My mom loved the Bratz dolls because of the inclusion and because Sasha was so EXPLICITLY Black. Also, the way that grown adults sexualize little girls is actually insane. I had a hormone disorder that made me go through puberty very young, and I still have moments of anxiety over how my body/appearance is being perceived
Yes my mum loved Bratz too and was super supportive of me having them and she bought me so many dolls, the main reason was also the representation with different skin colours, hair colours and they were perfect for the modern era over barbie who was at the time not at all inclusive and conservative
honestly the reason why i love a lot of girls media like bratz, winx, w.i.t.c.h etc is because of its focus on fashion with the absence of the male gaze. like it’s okay for these teen girls to wear “showy” outfits without worrying about what adults or boys would think. ❤️ also the live action bratz movie is iconic by itself but the casting and characters were all off. like having yasmin who’s a latina being played by a spanish girl, sasha being light-skinned and mixed when she’s dark-skinned, jade being half-white, cloe……. don’t even get me started on dylan and his entire character lmao. and sasha is the ONLY GIRL WHO DOESNT GET A LOVE INTEREST?? the movie is cute but i got beef with it. ALSO i would love if you took a look at the 2D projects and the art direction they take. starrin’ and stylin’ is more lowkey and grounded than these but it’s still cute, and i love the music. and the bratz babyz movie straight up looks like totally spies, child me was obsessed with the mall.
Wasn’t Yasmin supposed to be Middle Eastern? I heard that because the creator Isaac Larian is Iranian-Jewish himself, he wanted representation for his daughter so he intended for her to be Iranian. Either way the way she was presented in the live action was completely incorrect.
@@maria-212 so from what i’ve seen yasmin doesn’t actually have an official ethnicity. ur right about her being based off isaac larian’s daughter, but the designer carter bryant described her as hispanic and her original name was going to be “lupe.” to be fair, she could be both, and i guess that explains why she calls her grandma “bubbe” in the movie. my point still stands but that’s my bad for not knowing that
the parents who were worried about bratz being 'too sexual' were the same parents who grew up with tv shows that went "ooooooo" everytime 2 kids kissed. get real.
I immediately thought of boy meets world. Like that scene where Topanga (who was like 10 max in the scene) shows off a bathing suit and an “oooo” sound plays. Like wtf that is a child
Bratz captured the chaos of how me and my cousins played dolls/pretend teenagers as kids but it’s even funnier because it’s not even entirely intentional
being sexualized as a child by the people who are supposed to be protecting you is a different type of confusing and hurtful. i was so confused when all the sudden i was getting yelled at for wearing the same clothes i had been wearing for years. it made me hate my body because it was seen as inappropriate just because i had started growing boobs (i was 11).
exactly! it's soooo so confusing and disorienting! all of a sudden ppl make you feel like you're constantly guilty of something when you're just existing
Literally! I remember one time before I started wearing bras (i think I was also around 11 or 10) that I was helping clean out my aunt and uncles storage unit and it was super hot, so I took off the sweater I was wearing over my tank top. I was told to put it back on because I wasn't wearing a bra and I was "showing" stuff.
as a fashion designer i absolutely hate the fashion industry for sexualizing fashion i hate having to go through periods of high anxiety where i can't wear cute clothes because i'm scared of being sexualized and you addressed that perfectly in the beginning, i wasn't expecting to go into this video and get a serious conversation out of it but girls are constantly being sexualized for no fucking reason and bratz are an amazing example of this and they're literally not even real (even plastic gets sexualized when it looks feminine) what a world we live in 🙃
same ): i’ve loved fashion my whole life for ME, but i get harassed every time i leave the house. i was stalked for months outside of my college to the point where i don’t even exit the building for more than 30 seconds anymore bc they would come out of the darkness and sneak up on me within the minute i walked outside. i’m scared to even wear skirts anymore in case my uber drivers decide to touch themselves again even tho i’m entirely covered. even after so much of that trauma i was wearing a huge sweatshirt and cargo pants, completely covered up, and i was still harassed and sexualized. i am SO TIRED of having to be in fear of leaving the house in general just because people can’t help but sexualize us. i want to live in a city that only has other pretty girls that love cute clothes so we can all be at peace for once.
@@ellaizcool thank you for sharing, i know that probably a lot of women experience the same things on a daily basis and it sucks cause it feels like there is no real solution and a utopia where we can all exist and not be harassed for existing sounds amazing but is unfortunately unrealistic and i think all we can really do is keep talking about it until we annoy the shit out of everyone and they stop sexualizing women for no reason
Yes yes yes I'm constantly scared that if I wear this or that I'm gonna be catcalled, so a lot of very pretty clothes just stay in my wardrobe fo ages without being worn T~T
Its scary how universal it is for so many women to look back and realise how much sexualisation and cat calling happened aged 9 to 15. I also shared in that experience and it gave me so much anxiety.
I know it's a random aside, but I absolutely share your hatred of food fights. It's something I've only ever seen in US media, and it's just... so upsetting to me, like... someone hands you food, and you throw it on the floor? And everyone's throwing whole piles of food? Aside from that, it just makes me cringe because it's so disgusting! The idea of having food all over you... sensory hell. I would legit hide my eyes during those scenes as a kid.
As common as it is in teen or preteen media, food fights are VERY rare (I've never witnessed one ever throughout my time in grade school). There's nothing appealing ab going to class with food all over your body or ruining your clothes cause of ketchup...
I always found it so weird how there’s tons of food fights in US media surrounding school. I never had one and have never heard of one happening, I’m not sure why it’s such a trope because it really never happens..
I expected a food fight when I started high school (even when I didn't even like them), the bafflement I had when I realized there was none in all my school years (obligatory and post obligatory) was tremendous... Anyways, this trope is a waste of time (ours and for the episodes'), good food and just an easy excuse for a "plot development"
Man I know at both of the high schools I attended they had food fights. I was so mad when my lunch got taken from me lmao. Went hungry the rest of the day
You ate with that first section I literally stood up out my chair when you started getting into the race thing because so many people don’t realize that aspect and I’ve always felt that was what was going on
I didn't realize parents thought bratz dolls were inappropriate when I was younger that was the only dolls they bought me cause they had my features (almond eyes/pouty lips) its so gross how other adults was sexualizing regular features on these dolls...
oh OW as a latina w big lips, almond eyes, and wide hips who hit puberty at 10 your experience as a child hit me sooooo hard i’m like laughing in an effort to dissociate ahaaaaa excited to listen to the rest of this in my cubicle at my adult job 💅🏼
I appreciate an impartial view on Bratz because that was my obsession. I had so many Yasmin dolls because she “looked like me,” but Roxxi and Jade were my favorites.
I loved Jade even though I'm a black girl LOL my parents refused to buy me any doll that wasn't black though so I only had Sasha. Chloe was my second favorite I loved how dramatic she was Iconic.
Thank you for bringing this up because I hate the "forceful" enjoyment of stuff because of how we look rather than relatability, in Winx my fav was Flora and Musa, My fav Disney princess are Rapunzel, Merida, and Mulan in that order. I don't relate to Princess Tiana, my fav from that movie is literally Lottie because was just more relatable to me. Literally in Bratz Jade and Chloe are my fav.Like even in monster high my fav was always Draculaura and Cleo
Also, the Bratz website was AMAZING!! It had all the characters(Fianna, Nevra, Felicia and so on) with their favorite number, music, favorite color and nickname. Also, all the albums with the name of the songs and much more. So much personality I used to write all of it in my Bratz journal I was obsessed! I remember Yasmin loved Black Eyed Peas so I started to love Black Eyed Peas. My whole childhood and personality was these girls ♥️
As a Guatemalan trans man who grew up as a "girl" in a very white family (adopted when i was a baby) and constantly had white family members either being blatantly racist around or even towards me or making comments about how "spicy and hot" i had to be or like. Referring to my dancing as sexy when i was literally 11 and just enjoying myself at a family party. This shit hits a little too close to home ngl
Yeah, that happens too. Or when an adult likes a kids show and people say that they're most likely a p*do because they "pretend" to like a kids show Also I'm transmasc too
Hearing about the 13 yr old Tahitian "wife" was upsetting, I had to look up what happened to her. Was glad to read after that creep left Tahiti she remarried someone closer to her age, had 2 sons and seems to have moved on with her life without giving a crap about Gauguin. She got to live a little over 2 decades free of him before the Spanish flu got her. Gauguin even returned 2 years after leaving and tried to get back with her, then already remarried, to which she pretty much went "ew no", which just warms my heart to imagine. Also, extra props for the "loading... it takes time to look this good" Easter egg. That was such a fun detail from the Bratz website. Going to that website was my first internet experience, right before Googling anime characters. And those silver pants are so y2k and the perfect Bratz combo with the chunky pumps. The backlash at Bratz was so superficial. I do get why people got that knee-jerk reaction, it's the lips and the heavy eyeshadow and the assumptions you make of that, but that's all it was, assumptions. The first batch of Bratz outfits were actually really modest with lots of long sleeves/bottoms and layers, and the ethos which was really wholesome was completely ignored. It's like people that want to cancel a podcast or ban a book/movie without ever actually watching it, just going on what other people say. Also want to say how amazing you are for absolutely slaying in making these video essays in a second language. Learning another language is hard enough much less succeeding in becoming a content creator in that language. It's also a nice to hear commentary about these childhood IPs from another non-American.
A Bratz analysis is a real big coincidence ahah I went to a anime/comic con event last weekend, in there I've found a group of 4 gals dressed as Bratz. They looked really cool, i really liked their outfits (especially the shoes), so I asked if i could take a picture and save it as a future outfit/clothing style ref and they were really happy. I went back to the group of my male friends who i was a the con and they, no joke, said ''Who were they cosplaying, hookers?'', to say i was without words is... i dunno man
IDK if anyone has already said it, but the only thing I would add to this magnificent deep dive, it's that I believe literally the villains of the show were not only meant to be representing Barbie, but also the 'Bimbo' aesthetic, which we all may love/like right now, but back in the day, we know it was literally an insult and something really awful for girls to be inspiring of. I totally relate small dogs with Paris Hilton and we all know how even though she has always being iconic, she was hella ridiculized all over the media back then. / sorry if bad english lol
yeah I think you're right to an extent, I think it's kind of a thing that they were not 100% in on, bc technically Bratz wear things that were considered "bimbo" back then, while they also made these characters that were ridiculed for it... I think the reason for it is the fact that there were so many people creating this franchise that some things contradict each other
No, you expressed yourself perfectly. My only note is that it's "ridiculed" if you wanna be proper, but I will be saying ridiculized from now on anyway
Kinda same here too, I was poor as a kid so any dolls I had were like gifts and maybe some nice ones at second hand stores, and I never knew there was an outrage for these Bratz dolls tbh 😅 Although I only had a few, I think I liked them better than like barbie doll ones because they could stand upright a bit better cause they had separated feet/footwear, so it had a bigger flat surface to stand on
I always took Burdine's initial 31 as a lie as well, like that was her go to younger age and then decreased it even more for the dating site. Having her be around the same age as Byron just made more sense to me
standing fucking ovation for that entire first segment! As an afab person, I could never really put into words why I felt so anxious/afraid all the time as a child but you fucking hit the nail on the head! the sexualization and victim-blaming that afab children, especially poc afab children, are accustomed to on a regular basis is absolutely insane! Btw I also wanted to add that, in the letter that that disgusting ahh painter wrote, he mentioned how she was looking at him like those 'demons that her people were afraid of' (paraphrased) and that particular point really reminded me of how Christian missionaries look at the cultures that they're colonizing in the name of "spreading the gospel"- because legit the amount of times I've heard people at my family's church (I don't believe anymore) talk about how people of other religions are apparently traumatized and scared all the time because of their beliefs is fucking nuts (and ironic considering so much of Christianity is being afraid of both the devil and God 😭). Like they paint these religions as being barbaric when its Christians that historically waged wars, murdered, looted, and erased the stories and culture of so many places. Sorry, I went on for quite a bit there, but I think it really just goes on to show more of how this sense of 'primitiveness' is projected upon indigenous cultures.
Did anyone else have the experience where they were told they were too old for Bratz despite being you know… a child? Like I remember being told at 11-12 that I was already too old for the movies and dolls, and then when monster high came out the only way I could get away with watching or knowing stuff was cause I had a younger sister who was the “appropriate” age, like I was still a kid, I was younger than 18? And then flash forward to now where people my age are coming out as monster high/bratz fans I’m like “so I wasn’t too old!? Why was I made to feel bad about it?!”
We need to talk about the music, they're all bops! Space Angelz legit catch the Y2K feeling, "Keep It Up" is MOTHER and "Nobody's Girl" is legit timeless, so good and never gets old! Just love your videos and the points you make, we need you in the doll community!
I genuinely CANNOT believe that they created such great music SO consistently, it's genuinely a hit on top of a hit, on top of a hit! and thank you sm🥰🥰
Thank you, Lisa...I HEARD about the painting, "Spirit of the Dead Watching" but... Your videos are always amazing. You really paid attention in art class. I learned so much... ----- Random comment: Your words about being sexualized as a child made me cry. I kind of know what you went through. I wanted to hug you when I heard your story. 😢 I went to a regular public school and I remember grownups always made me feel embarrassed. I was TALL. Tall was bad. I started my period very early (ten) and my hips came in too quickly. I wore very tight sports bras and biker shorts under my clothes to keep everything in place. My teachers still complained whenever we had to run. I was always pulled aside to sit down. I always got check marks. Kind of a C grade. (elementary school, we had plus, checks, or negatives.) My mom didn't want me to wear dresses, skirts, shorts... Even pants. I couldn't win. In church, the Sunday school teacher would direct certain scriptures at me and I was the type of kid who looked down at my feet when I spoke. In middle school, a security guard (?) approached me in the middle of class to tell me my v-neck shirt was inappropriate. I had at least three safety pins on that shirt. -.- I was given a SEE THROUGH yellow shirt to wear. I cried and I was sent to the office. Then in highschool, the principal sent one of my friends to see if I was wearing shorts under my skirt that went a little PAST my knees. 🤦 Other girls wore their skirts were shorter than mine but my skirt was the issue. I still don't know why I was treated like a skank. Teenagers have hips. Women have hips. Even girls have hips. It's not a crime. People are just mean.
thats the thing, they treat you as if you've done something wrong, as if you've broken some rules or laws, as if you offended them PERSONALLY by just EXISTING. it genuinely pisses me off so much.
Maybe it’s because many men want to be attracted to females on their own terms, not to children or in professional circumstances, and rather than control their behavior or deal with the fact they have pedophilic feelings, they blame the girls for “tempting” them, and try to overly control their bodies. It may also be an expression of power and control, as a “I want to control what is seen of your body”. Many girls report older men flirting with them before they really hit puberty, so I think men being attracted to young girls is somewhat common, and as its a crime, they blame girls for their temptations. It’s really backwards and doesn’t place blame where it’s due, and it forces sexuality and the idea of their bodies as sexual objects to girls not ready to explore it.
As a big bratz fan and someone who had a doll, I can confirm it dud not make me more sexual. All it did has develop my love for fashion in a future fashion design degree.
Bratz is literally a chaotic masterpiece. Jade is my fave Bratz girl and Burdine is an iconic antagonist. Burdine’s first actress later voiced Eda the Owl Lady from The Owl House.❤ The part where you talk about the painting by a guy who gave the model a disease is interesting and want to do further research on art history.
did not expect to cry during a video about bratz, but listening to you talk about your experiences being sexualized as a child hits so close to home. i wasn’t allowed to play with bratz growing up because of the reasons you’re talking about. now at 26 i collect them and monster high and i’m healing my inner child because fuck all that shit
wow I just started watching and you are bringing up VERY important topic, thank you Lisa for your honesty because all of this sexualization of young girls is so disgusting and horrible, the worst part is that almost every girl experiences this
I loved that you also dove into orientalism and showed the real life example while making it absolutely clear just how absolutely disgusting it is! Being in art school myself, these fucking artists were always praised and never questioned, so it's beautiful to see someone calling out their gross behaviour and disturbing art! Hearing your experiences made me so mad and disappointed as I'm definitely familiar with this behaviour as well. I'm so sorry this happened to you and I really appreciate that you're using your platform to educate on the safety that adults should provide! I hope a lot of young girls will see your channel and are made aware of the constant victim blaming and sexualization that is still going on and see that that should never be normal at all!
I was and still am obsessed with Bratz, I had the dolls and some journals. My fav was Yasmin and the Rock Angels album has a special place in my heart. “So good” makes me cry literally everytime I listen to it, it’s so so good!! Thank you for this video, you have no idea how much it means to me. ♥️♥️💕
Girl, I'm just 18 minutes in but this video is already great 💞. I never owned a bratz doll myself 'cause i was more of a nintento ds kid playing too many games. But even as a little girl it was always strange to me how the adults around me hated the bratz dolls. Being a girl and existing was always somehow a problem, additional to that i even dared to be born with brown skin. So yeah I'm pretty happy about your take on this topic💜🔥
Phenomenal analysis on “Bratz”, I grew up with Bratz dolls (dolls I gave away to my Elementary school because they literally had a verily few girly toys), movies and games of all sorts. I’m so glad you brought up the The fact that professional Sleazeballs and sex pest tourists we referred to as “Passport Bros” are modern day colonizers/orientalists, “Bratz” just proves how fashion doll controversies aren’t all valid, emotionally immature adults projecting their insecurities and body image issues onto fudging fashion dolls and girly Contant in general is hilarious and pathetic.
"IS IT HALLOWEEN ALREADY? WHAT ARE YOU WEARING" is a line thats been stuck in my brain forever because i played the bratz games an unhealthy amount as a kid lmaooo turns out they do this when each piece of your outfit isnt all from The Same Line and it took me years to figure that out
This was SUCH an interesting video I loved every bit of it! And as an OG Bratz fan I’m so glad you came out of this as a Bratz Stan hahaha. The comments people made about Bratz was completely based off their looks they never paid enough attention to see the good lessons they taught. Also adding onto the Genie Magic convo, as a Pakistani boy I was super happy seeing these designs in a mainstream doll brand because the dolls incorporated details I’d see in the Bollywood media my family watched. I do love how the designers took south Asian/Middle Eastern culture and mixed it with the sassy Bratz style, I think not specifying the culture left a lot of ambiguity for a variety of consumers to resonate with.
yeah I think they were trying to be more relatable to more people, especially with the owner of the brand being of a Iranian descent, but I also get when people get offended(especially when its immigrants in the west), bc cultural things are sometimes made fun of when ppl participate in them, unless it's being appropriated by someone North American and it becomes "cool". In this case I don't think they were trying to make fun of the cultures they referenced, but you know, it's a bit of a complicated topic for me haha
As a girl in Brazil, I was always told to stop having fun because "men" and "boys" were looking at me. I remember once I offered a male cousin of mine if he wanted a condiment, only to have my father flip out at me and GROUND ME. ('would you like ketchup' sounds a lot like 'would you like a kiss down there' in my language). None of these behaviors were perceived as sexual by my child self, only the adults. I was cat called constantly until I was 17, it stopped as I began to look more mature. I appreciate you, Lisa. Thank you for this.
I never realized how interwoven Bratz media was with itself (like the outfits in the show being based on actual looks from the dolls). I was waiting patiently for you to mention the lip-shaped phone in the items section bc I had that as a kid myself 😭 yeeee I'm so happy I could finish this today I LUV your deep dives and this one was fantastic 💜
I love so many of your videos, especially the deep dives, but this one hits so hard. I grew up on BRATZ and as a (mixed race, South-East) Asian, my representation was always the Jade archetype (which I think has been reproduced by every other teen-focused media after the BRATZ craze) and what you said about your relationship with r*pe culture as a child and the orientalist foundations of people's outrage towards non-White bodies is so ‼️‼️‼️ the fear of simply having a body still lives in me, and it's taken me so many years of adulthood just trying to release it. Absolutely disgusting that it was so normal for the adults in our lives to make us feel that way. Thank you for another slayage 💗
My vacation started yesterday, so I'm free to enjoy this masterpiece! However, I must admit that I know Bratz the least, out of the big three (Barbie, Monster High, Winx Club, Barbie.. actually not three!), so I hope to educate myself on the series. Thank you for working so hard!!
Girly I watched this whole thing from start to finish. As a hardcore bratz fan who loved the show, the games, and the dolls…I can’t explain to you how SEEN I feel with this deep dive. All the little nuanced things (like Jade and Cloe having swapped Rock Angelz outfits) that used to confuse me as a kid…you mentioned. I can’t explain to you how much I feel like this video was made for me 🥺 THANK YOU for putting so much effort and thought behind such a niche little obsession. I loved it so much!!!
I LIVED for Bratz Genie Magic back in the day and the music slapped. But, now looking back it's really culturally insensitive, thanks for teaching me those hats are called ushankas, many years ago I got one in a charuty shop from the USSR which blew my mind (how did it get to some random countryside charity shop in England) To answer your question, I would VERY much like to keep the names of things and the appropriate names in media, it's important to have that correct so that we dont make mistakes again in the future. Because realistically it was genie magic that took me to learning about Indian and Nepalese *fashions*, and luckily I lived in an area with a lot of nepalese people, I had a lot of Nepalese friends (and have visited Nepal since too) so I got to learn about their culture and their fabrics from the people who owned the fabric and clothing shops and were also passionate about it as part of their own culture. Lucky for me, yes, I learnt a lot from the right sources, I even have full traditional outfits from dhaka fabric made custom and khussa shoes (which are from many countries, notably in my area were worn by Pakistani people and Indian people) too; directly from people that taught me about them, or from Nepal after learning about their history and cultural importance. However, for those that dont have that access to learn about how culturally important it is (or isnt) then how do they learn where the line is? Thats why it's so important, if youre profiting off of their culture and fashions, the LEAST they could do is learn about it and use that time to pass that forward
Can we just talk about the acting segments as the characters? Gurl, I LOVE. That's genius and I'm utterly jealous for not thinking of that following right after the loading transitions. Also totally love the attention to detail with the Byron target lol. This video is so fun and interesting to watch. The forever Diamondz Sasha costume was such a vibe. It looked so good on you!
i will nEVER stop shouting that the Bratz Rock Angel soundtrack is TIMELESS. Nobody’s girl??? hello?? truly shaped my tastes, and i am eternally grateful. I am also a Genie Magic stan but I haven’t heard the soundtrack in so long and All together just made me scream the hold it had on me??? I could truly go on about Bratz music my gosh, Let Go was like a coping song for me as a child. I had the Bratz Ice Skating rink and i would just turn it on and let the song play on loop and to this day that is like a go-to song when i’m anxious or need motivation wow
First of all, as someone how grew up with Bratz you did an incredible research. That said, I will give my opinion on several aspects: -When I was a kid, I never got to hear anyone around me say that Bratz looked "inappropriate", so to recently hear people saying their parents wouldn't let them have Bratz for that reason, was something that surprised me a lot. -I don't know at what age I started to like/play with Bratz, but I can assure u that I was very young. And I remember that one of the reasons why I loved Bratz was bc I saw myself in them. I have big lips (which my mom always compared to bratz' lips) and brown skin (same as Sasha and especially Yasmin!). For that same reason, when the bratz live action came out...even though I liked it, I was VERY disappointed that they whitewashed her (Yasmin)😓 -I didnt know burdine was that young! I always though she was in her 50s/60s lol those writers were so nasty.💀 That's all I have to say, and btw THANK YOU for pointing out the orientalism bc when talking about Bratz movies, these topic always gets forgotten🙄😭
its hard to describe the comfort bratz gave to me growing up as a poc kid. thankfully my parents didnt care, and if anything enabled my bratz interest. i also love how bratz is growing up with us these days.
I'd like to add that I love how those adults criticize young girls for wearing "adult" clothing, and then they'll turn around and tell them to stop being so childish and to stop liking childish things- like the whole reason why I started wearing those types of clothes is because I was afraid of being judged for dressing my age. I completely agree that they shouldn't be sexualized, but I think it's important to note that a lot of kids started dressing older because adults will relentlessly bully kids for having interests, especially on the internet. P. S. Also, as an Owl House fan, I can't get over the pink lady's voice-
exactly. The best example of this is adults being pissed about thongs but IN THE SAME BREATH shame people who have "visible panty lines", like which one is it???
one suggestion for later deep dives: i would love a quick introduction to the general gist of the show and the characters. i personally didn't know bratz like that, so a quick overview on who is who would be interesting :) only if you would like to ofc!
Bravo. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😍😍.A complete movie created by Lisa according to Lisa's script with Lisa in all roles and all post production done by Lisa too. I am very impressed ❤❤
My introduction to Bratz started with Bratz live in concert Nevra doll that my aunt got me for my birthday when I was 5 . Best gift ever I was instantly obsessed. It was set with CD that I played on repeat. I adored that doll.
I loved the movie when I was younger I used to watch it once a month for years, it just gave me a cozy feeling for some reason, even though now that I’m older I realize how bad it is. I still love it though, that scene with Yasmin and Jade in the bathroom while out from under was playing was so emotional and relatable and beautifully awkward 💖 like when you see your ex best friend and you both miss eachother but you try to act chill and it’s just sad and weird 😭
In my youth I wasn't allowed to play with Bratz dolls, predominantly because of how "provocative they looked", but I frankly didn't care because I was too busy stripping my barbies and making them scissor. I didn't get into Bratz until probably late high school, which was a perfect time to be exposed. The unintentional self-awareness and overly dramatic voice acting was ICONIC. The Bratz discography is also extremely good, and there are so many phenomenal songs. I remember laughing my ass off when I'd hang out with my friends and I'd just throw one-liners I remembered.
This video was SO GOOD! Bratz was my childhood, you did it so much justice and I'm REALLY glad you didn't skip the social critique. You reminded me that compared to a lot of things I was exposed to at the time Bratz was actually a pretty empowering and positive influence on me at that age. I enjoyed feeling 12 again. Plus you're just really fun to listen to!
my mom never got me bratz just because of the heavy makeup. she didn’t want me to feel like i had to look like that.. she had issues with monster high for how skinny every girl was too lol. i still had easily 60+ monster high dolls. i’m glad she did that tbh. i didn’t really feel interested in makeup or like it was something i needed until i was much older, and i think she helped that. i think there’s a way to criticize the way that more revealing clothing and makeup is peddled to extremely young girls without victim blaming. i remember trying to find swimsuits with my mom as a young girl and not being able to find ones that would cover everything i wanted to be covered. thanks again to my mom for custom ordering my swimsuits so i didn’t feel so uncomfortable. companies and corporations should be held responsible for pushing certain standards on children, not the children themselves.
I also had an issue finding clothes I was comfortable in as a kid for those reasons, but also bratz wearing a mini skirt did not influence me to suddenly dress like I'm 20 either, so people are misdirecting their frustrations
i absolutely understand your struggle with the school uniforms, specifically the skirts!! i went to a private school that required uniforms, so we had only 1 specific skirt we were allowed to wear. but it also only allowed to be 2 inches above the knee at max!. i was 6’ tall in 8th grade. it was 4 inches above my knee almost always, but i would wear black solid leggings underneath, so literally no skin was showing. i had 1 specific teacher who basically made it her mission to make my life miserable- she would constantly send me to the office, or write me up, or tell me my uniform was inappropriate, or call me out for how short my skirt was in class. she made me cry several times bc there was nothing i could do to fix it. i was already awkwardly tall for being in junior high, so the uniform specifications obviously weren’t designed for someone like me. not to mention, shorter girls could get away with rolling their skirts up to be ridiculously short (shorter than allowed) and nobody batted an eye. it was so infuriating because all of the blame was put on me for something entirely out of my control. i couldn’t make myself any shorter 🙄.
I had almost every doll, the car, the limo, the mall, the pool, and I thought they were college kids 😂 Also, they made me love street wear type clothes, I never thought of them as "sputty"
You telling about your Siberian childhood was so cute, I love seeing Slavic women like you (and me hihi), brown hair, brown almond shaped eyes, round cheeks doll face, round nose and mouth and generally small round body's bone structure. Like, not every slavic woman is a blond blue eyes tall aryan white supremacist one with a flamboyant bone structure
this video is gold Lisa, good job, that intro almost made me shed a tear because i had the exact same experience as a child being sexualized for simply existing and my body developing earlier than other girls but as you said I WAS A LITERAL CHILD, it gets me everytime because i haven't met a girl/woman who haven't had a traumatizing experience regarding to simply being a girl/woman... it's sad af
Yess!!! Amazing job as usual im so glad you brought up the racism behind people's outrage, a lot of doll fans tend to always ignore it. You handled everything wonderfully

Glad you addressed orientalism and race and how minors were expected to compensate and victim blaming was so prevelant for young girls
Orientalism? You mean 2:10:57? Discussing genie magic?
@@I_always_have_been_Daniel49havent watched the video yet so this comment made me laugh lmfao
My mom loved the Bratz dolls because of the inclusion and because Sasha was so EXPLICITLY Black. Also, the way that grown adults sexualize little girls is actually insane. I had a hormone disorder
that made me go through puberty very young, and I still have moments of anxiety over how my body/appearance is being perceived
it genuinely alters your peace of mind, bc they were so violating of the childhood innocence with their constant blaming and policing
@@maria-212 so from what i’ve seen yasmin doesn’t actually have an official ethnicity. ur right about her being based off isaac larian’s daughter, but the designer carter bryant described her as hispanic and her original name was going to be “lupe.” to be fair, she could be both, and i guess that explains why she calls her grandma “bubbe” in the movie. my point still stands but that’s my bad for not knowing that
@@maria-212She doesn't even look middle eastern 😅 She's more like a latina.
@@DiamondsRexpensive middle easterns and latinas have very similiar features
If the creators contradict themselves on this ; let's headcanon her as half middle estern, half latina.
the parents who were worried about bratz being 'too sexual' were the same parents who grew up with tv shows that went "ooooooo" everytime 2 kids kissed. get real.
Exactly
which is disgusting btw
EXACTLYYYY
I immediately thought of boy meets world. Like that scene where Topanga (who was like 10 max in the scene) shows off a bathing suit and an “oooo” sound plays. Like wtf that is a child

Bratz captured the chaos of how me and my cousins played dolls/pretend teenagers as kids but it’s even funnier because it’s not even entirely intentional
they really gave a lot of ideas to kids too with their weird ass scenarios ahahah
I've always said the Bratz movies feel like someone just wrote down what their kid was saying while playing with dolls 😂
being sexualized as a child by the people who are supposed to be protecting you is a different type of confusing and hurtful. i was so confused when all the sudden i was getting yelled at for wearing the same clothes i had been wearing for years. it made me hate my body because it was seen as inappropriate just because i had started growing boobs (i was 11).
exactly! it's soooo so confusing and disorienting! all of a sudden ppl make you feel like you're constantly guilty of something when you're just existing
Literally! I remember one time before I started wearing bras (i think I was also around 11 or 10) that I was helping clean out my aunt and uncles storage unit and it was super hot, so I took off the sweater I was wearing over my tank top. I was told to put it back on because I wasn't wearing a bra and I was "showing" stuff.
as a fashion designer i absolutely hate the fashion industry for sexualizing fashion i hate having to go through periods of high anxiety where i can't wear cute clothes because i'm scared of being sexualized and you addressed that perfectly in the beginning, i wasn't expecting to go into this video and get a serious conversation out of it but girls are constantly being sexualized for no fucking reason and bratz are an amazing example of this and they're literally not even real (even plastic gets sexualized when it looks feminine) what a world we live in 🙃
that's the thing... even plastic gets sexualized, it's insane.
same ): i’ve loved fashion my whole life for ME, but i get harassed every time i leave the house. i was stalked for months outside of my college to the point where i don’t even exit the building for more than 30 seconds anymore bc they would come out of the darkness and sneak up on me within the minute i walked outside. i’m scared to even wear skirts anymore in case my uber drivers decide to touch themselves again even tho i’m entirely covered. even after so much of that trauma i was wearing a huge sweatshirt and cargo pants, completely covered up, and i was still harassed and sexualized. i am SO TIRED of having to be in fear of leaving the house in general just because people can’t help but sexualize us. i want to live in a city that only has other pretty girls that love cute clothes so we can all be at peace for once.
@@ellaizcool i completely understand and relate to you, and that last part is such a dream utopia i yearn for everyday :(
Its scary how universal it is for so many women to look back and realise how much sexualisation and cat calling happened aged 9 to 15.
I would legit hide my eyes during those scenes as a kid.
same!!! they always made me super angry, but also it's a big no no in Russia (wasting food, especially in terms of throwing it like that)
As common as it is in teen or preteen media, food fights are VERY rare (I've never witnessed one ever throughout my time in grade school).
Went hungry the rest of the day
You ate with that first section I literally stood up out my chair when you started getting into the race thing because so many people don’t realize that aspect and I’ve always felt that was what was going on
Based on their attacks I thought bratz are gonna be super inappropriate and they were not at all, so it’s definitely race
left no crumbs
I didn't realize parents thought bratz dolls were inappropriate when I was younger that was the only dolls they bought me cause they had my features (almond eyes/pouty lips) its so gross how other adults was sexualizing regular features on these dolls...
as a bratz collector I seriously respect the effort you put into recreating the bratz looks 😂
oh OW as a latina w big lips, almond eyes, and wide hips who hit puberty at 10 your experience as a child hit me sooooo hard i’m like laughing in an effort to dissociate ahaaaaa
excited to listen to the rest of this in my cubicle at my adult job 💅🏼
You hit every nail for me though I’m Black with round eyes but booooy was that triggering🫠
I appreciate an impartial view on Bratz because that was my obsession. I had so many Yasmin dolls because she “looked like me,” but Roxxi and Jade were my favorites.
this research made me wanna get the dolls to collect them ahahaha
@@LisaFevral good luck with that bestie😭collecting Bratz dolls is like going to war💀the scalpers?? Unbelievable

@@oreokitten4629 Same 😂
Thank you for bringing this up because I hate the "forceful" enjoyment of stuff because of how we look rather than relatability, in Winx my fav was Flora and Musa, My fav Disney princess are Rapunzel, Merida, and Mulan in that order. I don't relate to Princess Tiana, my fav from that movie is literally Lottie because was just more relatable to me. Literally in Bratz Jade and Chloe are my fav.Like even in monster high my fav was always Draculaura and Cleo
Cloe's dramatic hair movement feels perfect for her as a drama queen. It works so well with her personality.
Honestly yeah you’re right Ahah even the hair is a drama Queen
Also, the Bratz website was AMAZING!! It had all the characters(Fianna, Nevra, Felicia and so on) with their favorite number, music, favorite color and nickname. Also, all the albums with the name of the songs and much more. So much personality I used to write all of it in my Bratz journal I was obsessed! I remember Yasmin loved Black Eyed Peas so I started to love Black Eyed Peas. My whole childhood and personality was these girls ♥️
omg I love when creators of characters write little fact pages for them, like their fave music, colour, etc hahah
that's why I loved monster high and Bratz so much, they and all these details about their characters on the site and I just loved it ❤

Or when an adult likes a kids show and people say that they're most likely a p*do because they "pretend" to like a kids show
Also I'm transmasc too
it is the worst when it's from your family:(
No offense but sounds like they suck
That traumatic experience and fetishisation of you existing as a poc girl in that family is probably what makes u think you’re a man now
Hearing about the 13 yr old Tahitian "wife" was upsetting, I had to look up what happened to her.
It's also a nice to hear commentary about these childhood IPs from another non-American.
omg I'm so glad that she had a good life and that she could get rid of that creep!
and thank you sm🥰🥰
A Bratz analysis is a real big coincidence ahah I went to a anime/comic con event last weekend, in there I've found a group of 4 gals dressed as Bratz. They looked really cool, i really liked their outfits (especially the shoes), so I asked if i could take a picture and save it as a future outfit/clothing style ref and they were really happy.
I went back to the group of my male friends who i was a the con and they, no joke, said ''Who were they cosplaying, hookers?'', to say i was without words is... i dunno man
holy shite omg... like what is wrong with ppl, I don't get it:(
Hope they’re not your friends anymore. They seem like the type to conflate cosplay with consent.
As someone who never watched the show in English one of the biggest shocks for me was the fact that Burdine has the same va as Bojack Horseman's mom
I was definitely a Bratz girl, I had quite a collection as a kid, my parents never saw why so many other parents made such a fuss over it
thats a green flag that they didn't see anything wrong, bc they're right haha
Standing ovation for this entire comment!!
@@serenitymoon825 ahhh thank you
Did anyone else have the experience where they were told they were too old for Bratz despite being you know… a child? Like I remember being told at 11-12 that I was already too old for the movies and dolls, and then when monster high came out the only way I could get away with watching or knowing stuff was cause I had a younger sister who was the “appropriate” age, like I was still a kid, I was younger than 18? And then flash forward to now where people my age are coming out as monster high/bratz fans I’m like “so I wasn’t too old!? Why was I made to feel bad about it?!”
I had that problem with ALL media targeted at 8-13 year olds. I was shamed for liking any of them the ENTIRE time

Random comment: Your words about being sexualized as a child made me cry.
Burdine’s first actress later voiced Eda the Owl Lady from The Owl House.❤
The part where you talk about the painting by a guy who gave the model a disease is interesting and want to do further research on art history.

wow I just started watching and you are bringing up VERY important topic, thank you Lisa for your honesty because all of this sexualization of young girls is so disgusting and horrible, the worst part is that almost every girl experiences this
I loved that you also dove into orientalism and showed the real life example while making it absolutely clear just how absolutely disgusting it is!

Safiya Nygaard did a video recreating Bratz Dolls and it’s awesome! Some of the outfits are still very cool.

6:33 The impact of dolls on me as a boy was that I wanted to pursue fashion and be creative. Also, it affirms queerness and is a safe space for many.
Oh wow, even being grounded for that?? And yeah, the most disturbing part is how much men were catcalling me as a kid

One thing Bratz got right was the music. The music was always so good. I loved the dramatic animation style. It was so funny and over the top
Thank you sm for watching it😭🥹🥹
You don’t know about LOL dolls? They’re the “new bratz” in my opinion
@@ArianaWoods112 This might be true, I actually don't know them tho
im only 2 minutes in and im already obsessed with the look / effort
Girly I watched this whole thing from start to finish. As a hardcore bratz fan who loved the show, the games, and the dolls…I can’t explain to you how SEEN I feel with this deep dive. All the little nuanced things (like Jade and Cloe having swapped Rock Angelz outfits) that used to confuse me as a kid…you mentioned. I can’t explain to you how much I feel like this video was made for me 🥺 THANK YOU for putting so much effort and thought behind such a niche little obsession. I loved it so much!!!
Omg I’m so glad you liked it🤍🤍
I LIVED for Bratz Genie Magic back in the day and the music slapped. But, now looking back it's really culturally insensitive, thanks for teaching me those hats are called ushankas, many years ago I got one in a charuty shop from the USSR which blew my mind (how did it get to some random countryside charity shop in England)
To answer your question, I would VERY much like to keep the names of things and the appropriate names in media, it's important to have that correct so that we dont make mistakes again in the future.
It looked so good on you!
omg thank you😭😭 I was feeling that outfit sm too ahahaha
i will nEVER stop shouting that the Bratz Rock Angel soundtrack is TIMELESS.
I literally made a playlist out of my faves on TH-cam bc it is INSANELY good
First of all, as someone how grew up with Bratz you did an incredible research. That said, I will give my opinion on several aspects:
-When I was a kid, I never got to hear anyone around me say that Bratz looked "inappropriate", so to recently hear people saying their parents wouldn't let them have Bratz for that reason, was something that surprised me a lot.
For that same reason, when the bratz live action came out...even though I liked it, I was VERY disappointed that they whitewashed her (Yasmin)😓
-I didnt know burdine was that young! I always though she was in her 50s/60s lol those writers were so nasty.💀
That's all I have to say, and btw THANK YOU for pointing out the orientalism bc when talking about Bratz movies, these topic always gets forgotten🙄😭
Almost 3 hours of Bratz content from lisa? Is that a dream?? Titanic is crying rn
its hard to describe the comfort bratz gave to me growing up as a poc kid. thankfully my parents didnt care, and if anything enabled my bratz interest. i also love how bratz is growing up with us these days.
Every time Lisa says ✨iconic✨ is iconic by itself period
2 hours and 40 minutes for Bratz, wowwww I'm gonna order some snacks first ♥
one suggestion for later deep dives: i would love a quick introduction to the general gist of the show and the characters. i personally didn't know bratz like that, so a quick overview on who is who would be interesting :) only if you would like to ofc!
Bravo. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😍😍.A complete movie created by Lisa according to Lisa's script with Lisa in all roles and all post production done by Lisa too. I am very impressed ❤❤

My introduction to Bratz started with Bratz
live in concert Nevra doll that my aunt got me for my birthday when I was 5 . Best gift ever I was instantly obsessed. It was set with CD that I played on repeat. I adored that doll.
that song is so good tbh ahah
I loved the movie when I was younger I used to watch it once a month for years, it just gave me a cozy feeling for some reason, even though now that I’m older I realize how bad it is. I still love it though, that scene with Yasmin and Jade in the bathroom while out from under was playing was so emotional and relatable and beautifully awkward 💖 like when you see your ex best friend and you both miss eachother but you try to act chill and it’s just sad and weird 😭
One thing i always loved about Bratz is how they praised ALL types of beauty, without stereotypical flaws. Hope they return BIG one day!😊
the outfits... like i personally appreciate the sasha look very much
yeah I basically learned everything through making this, and now I'm a big fan ahahah and the Sasha look made feel so cute ehehe
Girl you've helped me with my thesis - so thank you!!
omg you're writing a thesis on bratz??? love that
BoA?? She really did it all I swear. ngl I was never into Bratz as a kid, so this entire video is an education for me ^^;
You are like my inspiration fairy I just adore your aesthetics and ideas on fashion and design ✤

I’ve said so many times that Byron is definitely the true villain of this show 😂 loved your discussion of him
I have a personal vendetta against that man ahaha
In my youth I wasn't allowed to play with Bratz dolls, predominantly because of how "provocative they looked", but I frankly didn't care because I was too busy stripping my barbies and making them scissor.
I didn't get into Bratz until probably late high school, which was a perfect time to be exposed. The unintentional self-awareness and overly dramatic voice acting was ICONIC. The Bratz discography is also extremely good, and there are so many phenomenal songs. I remember laughing my ass off when I'd hang out with my friends and I'd just throw one-liners I remembered.
Can't even begin to explain how excellent this video is, and I haven't even finished it
same listening to the design part rn

This video was SO GOOD! Bratz was my childhood, you did it so much justice and I'm REALLY glad you didn't skip the social critique. You reminded me that compared to a lot of things I was exposed to at the time Bratz was actually a pretty empowering and positive influence on me at that age. I enjoyed feeling 12 again. Plus you're just really fun to listen to!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video!! And thank you🤍🤍
my mom never got me bratz just because of the heavy makeup. she didn’t want me to feel like i had to look like that.. she had issues with monster high for how skinny every girl was too lol. i still had easily 60+ monster high dolls.
i’m glad she did that tbh. i didn’t really feel interested in makeup or like it was something i needed until i was much older, and i think she helped that.
i think there’s a way to criticize the way that more revealing clothing and makeup is peddled to extremely young girls without victim blaming. i remember trying to find swimsuits with my mom as a young girl and not being able to find ones that would cover everything i wanted to be covered. thanks again to my mom for custom ordering my swimsuits so i didn’t feel so uncomfortable.
companies and corporations should be held responsible for pushing certain standards on children, not the children themselves.
I also had an issue finding clothes I was comfortable in as a kid for those reasons, but also bratz wearing a mini skirt did not influence me to suddenly dress like I'm 20 either, so people are misdirecting their frustrations
I won a copy of Bratz Rock Angelz in a contest as a kid and, ngl, that's the moment when I peaked. I love that CD so much ❤❤
i absolutely understand your struggle with the school uniforms, specifically the skirts!!
i went to a private school that required uniforms, so we had only 1 specific skirt we were allowed to wear. but it also only allowed to be 2 inches above the knee at max!.
i was 6’ tall in 8th grade. it was 4 inches above my knee almost always, but i would wear black solid leggings underneath, so literally no skin was showing.
i had 1 specific teacher who basically made it her mission to make my life miserable- she would constantly send me to the office, or write me up, or tell me my uniform was inappropriate, or call me out for how short my skirt was in class.
she made me cry several times bc there was nothing i could do to fix it. i was already awkwardly tall for being in junior high, so the uniform specifications obviously weren’t designed for someone like me.
not to mention, shorter girls could get away with rolling their skirts up to be ridiculously short (shorter than allowed) and nobody batted an eye.
it was so infuriating because all of the blame was put on me for something entirely out of my control. i couldn’t make myself any shorter 🙄.
the way u edit the bratz clips is SO funny we stan a queen of comedy
also the first look ATE
29:22 the fact they made Tweevils collectors edition dolls not so long after this 💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻
I had almost every doll, the car, the limo, the mall, the pool, and I thought they were college kids 😂
Also, they made me love street wear type clothes, I never thought of them as "sputty"
yeah I really don't think there was anything wrong with their outfits
omg it's here !!! a full length movie too so excited 🤍
3 hour long video about BRATZ from lisa? thank god, im in heaven!
by the way.. all the production, THE OUTFITS, everything in this video - so so so good
Omg thank you🥹🥹
And now the Tweevils are finally gonna have a release as a 2-pack! Hopefully this means they'll also release a Burdine doll at some point too
You telling about your Siberian childhood was so cute, I love seeing Slavic women like you (and me hihi), brown hair, brown almond shaped eyes, round cheeks doll face, round nose and mouth and generally small round body's bone structure. Like, not every slavic woman is a blond blue eyes tall aryan white supremacist one with a flamboyant bone structure
From her appearance I thought she’s one of the native Siberian groups like a Yakut. But I could be wrong
this video is gold Lisa, good job, that intro almost made me shed a tear because i had the exact same experience as a child being sexualized for simply existing and my body developing earlier than other girls but as you said I WAS A LITERAL CHILD, it gets me everytime because i haven't met a girl/woman who haven't had a traumatizing experience regarding to simply being a girl/woman... it's sad af
it's so crazy that we were told that we got catcalled and harassed bc of what we looked like, when in reality we literally looked like kids
Yess!!! Amazing job as usual im so glad you brought up the racism behind people's outrage, a lot of doll fans tend to always ignore it. You handled everything wonderfully
