So, now the next challenge will be harnessing the power to make the truck go faster. I already have some cal-tracs I need to install, but whats a good street/strip tire? I may do a small disc brake conversion out back so I can fit a proper 15" wheel with good tire options out back...
What headlights are those? Are they quality? I have some just like them but my bulbs don't quite fit right so I'm looking for s better pair to get for my 01 suburban. Thanks in advance.
I can't wait to see the step side with a good converter. That was the one thing that made me sad about red tide. Love the channel. Keep up the awesome work.
I like the fact you work like the average guy with jack and jack stands and laying on your back. That's how I do all the work on my vehicles I don't even have a garage🤣👌
Great Video LT! I met you a few weeks ago at the Corvette shop in San Diego with Larry Hofer. Thanks again for all the TH-cam tips. I picked 1000+ subscribers taking your advice on my channel. I appreciate it! Thanks Again. Greg Q
I was running a 2.8 liter V6 torque converter behind a 1998 7.4 carbed roller engind in my 88 4X4 siverado...worked good with the 3:42's and 35 inch tires.thanks for the vid
A torque converter stall speed matched to your engine combination is like adding the cherry on top of your icecream. Great to see it all worked out, good video to show how important it is and gets overlooked by many. Looking forward for the next one.
Awesome! This is an Awesome build. Love the alternative to the Ls and the build off. You have the best scenery btw. Every drive I get lost in the background!
Hey LT, excellent work! You inspire me to get something done on my project every day, even something minor. I'd like to vote to leave the Ugly Truck as it is to just have fun with. 547 into the AWD stepbside! Can you imagine AWD 95 mile an hour burn outs?
@@LawrenceTolman Agreed. Also if you plan to use this trans in the step side with awd you need to pull everything out of the trans to convert it for mating with a xfer case. I did that. Kinda wished I had just bought a 4x4 ready 4l80 in the first place.
CalTracs keep my tires from bouncing while spinning, but with street tires, I have zero traction hitting it in any gear but overdrive. Sticky tires are a must!
feels the same in my 1998 trans am ws6 i went with 3200-3500 boss hog torque converter part number APE-49454 on summit racing. works well im glad i went with a higher stall because you would be upset if you did all that work to only be a bit better than stock but traction is impossible to find with street tires now, good video i enjoy your progess builds.
Sounds like you've built the truck that General Motors didn't have the balls to build, because let's face it, the 454ss so called truck from hell was a noisy Turd that was slow. Technology and innovation has made incredible things possible.
so glad youtube recommended your channel, I loved all the stuff you did on power nation and am glad to see you still doing quality content here on this channel! liked and subbed! the only critique I can give you is to sort out your audio levels a little, the audio is a bit "peaky" and crunchy, maybe consider turning the gain down on your lapel just a smidge? otherwise keep up the great content, I will continue watching.
welcome back, and fair critique. I've been battling audio issues like that for a while now, I had a good mic and it took a dump, and after that, I haven't been able to find another one like it. tried different camera settings and everything, so I wonder if its the camera itself now... but I agree and am working on it
Dot drag radial then you could drive on the road or strip. 3200 yup a good traction is key 🔑. 13 pounds of boost that's quite a bit & sounds really nice. Good work & thank you for you videos!
You have defiantly motivated me to get back in the garage and tinker with the projects that were fine the way they sit but do things to make them better.
I was towing heavy with my cammed 6.0 2500hd. Yes I'm dumb but need to work to buy more parts lol. Burnt it up lost my 80e. Now I'm back on the stock converter (yuck ) and a high mile 80e lol. Circle d said send it out we will take care of it. I won't put it in without a tru cool 40k and an efan
a higher gear like 3.42 or 3.23 will help load the engine harder which helps the turbo spool quicker, plus it matches the lower RPM power the big block makes. I had 4.30s in there before, and it was just too much. it actually got faster with the 3.42
Good video as usual. That is a cool truck and that converter is a great mod There has been a trend recently of altered american flags; I don't care for any alternate flag, no matter the sentiment- only one American flag. Just my $.02
Great vidio! Love the stall speed, any more would have been a waste of time, money and fuel. Definitely some wider, and a softer compound tire for you! Not to wide, don't ruin the look. Awesome 👌job, great sleeper, for a while ! Can't wait to see how well the 540 + c.i. generator motor 😉 will work. Have fun. Happy Holidays ✌🏻👋🏻👍❄ 🤏⛄🇨🇦 😎.
I understand a budget build, but I would have put a high stall in it before I built the turbo kit. You will find the weak points in the driveline as soon as you get it to hook up.
For running on the street a smaller quicker spooling turbo would be more fun if you could keep the torque from breaking stuff. Precision 6266 would spool really quick.
Well we’re already over the threshold of traction with this turbo and converter combo, and while yes, a smaller turbo would spool quicker, it would also be more restrictive up top.
Are you going to drop ugly truck more? Caltracs are my next step as well for the rear. The channel is legit for sure. A small rear disk change to fit 15's is sweet. Love Mickey's but too much $... I run racemaster.
Arent you glad you did that hard launch from a dig when you did? 20:20 was smokey the bear. Im sure he wouldnt have been as excited as you with the ugly trucks performance!
After you bought the stepside I started thinking Ugly Truck being extended cab kinda ruins the performance style for me. I don't think I've seen a AWD 8.1 swapped standard cab. Still enjoy watching you do upgrades on UT though.
Good video! I thought with the circle D 4l80e converters you needed to run a 4l60e flex plate? Also did you have to change your idel on your tune? Did a stall on my 6.0 4l80e square body and my idel was not happy at all. Keep up the good work.
Flat 4l80e flexplate for the 4l80e, Dished 4l60e flexplate for a 4L60E unless it's a custom converter. Sometimes you need an adapter on the 4l80e unless they have the long crank.

Mickey Thompson ET SS tires seem to work well. Just a few month wait for them
I run a 315/50/17 MT et street r on 456 gears with a cammed lq9 single cab and still spins 1st but overall does really well
Looks like your making good progress on ugly truck. Can't wait to see the Dyno results on the 4.8
I run a 315 50 17 Mickey thompson et street r. Hooks my 600hp 670lbft, blown, cammed, 6.2l lt motor with a set of rough country traction bars.
What headlights are those? Are they quality? I have some just like them but my bulbs don't quite fit right so I'm looking for s better pair to get for my 01 suburban. Thanks in advance.
Im glad you didnt put the converter in a year ago. This has shown nicely each step of the modificatios abilities
Very underrated channel
I appreciate that!
Chris provides top notch customer service.
I can't wait to see the step side with a good converter. That was the one thing that made me sad about red tide. Love the channel. Keep up the awesome work.
Those mountains are beautiful! Reminds me of growing up in Colorado Springs 👍
Man this is ever just a cool truck
Man i dont know how you got the patience to remove and install transmissions without a lift like it’s nothin. Love the series so far
I like the fact you work like the average guy with jack and jack stands and laying on your back. That's how I do all the work on my vehicles I don't even have a garage🤣👌
I'm glad you got that Circle D converter in. Nice job! I hope to see you on the side of the road again sometime.
I'm closin' in on 60 and the body is no longer cooperating - my 10K 2 post lift is probably the best money I've ever spent!!!! :D
LT likes to do things the long way ( hard ). It's just to create content.
Benpak needs to send him a two poster.
Great Video LT! I met you a few weeks ago at the Corvette shop in San Diego with Larry Hofer. Thanks again for all the TH-cam tips. I picked 1000+ subscribers taking your advice on my channel. I appreciate it! Thanks Again. Greg Q
It was good to chat as well, and glad it helped your channel!
Your reaction to the new-found performance makes it worth all the effort...just something satisfying about a silly giggle from a fast truck or car😁😁😄😄
Thanks for everything
LT, can't wipe that smile off his face!!! Awesome burnout, yah treadless trurckin' again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait to have my motor together, already got a built motor and 2600 stall... I'm excited!
All this hard work paid off love watching it happen!!

Couldn't agree more! I makes the truck go from fun to insane fun that puts a smile on your face every time.
Looking good LT.
Finally transmission conclusion! Good job LT!
it took a minute to get here, but glad its all wrapped up
I’ve been enjoying each installment of your different projects! Great video LT!!
That grin from ear to ear said it all..😁😁👍👍👊
More than I thought of a change then I was thinking, flicking awesome. Smokem' if you gottem!
hell yeah brother!
Awesome! This is an Awesome build. Love the alternative to the Ls and the build off. You have the best scenery btw. Every drive I get lost in the background!
thanks! it's especially pretty now that theres a little snow on the ground.
The turbo setup looks slick dude.
Thanks! Took a lot of work, but I’m way happy with how it all worked out.
It looks like all that nice exhaust work you did made it easy to get it apart
it really does make life simple.
Oh yeah, it sounds dramatically different. Great improvement.
I admire this build
Nice setup on this one too. Man you have fun trucks.
This guy has a voice for voice overs. 😁 Entertaining to watch as well.
After the last track day you didn’t mention anything about a new converted. Good thing you read all of the comments.
Glad to see I'm not the only that uses just simple manual tools to do big jobs
LT. I love the converter you chose. Seems to really make a difference. Keep these videos coming.
Love the 8.1
Another awesome video LT
Thanks again!
Looks like things will just get better from here. Great video, can’t wait to see the next step!
Love the enthusiasm. Great job and a very cool build.

Great as always
I'm smilin 😊
happy times
I have been working on my nova and I got the same stall converter sitting on the self waiting for my chevy 2500
I'm excited to see this thing at the track once you can put the power to the ground!
me too!
Looks like redwood road alongside Utah lake.
I had the same converter in my 4l80 swap!
it totally transforms the driving of the truck, should've done it ages ago
@@LawrenceTolman Agreed. Also if you plan to use this trans in the step side with awd you need to pull everything out of the trans to convert it for mating with a xfer case. I did that. Kinda wished I had just bought a 4x4 ready 4l80 in the first place.
You should be able to soften the shifts with some tunning. My favorite part of the 4L80e was how much control you get in the tune.
You make it look easy. Great video
CalTracs keep my tires from bouncing while spinning, but with street tires, I have zero traction hitting it in any gear but overdrive.
Sticky tires are a must!
0-60 in one spot I love it
I knew it was going to be an especially good vid when I could literally hear you smiling when you talked at the beginning.
Good stuff LT

LT=master mechanic
thanks! appreciated
Awesome LT. I need to put one ☝️ n my truck. You have convinced me too lol
I put a 265mm converter in my '08 silverado and had to have a tuner tune for it cause the transmission didn't act right. After the tuning it did fine.
Love it man. This video is convincing me to swap to a 80e from my t56
I do enjoy shifting gears on my own, but with a big turbo setup an automatic with a good stall is a ton of fun.
@@LawrenceTolman that's the thing I have a precision 76mm just behind the cab. So it takes a bit to spool up between gears.
Def need a drag tire, grab some skinnys for track day.
Def get a trans brake for the track
Good work
You have defiantly motivated me to get back in the garage and tinker with the projects that were fine the way they sit but do things to make them better.
glad I could help!
Awesome 👍😎
Thanks ✌️
Great video!
Thank you sir! Might make more power with something else, might be faster with something else, but nothing cooler than a big block! 😎👍
I agree!
Good job

yup, cooler temperatures are critical in an automatic with a high stall.
Good work sir 👍🙏
thank you!
@@LawrenceTolman your welcome sir
Burnout to 95 MPH! Who isn't going to like that? Are you in Utah or Colorado? I really like your content.
I think that's the first 4l80/th400 I've ever seen with the inspection cover installed. LMAO
That's what that piece is! Lol
Need to get some 10 or 12 wide wheels with nitto 888r’s
Put a helmholtz chamber on the side exit for the 4.8
If you get sticky tires and some cal trac’s, you are gonna want to get a one piece drive shaft and a loop.
Smokin’
You said 342 gear in the rear? I’ll have to look for that video. Your the expert, but why not something higher? Thanks. I appreciate your channel.

Is the yellow plug supposed to be there on the filter or should of it been removed?
thats just the filter media inside the filter, not a plug
I understand a budget build, but I would have put a high stall in it before I built the turbo kit. You will find the weak points in the driveline as soon as you get it to hook up.
I think every 10th time this truck is upon jack stands, you get a free monster at the local convenience store. 🤣

You wont be able to make much power with a 62/66 on a 8.1 i have a 70/88 on a 5.3 700+whp maxed with a nice cam and race gas.
Are you going to drop ugly truck more? Caltracs are my next step as well for the rear. The channel is legit for sure. A small rear disk change to fit 15's is sweet. Love Mickey's but too much $... I run racemaster.
Yeah, it’s getting 2” lower out back with a flip kit
Well now we know why the pavement there on the west side of Utah lake keeps falling apart. 😉
This is exactly why the big motor needs to go into the AWD truck
We made a pit with rebar and concrete
Arent you glad you did that hard launch from a dig when you did? 20:20 was smokey the bear. Im sure he wouldnt have been as excited as you with the ugly trucks performance!
yeah, they don't seem to enjoy these shenanigans as much as I do...

We have to get LT some subs so he can get up off that floor! Lift for LT!!
I agree lol...
Where did you get that flex section on your wastegate, I need two of those and can’t find them. My budget setup needs some refinements
I believe that was from vibrant performance. It was the smooth internal type
@@LawrenceTolman found them thanks! Spendy buggers at 60$ a piece.
Looks like that thing is making some power. I wish I knew how much on 13 psi

How many clicks did you're converter go in mine only went in 2 clicks and dosent seem to want to go another one just curious
How much did the turbo kit cost you with out the turbo
What if I wanted to do a 8.1 turbo in the 88-98c1500
Go Vortec or old school stroker bbc?
