I thought that it was King Yemma's decision to let Vegeta keep his body because it was a back up plan in case things with Buu got out of hand. I didn't think it was necessarily the fact that him sacrificing himself was why he got to keep his body.

I think it's a likely possibility that Beerus is the one who killed him. Pikkon probably tried to stop Beerus from destroying a planet one day but ultimately lost and got killed, but not with the Hakai. Even though Beerus killed him, the Kais might have felt moved by his actions of trying to stand up to Beerus even though he knew he couldn't win, and so they decided to let him keep his body.
Actually... biology. Just like Saiyans, Earthlings and Namekians - most of the races in the universe cannot survive in vacuum of space regardless of their power level. Of course we have no information whether he was like Freeza or not, but considering the feat of surviving in space is a vary rare trait we can safely include this possibility. It could've been like with Namek, only Paikuhan didn't get to any ship and blew up with the planet after defeating some threat on a galactic scale that made the West Kaio let him keep his body... What about buu? There is no direct link between the two, but I do know that when bobbidy made buu, they terrorized the Galaxy and only bobbidy himself could trap boo. What if evil kid boo (before absorbing the supreme Kai) traveled to Pikkons planet and they both had a massive fight? It would easily explain his death, and buu would have been sealed up anyways as to not be seen later until dbz. This also explains the massive time gap and why Pikkon knew how powerful enemies could get, therefore training to the point where he could easily defeat cell and Freeza!

In all honesty, I think Pikkon could have just died of natural causes long, long before Goku or any of his main villains (including Freeza) even existed, but that doesn't explain why he keeps his body. Instead, I think there was a big baddy, possibly a Frost Demon or hell, maybe even Buu, that threatened his planet, so he defended his people, but they all died in the blast that destroyed his home world. This would be the thing that allowed him to keep his body. He then gets to meet the Kai of his galaxy, trains with him a bit, then disappears. Pikkon disappears so he can begin training because the Kai explains that if a major threat comes to his galaxy again, maybe even the same one that killed his whole race, so he trains on his own from the point where he completed his training with the Kai to the point where he meets Goku. Of course this means Pikkon has been training for millions of years, but it makes sense. An extinct species from millions of years ago in the DB universe would be on par with other species of the time, so Pikkon would have been strong for when he was alive, but by todays standards he's fairly weak, maybe Raditz levels or Saiyan Saga levels. Strong enough to be warranted the "strongest in the Galaxy", but also weak enough (including his genes, since Saiyans can get much stronger and surpass humans despite yeas of intense training) to need millions of years to close the gap. Of course, sadly, this means that Pikkon needs another million or so years (or maybe not, he could have found a training regimen that gets him stronger than whatever he's been doing in the past million or so years) to close the gap between him in the Other World Tournament and SSJB.
I was under the impression that either Buu or Broly killed him, depending on what you connect the anime continuity to. I think Buu makes the most sense, but that would imply Pikkon has been dead for quite some time.
The otherworld tournament happened right after the cell games. Also the broly movie happened right around the time of the cell games too because trunks had long hair after training in the hyperbolic Time chamber.
Sif 90 I don't think that's relevant really. Buu went through Kid/Bulk Kid/Fat stages before being sealed. Pikkon could've been killed by any three versions and the one he saw wasn't the same form. Even then, with as filler as filler could be, Pikkon probably just wasn't written or considered to have any relevance to the overall Kid Buu confrontation.
The only canon character who I could think of who could be powerful enough to kill him would be hit, as you may recall in that he is 1000 years old, which he could of done within those years, not only that, but someone would of wanted him dead, which could lead to more theories

I think frieza might be the one who kill him. Remember, frieza destroyed many planets a longggg time ago. So he must've destroyed pikkon's planet, and maybe pikkon died trying to protecting his planet, similar to bardock.
He could be a mutant Namekian or one of the species of Namekian that flead the world during the great cataclysm.

I always thought it would be hilarious if he was fodder, Dragon Ball tier and just was dead for a long time and trained to become OP. Is it too hard to believe? Most of the main heroes were fodder at one point and we meet a guy who was dead for an indeterminate time and we assume that he was always strong?

Two theories of mine regarding pikkon:
1st: He got killed by freeza or one of his ancestors
2nd: Pikkon is the same race as hit, thats why he is so strong now after all that years

This Would Be A Newer Answer Which Is Why Its Lower Than Bojacks, This Would Also Make Pikkon Over 50 Earth Years Old.
It Couldn't Have Been Moro Or Buu As That Would Mean He Would Have Meet A Saiyan Due To Their Civil War Between *Good* And *Evil*
In all honesty, I think Pikkon could have just died of natural causes long, long before Goku or any of his main villains (including Freeza) even existed, but that doesn't explain why he keeps his body.
Instead, I think there was a big baddy, possibly a Frost Demon or hell, maybe even Buu, that threatened his planet, so he defended his people, but they all died in the blast that destroyed his home world. This would be the thing that allowed him to keep his body. He then gets to meet the Kai of his galaxy, trains with him a bit, then disappears.
Pikkon disappears so he can begin training because the Kai explains that if a major threat comes to his galaxy again, maybe even the same one that killed his whole race, so he trains on his own from the point where he completed his training with the Kai to the point where he meets Goku.
Of course this means Pikkon has been training for millions of years, but it makes sense. An extinct species from millions of years ago in the DB universe would be on par with other species of the time, so Pikkon would have been strong for when he was alive, but by todays standards he's fairly weak, maybe Raditz levels or Saiyan Saga levels.
Strong enough to be warranted the "strongest in the Galaxy", but also weak enough (including his genes, since Saiyans can get much stronger and surpass humans despite yeas of intense training) to need millions of years to close the gap.
Of course, sadly, this means that Pikkon needs another million or so years (or maybe not, he could have found a training regimen that gets him stronger than whatever he's been doing in the past million or so years) to close the gap between him in the Other World Tournament and SSJB.

The otherworld tournament happened right after the cell games. Also the broly movie happened right around the time of the cell games too because trunks had long hair after training in the hyperbolic Time chamber.

Sif 90 I don't think that's relevant really. Buu went through Kid/Bulk Kid/Fat stages before being sealed. Pikkon could've been killed by any three versions and the one he saw wasn't the same form.
Even then, with as filler as filler could be, Pikkon probably just wasn't written or considered to have any relevance to the overall Kid Buu confrontation.

The only canon character who I could think of who could be powerful enough to kill him would be hit, as you may recall in that he is 1000 years old, which he could of done within those years, not only that, but someone would of wanted him dead, which could lead to more theories
