Joseph Campbell was an American author and teacher best known for his work in the field of comparative mythology. If you’ve ever heard of the “Hero’s Journey,” you have him and his lifelong commitment to studying mythology to thank. This book (written in 1949) is the one that captures the essence of his thoughts on the “monomyth” that shows up across all cultures. One universal hero. A thousand faces. Big Ideas we explore include: a quick look at the hero’s journey, moving past the veil of the unknown (aka romancing your discomfort zone) while creating micro hero journeys (all day every day), your ultimate boon (don’t make King Midas’s mistake), the mistake that the makers of legend made (growth mindset, guys!!), and a portrait of the modern hero (look in the mirror!).

You are missing the point of mythology if you think simply asserting that “we all can do that” will in any way help humanity. That is the destruction of the heroic that inspires all of us to be the best we can. So be careful there. ❤ There is always your own brand of hero. Finding who you are and being that. I think a snail and an octopus are heroes. Trees are. Bees. ❤ I CANNOT do what they do.

I know I’m a little late to this video, but I just wanted to throw in my two cents about the divine appointment/special destiny archetype that is common in most myths. I can see how that idea can seem like it’s closing the door on some people’s potential by just saying “you’re not special like this hero is in the myth,” but I don’t think that was the intended interpretation from the storytellers themselves.
As you mentioned, the structure of the Hero Myth is based on presenting a metaphor for the human life. That is why stories are so powerful and resonate with people so much, it’s because the human brain recognizes the pattern in the narratives and applies it to life as a whole. This is a good thing, because of this, as Campbell said, the myths can serve as guides to teach people how to live and how to partake in the human experience.
Now, applying this same lens of symbolic meaning to the characteristics of the hero, you can see how the special/divine/unique nature of the hero is not to say that only specific individuals who are predestined for the journey can partake in it. Rather, the special gifts/abilities/talents of the hero are representative of the special gifts and skills which each individual human possesses.
From person to person, the difference in skills and talents and gifts ranges widely. Some people are excellent in communication, others are better at perseverance, and still others are skilled in art. There are certainly gifts and talents which make each individual unique and different from another. I believe that this is what the myth-makers intend to convey through the Hero’s special gifts.
While the hero can use his special gifts and abilities to complete his journey, each individual can also use their talents and unique qualities to accomplish their goals and complete their own journey.

Although the archetypal 'hero' manifests as a thousand faces' and ways nevertheless it is under the overarching political/ cultural/religious Patriarchy (and rooted firmly, I might add.)
The faces of Women are merely and predominantly in relationship to god/ man.
Joseph Campbell was instrumental in illuminating the quest cycle and yet definitely in need of an update .
It always concerns and disturbs me that we so blithely and blindly continue on with the same
"half- Story" that highlights and expounds the" master- story". Cultures are shaped by the stories it tells about itself and so are you/I ...We are the stories and myths we repeat and tell ourselves. Seeing the world unfolding as it is, the transformative powers of telling both the female hero's journey aong with the most often heard male experience, would help in moving the needle towards the future we want/ seek as opposed to the future as a further result of
" the sins of the fathers." Finding your Bliss ought to be and is the spoken language of wholeness .. of the avenue and trajectory of humankind in its fullest and deepest and mythologized experience and expression.

I would say, moreover the hero's journey as seen in all the myths, pop culture, literature, etc., are products of the hero that dwells in the collective unconscious than I would say they are directly influenced by Joseph Campbell (although some of them may be)

Regarding the hot take on Rey, The Last Jedi, and Star Wars, the following are my thoughts on the matter.
The criticism of Rey in The Last Jedi as someone who didn't earn their abilities is a fundamental misunderstanding of what Rey as a character is all about, and above that the Star Wars films as a whole. Granted, it's fair to ask: How many Skywalker Saga films are primarily concerned with showing the value of hard work among average peoples? Not many. It's there with the minor characters, for sure, but pales in comparison to the main themes and primary stories of wizards fighting each other with their laser swords, who happen to be either masters and apprentices, father and son, or grandkids of Force wielders. The big theme in Star Wars, and so much of life as it should be experienced, is about something greater than any single "hero": the light side and the dark side, and recognizing the balance between the two through the stories of those most deeply connected to those sides.
Training montages are great for sports movies like Rocky or The Karate Kid. But even modern sports films spend much more time exploring internal and emotional aspects outside of "hard work", such as Ford v Ferrari and even the Creed films. The Christian Bale character in Ford v Ferrari is simply the best driver, with no explanation as to why, and we don't need to know. He just is. And we believe it because of the kind of person he is, and we want to see him succeed not in spite of his one deep flaw, but almost more so because of it. He's a character we can all identify with on some level, or at least can recognize and root for to succeed. The same is true of Rey.
The Force awakening in Rey is essentially proving the idea that talent equals the speed with which one can pick up skill. But to say that her ability is not a good lesson for soceity because she didn't earn it? This approaches a bad lesson for society, that those who are differently abled for reasons we don't understand should be looked down upon.
Look at Rey's story. We find her alone, a survivor, a scavenger struggling just to exist, an orphaned young adult abandoned as a child, someone who wishes to belong to something greater. Magically, it happens. And it freaks her out. She doesn't understand why, but she does know one thing: how to survive. So we want to see her struggle and work hard toward acceptance of her abilities and her situation and try to use it for good, as the same power in different hands - Kylo Ren's - has been used for evil.
Also: "I wish Star Wars had a sort of talented person who worked really hard to become extraordinary, the best Jedi out there." They did. His name was Anakin Skywalker, and he became The evil Darth Vader. Also Ben Solo, who became the evil Kylo Ren. Also Luke Skywalker, who after all of his hard work to become a powerful Jedi essentially created the evil Kylo Ren, and thus exiled himself just like Obi-Wan and Yoda did. Because working hard to become extraordinary is not a guarantee of success, at least not in the way that you had hoped. But notice the theme of The Last Jedi, spoken by Yoda: "The greatest teacher failure is."
When someone is "talented", and simply just "has it", or seems to be "born this way" (whatever that means,) they are not free from hardship and struggles and doubts. I think of A Beautiful Mind immediately as a great example of this. And one thing consistent with the sports films mentioned above is that they are so largely concerned with the self that they rarely learn anything about other characters. They are primarily absorbed with the self, and in that sense, their families and friends and situations and aspirations, all through the filter of their own "hero's journey". Stories of extremely talented and sensitive people are often tragic ones, but do not have to be.
Joseph Campbell once spoke of the rituals that young boys would be put through in order to become men. One was that of a young man whose eyes are covered by the initiator, while frightening animal noises, made by a bullroar swung lasso style causing it to spin, attack from all around. The young man is told this is a dragon coming to kill him. Afraid, the young man is convinced he is as good as dead. No amount of "hard work" will help him at this point. What happens internally? Campbell said, "You're think you're dead, and *ding* you've broken past it. What has died [is] the infantile ego." Sometimes, we open our eyes to epiphany and simply see things differently than we did before. Sometimes, there is an awakening. Have you felt it? I know I have. And hard work versus innate talent has nothing to do with it. It's about becoming aware of our gifts and abilities and how they relate to a world that is greater than ourselves.
