Hand wash in cold water and turned inside out is also a good option. I have a Fendi/Fila collab t-shirt that I do that with, and it looks brand new still. And dried flat. (Jan Griffiths).@@KickingItWithKadie

YES! Garment care is something we like to forget 😅
I used to be so scared of cashmere and wool because of the washing/dry cleaning costs. But since I’ve been able to hunt down those items either pre loved or at insanely discounted prices, I’ve learned to love them. I always wear a modal undershirt which helps keeping them clean for longer. I essentially only wash them once a year. Handwash before they get stored in moth proof bins, waiting for next year.
I’ve actually accumulated to much cashmere and silk blend knitwear I have a hard time deciding which one to wear, and I love it🤣

  • @ellenowlin
    @ellenowlin ปีที่แล้ว +11

with knitwear items if it’s a large percentage made of wool then you REALLY don’t need to wash it after every wear. wool is an oil-repelling fiber and that means our skin oils and such don’t stick into it and unless you wild and crazy it probably won’t become rancid smelling. the only times you would need to wash it would be if it was getting misshapen or like after a season of being stored away. coming from the knitting community i can tell you many people don’t wash their knit sweaters more than a couple times per season. it’s not gross, it’s literally the natural properties of wool that allow for this kind of low maintenance.

I like to buy luxury knitwear for the same reasons too! It also looks much better than those from fast fashion brands even they claimed that they were using 100% wool or cashmere.

    • @Skyebright1

Totally, in medieval times they’d wash their linen underclothes regularly but their woollen dresses and tunics would be helpfully low maintenance ;)

I started "dipping my toe" as Cassie would say in preloved designer items. I was against it until I realized that some rich ladies buy and wear once. I have mint condition Thom Browne and Gucci pieces for a fraction of the cost. Totally agree with these categories

I find outerwear, pants, knits are always preferable since they either don't need to be washed that much or are hardier in regards to the washing machine. A t-shirt is just too stressful.

I love hearing your take on this. You are so intelligent and insightful, and along with your gift of the gab and sense of humour this is why I follow you even though our styles are probably polar opposites . I tend to buy mostly mid range clothing (Toteme, Acne Studios, Isabel Marant, Max Mara, Anine Bing, Joseph etc) and also get my basics from them, but then I am a minimalist. recently I've gotten into some Loewe. I only keep shoes and bags high end designer. You shop the least of any influencer I know and I really love how you buy totally out there pieces and then show how they work for you (vlog with outfits again anytime soon?). I appreciate your thoughts!

I totally agree on designer jackets and coats!! As a Canadian where our chilly season is so SO long, good quality knitwear is a must. I have cashmere sweaters that I have had for over ten years! They don’t tend to hold odours and get softer over time. They do require a bit of maintenance (cleaning and shaving) but cost per wear is excellent if you take care of them ❤

Expensive clothes are actually a very good motivation to stay in narrow range of weight. At least it works for me. Cheap clothes can go easily in the trash or donation but my 150€ jean shorts are not going anywhere until I fit back in!

I love the whole premise of this video! Over the past few years that I've indulged in luxury fashion, I've only picked up 2 pieces of ready-to-wear. One I got on sale, but it feels too formal for my everyday (even though I love it). The other I can't get enough of when I'm not working! I should've probably known that I don't wear dresses often enough, but it was something I waited a whole year to buy

I’ve actually been thinking a lot about this after some of my luxury ready to wear lost buttons, started to break, etc. within a year of owning. I’ve actually found that contemporary brands sometimes have better quality for ready to wear. Clothes that are a bit more resilient. Unsure if contemporary is really classified as luxury - maybe not- but I’m all for quality.

i own a yarn company. you can handwash any sweater in COLD water and lie flat to dry. of course, it's up to you whether you want to do that, but you can and it isn't going to harm it. when i dye yarn, i literally cook it on the stove. the key here is COLD water. you don't want to felt your sweater, which happens when you let it get too hot and then immediately get it too cold (like, say, a hot wash cycle followed by a cold rinse cycle.) so hand wash in water as cold as your hands can a stand, roll the water out between a couple of towels, and shape the sweater to dry. this is a huge hassle and i understand why you might want to dry clean (or if you're me, just never wash your knits - i don't wash my handknits because they don't touch my body directly, i wear like a tank top or something). but anyway, that's what you can do if you want to save money.

We are in total agreement here Cassie! My theory is that if it’s substantial and hard wearing, I’m open to spending more. Things like shoes, leather, outerwear, denim - you always get your moneys worth. But if it’s direct on skin or too trendy, I always hesitate. (Doesn’t mean I say no, but you know how that goes 😂)

When it comes to wearing luxury knitwear, I always try to wear a simple Hanes shirt or even Under Armour to help prevent any sweating or anything like that getting into the sweater. It’s helped me with my cost-per-wear and keeping them cleaner longer.

I LOVE preloved RTW! I have some Hermes gems bought for a fraction of retail price. Granted I am not into the trendy stuff and mostly get Hermes wool jumpers or silk dresses/skirts. Plus, preloved allows you to get stuff that is not available in stores anymore. Now I’m on the hunt for some specific stuff from Phoebe Philo’s first collection at Celine and I know I will be able to find it 😊

This was a great topic to cover. I agree with all of your points. For me, majority of my RTW pieces are silks because I can pretty much wear them all year round. Glad that you mentioned preloved because a lot of my silks are preloved and the savings is astonishing. Don't splurge much on designer jeans, although Versace has a pair right not that's so me🙄...Paige, Mother, and Hudson are my go to. My black leather Balmain blazer is probably my favorite RTW piece I own, so worth it!🤗

as a HUGE fan of pre-loved designer clothing/bags/shoes, i have to share that i recently purchased a fendi zucca knit polo top at a local designer consignment boutique for probably 75% off the retail price. it's in excellent condition, truly would never have known it wasn't brand new. it definitely takes some time and dedication to find what you are looking for on pre-loved sites, but when you do it's absolutely worth it. love love love your videos cass! xx

  • @MonicaMolesag

Loved this! Very helpful and I find that your experiences are so aligned with mine. I think that we are going to see a huge surge in preloved over the next years due to sustainability (and costs!) so don't be afraid to delve into that. I live in Netherlands now which as you may know is a very progressive society where actually, buying new is frowned upon. It is all about vintage and preloved here and Im getting into it. Like with interior design, i think you can get a much more sophisticated look if you combine old and new. Exercises your styling muscles a whole lot more than going to a brand and buying everything that comes on the runway in the exact same way that it was styled then...

A very helpful topic for folks beginning a collection. One of my favorite luxuries is linen fabric, well worth the money and the comfort. I really encourage people, buy your perfect cut in linen slacks, shirts, skirts, and sheath dresses. Buy 3-4 of them. Our world is getting hotter and freshly starched linen is the thing to wear in it. I got really good at starch ironing, even as a broke student I had a collection of linen sheath dresses and I ironed them in my kitchen. Linen goes everywhere from work to dinner to a beach walk or a wedding in summer.

I haven't even been able to wear my Loewe anagram sweater yet. I moved to Oahu right after I bought it.

Honestly used to buy my jeans from primark until earlier this year! Cheap and they did the job! Until I bought some good American jeans on sale and I'm in love!!!

I got around 20 ready for wear and runway pieces, most bought well below retail . But coats and jackets and shoes are so worth it

Always great videos. Unfortunately quality has declined significantly in some of the major fashion houses I.e. chanel. They don’t make clothing like they used to however their prices keep going up and we keep buying. It’s more quantity over quality for some of the big fashion homes and that’s a shame.

Omg my Valentino jeans were a mistake purchase, do I wear them every week, yes because trying to rationalize the CPW, is the any stretch in them? Absolutely NOT! But when I wear them I get the compliments.
All my designer jackets/coal/and blazers are exceptional and definitely worth the investment.

I have found over the years that while I can’t afford designer clothes it does certainly pay to purchase the best quality items possible.
I have a couple of second hand stores that I love shopping at as their donations are better brands and keep their value.

As someone with a long torso / long arms and narrow feet who is 5’8” or 6 feet in heels, you just made me realize that if I could find basics cheaper perhaps RTW would be in reach. To find a “tall” top or AA shoes / narrow fitting work shoes generally means spending more. Please do point out items that fit long on torso or narrow on the foot. A lot of these items have no way to filter for online. And salespeople aren’t always aware enough to help to find this fit.

@@CassieThorpe We Understand. I liked them too.. but if they are to time consuming then cut back on doing them. The Shopping vlogs are the best. President's Day weekend is this coming weekend. Many stores, including Woodbury Common, will be having Sales starting this Thursday.
