Found this video and followed instructions (was stuck trying to remove winder from case)... very informative and helpful...now have a working toy which is nearly as old as me! Thank you for taking the time to upload this.
Thank you very much indeed for your helpful video. I had a fisher price record player for my children in the 1970’s and as a result of your video and a few hours work, their children will now get to play with one rescued from a friend’s basement!
Thank you! It was taking me forever to figure out how to get the cover off after unscrewing those screws! Gentle with the brittle, aged plastic did the trick :) It now works just like I remembered.
We managed to get it apart. Sprayed with WD-40. But, it would play for a second or two and then stop. Took off turntable and cleaned. No change. Decided to spray the needle area. That did the trick. Works like a charm.
I had that toy when I was a child, i remember mid 70s´s lot of fun with it, always Fisher Price. My fav records was 3,4 and 5. Congratulations.... lot of memories.
I had one of these as a kid back in the 1980s. Always wondered if it had some kind of diaphragm to amplify the sound, as it was pretty loud to just be coming from the tiny comb on the tonearm!
I happened to have the strebito 142 piece set bought on Amazon. Used the 4.5mm socket. A little bit of pressure and fit perfectly. and, comes with plastic spudger tools to carefully take case off.
This was perfect as I couldn't see a way to easy it away from the wind up knob. There was a large bit hair fluff n hair stuck between the turn table and cog preventing it from turning 👍🏻👍🏻
I took mine all apart hoping I might be able to fix the crank mechanism. It popped and I knew that was a bad sign. I could drill out the rivets but I don’t think there’s any fixing it…
If you don't have a slot head screw, then the socket you need is a long and skinny 3/16" nut driver. The "WIHA" brand 3/16" nut driver on amazon works and is pretty cheap.
Took mine apart. Oiled the parts and cleaned the turntable area.It was over wound but the turntable does not start turning. I can manually turn the turn table but it does not play. Any ideas ? Should I oil the needle?
Hmm, sounds like the ratchet part of the mechanism is slipping. Were there any small plastic parts lose in the base of the player when you took it apart?
FixItWorkshop Worthing the plastic gear is missing all the teeth. It is so small, not sure what to use to rebuild them so it will catch. I tried clay, because I had that on hand. Didn’t work after drying. Going to think on it a day or so, unless you have a suggestion. Thank you!
I've got one of the newer 'retro' models with the same issue. The tension in the wind up mechanism slips the music part out of its seating causing the spool to release in one go. I'm guessing there's no fix for it. I might contact FP directly and hope for a spare part.
I had this toy in the 80's it worked beautifully but I think my mom sold it. Today my sister found one for my children. But sadly it stopped working. I found that today's toy uses batteries and the actual discs don't really play, I wish I had the classic one, it's much much better.
Need to do this to my wife's old one. I too have hex screws. However, WD40 should not be used on the winding mechanism, it's a water displacer and will wash out any grease that is already in there. A graphite powder would be a better lube as it doesn't attract dirt.
Hi, can you be more specific? Some toys have tamper proof screws, some have cross head... You have to gently lever the casing over the wind-up knob, once the four back screws are removed.
Thank you for this video! Question - I used WD40 but I only get like 45 seconds of music if I spin it 4 half spins. Should I use a different lubricant? Also have 3 in 1 oil handy. Also interestingly when it slows down, if you gently back spin it keeps playing to release the pressure. Does it make sense to lube the needle? Or can that screw it up.
Soo my kid loves hers.. my mom got it for her.. but it uses batteries.. she over wound it and now its messed up.. she keeps forcing me to fix her box but i don't know how... helps!!
"Flat blade screw, so remove those" - that's where I'm stuck. It doesn't look like any screw driver with a recognizable groove to screw. It's flat and round. Guess my next step will be finding out wtf a flat blade screwdriver is. Thanks. One step closer!
Happy for you to contact me through the blog page (fixitworkshopblog.wordpress.com) and send a photo over of your record player, perhaps I can identify it from a photo?

:( mine is held together by 4 hexagonal head screws. Does anyone have an idea what size bit I need to unscrew them?
I was lucky and had the four screws. Took it apart as you showed and cleaned it. Now it plays nice & loud with no skips. Thanks for the video.

Excellent clear video. And yes, ours was fixed too.

Yes, the music box mechanism (in the 'needle') has a brass rod up the stem, resting on a white rubbery diaphragm.

Thank you, in this video, the screws are not the same as mine. I have the 6-point hexagon type. Mine needs a good service as well.

Thanks. I seem to have hex nuts rather than flat blade screws...will try out soon...thanks for the instructions!
Glad it helped!
Hex nuts may be what I have too. Thanks!
any idea what size hex bit you need to unscrew? I have hex screws too
Comment faire quand il tourne au ralenti remontoir a fond? Peut-on y remédié svp?
Thanks for the servicing tips mate!
What would you suggest i do if the motor is working fine, but sound isnt playing. It was before it got sent to me? Thanks
I'd have a look at the link between the arm and speaker.
@@Matt_Marchant_fixitworkshop thank you so much.. not sure what that means but will watch your video again and try and figure it out lol

Don't oil the needle. Maybe try the brake mechanism, which might be stuck?
FixItWorkshop Worthing where is the brake mechanism located? Thanks for your help.
Saved my day! Helpful! Thanks a lot.
Any thoughts on once wound up, it just spins super fast and does not play at all? I took apart but it will not play slow.

ZowieFawn I'd try finding a 'spares or repair' one on eBay...
FixItWorkshop Worthing I’m actually having the same issue.i found one at a local thrift shop

I can’t get mine to turn at all do you do repairs? Thanks!!
any idea where to get a replacement for the music box
EBay is probably your best bet, but of of go to thrift stores you'll get lucky sooner or later.
Hey mate what’s the best thing to do if it’s been wound up too much?
Hi! Open it up and dismantle the mech... carefully!

i had one of those in the '60s. one of the tunes was 'Funiculi Funicula'

Nathen Fredrick do your recommend a brand or name I can easily google/amazon
@@medicwheat69 just whatever is cheap. I don't know of any specific brands.
3 in 1 or any other light machine oil is ideal for this application.
What size tool takes back off? My husband can't find one that will fit

SUPER helpful! Thanks!!
Thanks a lot! It felt safer to do it with you and it's a success ;-)
Glad it helped. Always nice to receive feedback.
I still have mine but the switch is locked on it and will not unlock to let play can you help get it back working please
No problem, please get in touch at fixitworkshop.co.uk
Its a 4 star i think but its an odd size or very hard to reach. My husband has tried several sizes

Sounds like its moving too fast. I used a plastic friendly PTFE lube
Thank you so much!
thank you
it helped me !

If you have hex screws in there, this is the exact tool you need: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O5ILUM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
the one you need is called a WTF driver
I’m in the same boat- here’s a pic of the screw (bolt? ) please help if anyone figured out what tool to use!
I had that as well
Where is the brake mechanism located? It does play if I turn the record.
Gratos recuerdos
these days mybe someone will 3d printed those records but I know it will be copyrighted on those records too
I had one of these. I used to run my fingers across the star wheels just for amusement.
Jeez...I thought restoring gramophones was a bit weird
