Blend it out starting with 80 grit on your repair spot and then 220 and then 320 scotch brite. Use sunshield with Mek after you spray your spot with straight gel coat and a little bit of mek and then come back and spray the spot with 1/3 gel coat and the rest sunshield and remember to slowly blend it out each stage, and you should never hit the tape line. After the sunshield Is sprayed blend it further out with 2 coats of straight sunshield and always fold your tape back so you don’t make a hard line. Ps.this is only if you want it to look like it was never even broken in the first place. Your demonstration is really good for the “do it yourself”kinda guys
Hey bud, that was pretty awesome. I’m looking to do a area that’s not necessarily as bad as this was, it’s more or less seems like the previous owner had color signed a little too much and you can see the silver the red is not as good as Rest so I’m looking to do something like this. Can I use this technique in a larger area approximately 2’ x 2’ and this split spray on gelcoat do you have everything in the description? Thank you for your video
It was the tape and to much red flake as you can see it was a square shape. It would have been better with a puffer bottle and no tape. But it got the job done.
You dont really need the tape for the color part. The flec should be blended into the surrounding areas just like paint would be. You would just need to go lighter on flec away from the damage.
I feel like you could've lightly sanded the corners to help blend in that square that was left from the tape.... I realize most would not see it but it sticks out if you know what to look for, and it would've only been an extra step or two... still good video and thanks for the info.
Doesn’t matter in terms of what to use or how to do it. I wouldn’t have taped it off to blend in the clear and metal flake but the instructional part of this video is great. The filler and the clear coat part.
Just purchased gel clear from Fibere Glast with MEKP, the company recommended a Duratec Fibre Glast Clear Hi Gloss Gel coat Additive for open Air Cure.. Should I use with the same steps following Metalflake Repair No Tools?
I have answers to all of these questions. It really is odd he hasn't replied. You need to use fine line tape on the stripes ,spray them on after flake, then clear it all together. Do NOT use tape on the edge.DO use masking paper. If you NEED to use a tape edge ,lift the tape edge up to avoid a hard tape edge. Subscribe to my channel to get responses. Lol
what is the proper way to do it? I have a skeeter I just bought with an area taken out like this but it's a little bigger. I didn't know it could be fixed somewhat simply and I'm down to try it
Trust me when I say this... Vanna White has more going on than her hands. And, you don't have those features, if you know what I'm saying.... Good video tho. I really I appreciate watching a pro show an amateur how to do these things.
Is there a base coat used first before flake? I was told by ranger that my boat had a black base coat do i need to do the base first,If so should it be a non wax?
Good video except for one BIG thing: You didn't go into exact detail of what chemicals combine in your sprayer (and at what proportions) to make your clear coat. I don't know what to buy in order to follow your video!!! Do you have to make more than one batch since the first might harden before it's used? Please expand on the chemicals.
Yea that part kinda pissed me off.. just brushed over the most important part thats unlike any other clear coat ever.. put in some clear, some of the hardener and what?? Then the fucker says put wax in the final coat??? The hell he talkin about? All ive seen as far as boat paint is a clear gel coat that comes in a friggn can... and who knew youd add hardener to a clear coat? Is he just spraying the fiberglass resin thinned out on it? And wax? Like candle or turtle? Like everybody knows all about this watching a how to video.. bullmess is what it is.. fuckery..
Z Ack it’s called wax in styrene. It stops the clear staying tacky. When you have gelcoat exposed to the air, it stays tacky. It is designed to be applied to a mould, therefore the finished surface is not exposed to the air.
You really need to get the dry flake sprayer . You add a little clear gelcoat and spray the dry spray flake over just that area no mess to deal with at all . At 10:34 after you removed the tape you should have went over it again with the acetone to get rid of the glue that's on the tape that transfer to the pained area you can not put to much acetone to . . th-cam.com/video/YmE-kCQLjvM/w-d-xo.html
All I can say is don't waste your time doing it this way!!! That sprayer is garbage for spraying gel coat unless you thin it beyond what the gel coat is supposed to be!! All around bad information which your going to have a bad result!!!!

Totally made it look easy. Thanks. Gonna have to reference. Your video couple times to get it right. Thanks again

Uhhhh..the repair is noticeable! Thanks for the vid,but if that was my boat,I would be pissed in a big way.
Uhhhh... yessir yessir 3 bags full
Thank you for your hand model skills
Real deal stuff right here!
Dude thank you... I've been looking for just this info. I'll look into a puffer to aid in applying the flake.
He talked about the additives he used for the 1,2,3 coats on the final steps - what are they? Any links for em?
Can u guys added a list of the tools u guys used to spary the clear on with and the other tools or parts list
Hey Justin you mentioned where to get the filler but where do you get the clear coat and what mixes in it to make that spray contraption you had?
Clear gelcoat. You can mix acetone to thin but styrene is best results.
Geez. Thank god I have an aluminum boat. Lol
Could i ask what do you mixed in that gel coat. because i cant find the materials you mentioned in Canada. Thank you.
You want peroxide hardener and styrene for thinning.
The Bob Ross of Fiberglass boats.
You need to make a stress crack repair video! Nice work.
Aaron Stahley indeed
Stress crack is the same.use a dremel to grind the crack out.
great work. what caused the vertical and horizontal lines in the repair?
the tape
It was the tape and to much red flake as you can see it was a square shape. It would have been better with a puffer bottle and no tape. But it got the job done.

What about the adhesive from the tape thats still on the boat after you pulled the tape. You sprayed gel right on top of the adhesive!!!
Good video!! Love you man!! Eye 👁 of the tiger!!
What’s a good brand of clear gel coat you recommend?
Legnos
What brand of gel coat is good to re-do my bass boat and where I can get it from?
Did you continue to sand the bigger area either 400 grit?
I feel like you could've lightly sanded the corners to help blend in that square that was left from the tape.... I realize most would not see it but it sticks out if you know what to look for, and it would've only been an extra step or two... still good video and thanks for the info.
How long did each step take to dry?
Can you tell me what you used in the prevalence sprayer
Do you have a materials list, so I don’t look like an idiot going into the parts store and don’t know what to ask for? Thanks
How did it hold up?
Never make a hard line..
It looks too obvious.
Doesn’t matter in terms of what to use or how to do it. I wouldn’t have taped it off to blend in the clear and metal flake but the instructional part of this video is great. The filler and the clear coat part.
He didn't paint up to the edge anyway so there won't be a hard line
How do you find out the color of medal flake on a older boat.
What is the brand of clear coat you used?
Just purchased gel clear from Fibere Glast with MEKP, the company recommended a Duratec Fibre Glast Clear Hi Gloss Gel coat Additive for open Air Cure.. Should I use with the same steps following Metalflake Repair No Tools?
Yes
What would it cost to do my 518 it looks good but got some dock damaged
thankyou for doing this video it was very helpful;;;;;;;;;;
Whats the purpose of wax active
How would you do this if the damage area butts up against pin stripes of a different color?
He hates his viewers apparently

I have a boat with blue metal flake where just the gelcoat is flaking off. What would be the best way to fix that? I have ALOT of areas to fix.
Newer boat
What were you using for clear coat?? I missed it. Lol
Like the new lead in
Thank you!
Nice work thanks for video
Not sure if you mixed enough filler to do the entire spot
If you sand wider and feather your layers wider instead of the hard line you could have blended it better but great video none the less
How would you do feather lines?
Do you know how the pain is done on a 1997 stratos 290
How can you tell if you wet sanded threw the gel coat
Would all the flake be silver
@mike h so I might have silver flake mixed in with the red flake or a little over spray
Yes busted flake is silver
I think that hard line we saw is why we did not see a finished job??
just a tip from a proffesional....Never grind or paint near tapes or u will have that Γ sign always.Nice work but u can do it more proffesional.
what is the proper way to do it? I have a skeeter I just bought with an area taken out like this but it's a little bigger. I didn't know it could be fixed somewhat simply and I'm down to try it
Periklhs V I saw that he left that shape behind from the tape
Where did you get that spray bottle
Home depot has them
I've gone to orioles, couldn't find the sprayer
Your the man good work
True American Badass!👍🏻
We try!
So the square will always been seen? Why didn't u finish so we could see the end result?
Trust me when I say this...
Vanna White has more going on than her hands. And, you don't have those features, if you know what I'm saying....

Great video. Terrible at replying to comments
Ed, how did your repair go? I have a 2007 z20 ranger Comanche that I'm going to try to repair.
Only air dry wax on the very last coat of clear when done
Wait you didnt show the finish after polishing?
Good video except for one BIG thing: You didn't go into exact detail of what chemicals combine in your sprayer (and at what proportions) to make your clear coat. If you roll the edges on the masking tape you won't have those sharp lines in the finished product. Metal flake is hard to get right though.
USE 3M high strength marine repair putty.
How did you hide those hard lines in the finishing stage then...? They show up clear as day.
A sticker, they hold on better than glue
You said it was two parts so would that be 50/50 or what?
Not at all.
Did I miss something? I didn't see the end result.

Keep the mask far away from repair area to prevent hard lines Wich are visible
🙈 You can still notice there was a repair made.
11:52 Halfin
Just look at those sanding swirls and the taped blocks of repair…………..
All I can say is don't waste your time doing it this way!!! That sprayer is garbage for spraying gel coat unless you thin it beyond what the gel coat is supposed to be!! All around bad information which your going to have a bad result!!!!
U r correct. The sprayer works, though. Take that filter on the end of the straw off. Use styrene to thin.
Lol. So now you see a red square where the repair was done.
ya whats up with that
Not gonna lie, I would have just used red nail polish 😂
Really 😂
Where's the finished repair?
All that and you don't show us the end result?
Lame.
Sorry that came out really fucked up
That looks like trash see all the body work
Looks like SHIT, get your money back dude 🤣🤣🤣
What are the ratios you used for the Preval sprayer?
