Kofu is a regional city in Japan surrounded by mountain ranges. Ventforet is a small football club that was established in a region that had not been associated with professional sports for many years. Because their home stadium is small, the ACL will be held at the National Stadium.
For many years, the club was in J2, occasionally being promoted to J1, but always being relegated soon after. Last year, Ventforet miraculously won the Emperor's Cup, defeating a number of strong clubs to earn the right to challenge for the ACL.
The club's breakthrough has given fans of smaller clubs in Japan much hope.
