
    But, because of the tendency to generalize all Soviet people as "Russians", the tragedy of other East Slavic nations forced to fight Stalin's war is often omitted. In fact, I've only learned about it after a meeting with a reenactement group specialised in Finnish Army during the Second World War, a lot of publications on that topic never mention this chapter of the Soviet-Finnish conflicts.
    A somewhat similar situation would repeat itself 40 years later, when the Soviets entered Afghanistan: initially they'd sent in the troops from Central Asian districts, but after a wave of defections to the mujahideen side by Uzbeks, Tajiks and other Muslim soldiers, these forces were withdrawn and replaced by people from western parts of the USSR, such as the Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States.

    • @Shurikova666
      @Shurikova666 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For your information, southern Ukraine is open steppes. In winter, there are piercing winds with snow. And there are many cases of death of lost and frozen people in the steppe.
      The defection of Uzbeks and Tajiks to the Afghan Mujahideen is a bias. There were individual cases, of course. But the Soviet Asians showed themselves very well in the Afghan war.
      Stalin's distrust of the inhabitants of the territory near Finland-I agree.

    • @Shurikova666
      @Shurikova666 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Joseph Lisitzayou forget that for about 70 years, Soviet Asians absorbed European culture in half with Communist ideology. Most of the inhabitants of Central Asian cities were already industrial workers in the third generation.And they looked at their village relatives as Laggards in their development. Look at the photos of Soviet Asians living in cities. They are dressed in European fashion. (Unfortunately, many Europeans are victims of wild stereotypes about the USSR. )

    • @Shurikova666
      @Shurikova666 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Joseph Lisitza I understand you. I also want to remind you that the selection of recruits for the war in Afghanistan was carried out. (and of course we took into account the personal characteristics and biographies of recruits from the Central Asian republics of the USSR.) As an example of this, the so-called "Muslim battalions" subordinate to KGB combat units. One of them participated in the storming of Amin's Palace with special forces units and performed well.
      And I am convinced that the combat characteristics of a soldier are influenced not by their ethnic origin, but by the environment in which they were raised.

That and delays in british tank production and finnish gun production is why tanks were not ready when winter war started.
