I agree with you when you raised the possibility of happyface not wanting dreamcatcher to end up in the final line up for mixnine, and thats because... the whole thing was so so odd. Mera said it was a mixed bag of feelings but it actually wasnt. All of us hated mixnine and wanted the girls out of there as soon as possible and thats because they had little to no screentime in the show as it went on. I think (and this is a wild guess) their leave was already agreed on by happyface and yg before the show started and therefore there was no reason yg should "waste" screentime" with a group that was not going to stick to the end anyways. Also mixnine flopped hard. There was another survival reality show going on at the same time (The Unit) and it was doing numbers, while mixnine became a commercial failure. Anygays, thankfully everything turned out well at the end.
Talking about updates, what happened next is actually quite simple: Handong left the group to join a survival reality in China, there was a lot o mixed feelings about it in the fandom (some of us were scared she would leave the group for good given the history of other idols that joined survival reality shows). And in the middle of that Covid happened so everything turned into a mess. Dreamcatcher promoted as 6 for their 1st full album (The Tree of Language) with the title track Scream and this comeback was another peak of their popularity. The fandom grew so much but unfortunatelly they faced big groups for the win (Izone) and couldnt get won. Dreamcatcher released another japanese single "Endless Night" and it's one of their most hard hitting song to date. They also had their first online concert "Dystopia" that year (since world tours were not possible at that time because of covid) and released another game collab song called Rose Blue (not promoted). Later in 2020 they had another comeback with Lose Myself (Boca Mini album), Handong was already done with the survival show but korea was not accepting passports issued by wuhan's province and Handong was born there and she couldnt come back, she was literally stuck in china for months. The comeback was great, a lot of the members shone on the spotlight (Gahyeon with the pink hair), but covid was making everything harder, lots of music shows were cancelled and we lost the window for our best shot at a music win. Some months later they released a couple of japanese songs, one of them being "Eclipse" that became the opening track for an anime based on the King's Raid game (Dejavu game) also called King's Raid. Fortunatelly korean ban on chinese passports was lifted a month later and Handong rejoined our girls at the end of 2020, right in time for their second online concert "7 Spirits" (this time as OT7).
In 2021, they finally had their 1st OT7 comeback after one long year, with Odd Eye (Road to Utopia Mini album). Like the other times, we got so so close to get the win, but we were facing really strong groups and it wasnt possible. But with that, they wrapped up the Dystopia Trilogy. Dreamcatcher held their 3rd online concert, Crossroads, this time it was a 2-night concert with 2 different concept and it was (in my opinion) their best online concert so far. Later that year they released Because as a special summer comeback. Because had a thriller summer concept that stood out from the traditional summer songs at the time, they didnt promoted it much and we didnt get a chance on music shows because a lot of them were cancelled due to the Olympics. They held another online concert after that "Midnight Circus" and released a bunch of merch. After almost 8 months they released their 2nd full lenght album (as OT7 this time) called Apocalypse: Save Us (title track: Maison) that finally FINALLY gave them their first and second wins. As you know, they finally were able to go on tour, occasionally doing online concerts here and there (they did one for their comeback promotions of the album and their concert in LA was broadcasted online too). They were the first kpop group to ever attend Primavera, a spanish music festival (it was great) and they also attended kpop flex in Germany this year.
Now Dreamcatcher is probably gearing up for another comeback (they have been saying its close and that the new song is very good). They also have the HDA ceremony coming up, HDA is a new year-end award show and it's the first time ever Dreamcatcher has been invited to be part of the line up of an award show, so we are all very excited for that.
    And thats it!

So to answer some of your questions: Gahyeon and Handong trained for 6 months before debuting. Gahyeon went to FNC dance academy before becoming an official trainee. She also passed her auditions for SM and YG (as well as HF) but decided to go with HF to debut faster. Handong didn't have any "experience" in the idol/trainee world like the others. She came to Korea to study. She then auditioned and passed.
Now regarding the "stolen win" situation, to this day nothing has been confirmed. However there were some speculations of DC being blacklisted by YG because of the whole "lawsuit" situation but then again, nothing has been confirmed nor denied. There was also a rumor about Everglow's company buying them the first win. Tbh it's not that shocking. Many companies do that. I know we begged HF to buy the win because it was getting ridiculous on how close we would get everytime and still not get the results we wanted. Of course now, we got them not one but TWO wins (and many more in the future). But it still doesn't sit well with me the amount of time it took for us to get them the damn win...
Also... Dreamcatcher is a 3rd gen group. People mistake them for a 4th gen because they became more popular around that time.
Also, Mera made another video about DC like a day or two ago BUT you're gonna have to watch all their MV's (incl. the Japanese ones) to watch it.

Mix 9 was extremely dangerous to the group and when it looked like Jiu and Yoohyeon were going to be in the final nine I think they pulled them out to avoid that. If that group had won against the 9 member boy group (they didn't), then Dreamcatcher would have been destroyed because two of their best members would have been locked into a 3 year contract with YG.

    • @moongirl8807
      @moongirl8807 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Yeah plus at that point they already faced the issues of YG being a b*tch like not paying them. So it wasn't attractive at all to keep them in there and let them debut in a different group. Sometimes I have this thought that they actually win and get to be in this temporary group like IZ*ONE or Kep1er which is just surreal. But I don't actually know what was the plan, the winning group would've had promotions right? But for how long, 3 years seems a little long. But maybe that just shows how insane YG is.

I found out that the winning group (THE9) disbanded in December 2021, so that means Handong instead of having a 7 month like she did (March to October 2020), she would have been on hiatus for 21 months instead, which is insane honestly.

There’s been a meme in the fandom since 2019 where we all hate The Sh*w and, although we still don’t completely like them, that is what they got their second win on this year. Show Champion, however, (that the girls got their first win on) the entire fandom absolutely loves. Their producer and staff are like family to Dreamcatcher, most of them said they cried with the members, and they even gave them a full extended encore stage (which they never do with other groups) instead of cutting them off mid song. They always treat them so well. But yeah, just thought I’d let you guys know the inside joke with that.

Awesome to see you react to this, it really is a great video to understand a lot of what Dreamcatcher has been through!
As far as I am aware the only thing that got "confirmed" by fans after the fact about the whole stolen first win is that fans made some incorrect assumptions which lead to them claiming they should have had a higher score from youtube videos, when in fact the number that The Show had was correct. The part about expert opinions remains unclear to this day, but I am glad that they (and we) were finally able to put that behind us this year.
If you want to get an even better understanding of how much the first win meant to them I encourage you to check out videos of the show where it happened, but make sure to keep some tissues around :D

I feel like up to deja vu, they've had decent success. And then scream dropped and alot more people began to notice them. I think the time between the releases of scream and boca was a time where they gained alot more fans. Because when boca came out, they were able to double their album sales, going from a group who sold around 50,000 to a group who sold around 100,000 albums. That's growth right there. And they're continuing to grow too! I think their latest release sold around 140,000 albums. They are now on the list of kpop girl groups who have surpassed 100,000 album sales at least 4 times, with other girl groups like twice, blackpink, girls generation, red velvet, itzy, izone, and (g) idle. And they did that all before getting their first and second win. They are definitely more popular now, and I can't wait to see what else destiny has for them

Unfortunately Mera didn't make any updated version of this fun informative video. And many many things happened after Deja Vu and many details are missing to those who watch this. The most important of them all being the release of Scream. This song created a new trend for the group, that ultimately led to the Dystopia Trilogy era. The time Dreamcatcher were propelled to stardom, to more fame, a wider international and domestic fandom, and actual commercial success.
The funny thing is that Odd Eye, one of their biggest commercial successes had the same treatment as Deja Vu did. The first Dreamcatcher victory was stolen again from them on M Countdown. That show shut down international voting on the voting weekend, only to re-enable it on Monday... K-Pop can really be shady... And rich creepy old men with a love for young girls and big time grudges are the absolutely worst... The two DeuKae wins in April 2022 was actual justice, not only an overdue event. The girls being so emotional was partly because of this.
Also, the lockdowns led to Dreamcatcher creating a lot of fun behind the scenes content, that contributed greately to their later success. Special clips like Break The Wall and Sahara, Dreamcatcher Mind (which kept people sane) and Insomnicsy starting making all those fun videos. Unfortunately, it also ruined their career in the Japanese market, right when they got their first #1 on the Oricon Chart. At the same time it led them making the legendary two-day Crossroads Utopia and Dystopia online concert. Right after that, they singed with Sony Music for a global distribution account and were booked for Primavera Sound 2022 a whole year before.
A few more fun points: Happyface used to belong to a parent company, which was obviously responsible for the 2018 album release delays. I bet their survival depended on so many things at the time. However, that company was acquired by another, then Happyface became (at least on paper) an independent company, called Dreamcatcher Company. (Happyface actually became a subsidiary to Dreamcatcher Company.)
Love Shake was not an original song. It was a cover. Happyface used to have a "supergroup", a 2nd Gen quite famous girl group called Dal Shabet, which went ok. This group was active when Minx debuted and remained active for some time. Love Shake was actually written for them, not Minx. The "outdated feeling" you mention is because of this fact. Minx were marketed as "the little sisters of Dal Shabet" at the time and even did a Christmas song together.

Also, I have to say watching this video now I feel much less apprehensive about it compared to when I first watched it in 2020 because, this year, DC has finally started to solidify themselves in the kpop industry. The reaction to their first win was so massive, so many fandoms were helping, and so many people were really congratulatory towards them when it finally happened. I think we all kind of took a big breath after that moment because we knew how much a win meant to not only the members but also to their success and survival in the industry. Although, I do think they’ve proven that music show wins are not the only thing needed to keep a group afloat, even if it will help a lot now. These last 2 years have been a rollercoaster but this year in particular has been Dreamcatcher’s shining moment. Dropping their first OT7 full album, releasing solos, getting their first and second wins, being invited to music festivals, going on an American tour (that will hopefully actually become a world tour in the coming months), and getting invited to an award show for the first time ever. This is looking like we’re leading into Dreamcatcher world domination. No but seriously, they deserve it so much and I hope (but also know) that they are enjoying the success and recognition they’ve been receiving. They are some of the hardest working and most genuine idols in the industry and it makes me happy to see it all come to fruition.

I have to give props to Dreamcatcher Company and the CEO for supporting the girls throughout Minx and even now in Dreamcatcher. Last Comment of the Day lol! Lovelyz and AOA sadly aren't around anymore as of 2022, since both groups disbanded in 2021 and 2020 respectively. However, AOA dominated the charts from 2014-2017 (member Seolhyun was even named one of the Faces of Korea, rivaling Tzuyu of TWICE), and Lovelyz saw big success from their debut in 2014-2016 gaining a large fan following. These two groups were big names towards the end of 2nd Gen and the beginning to mid point of 3rd Gen, so having Dreamcatcher be just below them, who themselves debuted mid 3rd Gen to late 3rd Gen, is a big accomplishment! I highly encourage you both to check out some tracks from them!

A summary of what's happened since then. SCREAM was announced just a few days after this video was posted, and there have been 4 other comebacks each almost doubling the amount of sales and breasking the records of the previous one. While nothing has been proven or disproven, The Show has made it a point to change the voting rules on every comeback, even cancelling shows on the week DC could win so I have little doubt there was some intentional skewing going on during Deja Vu. Anyway I always thought that DC would win when they became big enough that they could win other music shows instead (which have different criteria) and their 1st win was indeed on Show Champion. Although they did get their 2nd Win on The Show.
My personal theory is that Happyface pulled DC from MixNine because they panicked about YG getting Jiu signed to a 3 year contract since he had basically put her on the debut group from Ep1. They were right on that one but I think that suing YG was one of the reasons certain parts of the industry were against them, like that was a bold but stupid move tbh and I also think that's why they eventually put DC under Dreamcatcher Company instead of HFE to sort of distance the group from that mess.

After this there was still a chance get that win, so we managed to win prevotes i.e. DC was #1 position in terms of votes but SbS nominated the group which was #2 ,#3, and other, DC wasnt even nominated which is sus. To get nominated for the win artists/group needs to be atleast top 3 or if the group is 1 then they're guarenteed to get nomination. Also this was recent (2022) DC performed at kpop flex along with other group and SbS on their twitter released a full hd pics for other group but no DC , but when we keep texting or tweeting or replying them they finally released a photo and that too where you cant even see faces of some of the members where other group had perfect pic, and SBS also released pic for all the group that performed on kpop flex(2022) but they never released DC till to this day. I think something this documentary really shows is how closely tied to the hip Dreamcatcher and Happyface are. Unsurprisingly, Dreamcatcher has relied on Happyface to provide them the creative direction and industry connections/resources as well as to direct the girls' talents (which Happyface has done a really good job of, I might add). However, Happyface also seems to be very reliant on Dreamcatcher as its income generator and to keep itself afloat. You can see it in their decision-making; such as where they had to leave the Mix Nine reality show (which in hindsight, turned out to have been a stroke of luck) in order to go on a concert tour (i.e. swapping longer-term industry connection opportunities for immediate/shorter-term financial needs) or their signing the group onto brand deals (e.g. the Microsoft block chain brand ambassador deal, the video game brand deal) seemingly as a means to fund an MV (and presumably other expenses/overheads).

HF or DCC is small but it does depend on how you draw the bell curve to determine the mean/avg. My guess was that once YG wanted to change the contracts, DC pulled out. You & I did do better but DC got their pus from the international fandom; similar to PIXY right now. None of my Korean friends knew DC and even today if you are not a Idol group listener you wouldn't know who DC is. as someone who lived through the "SHIT SHOW", ppl used the wrong period to obtain the scores (if i remember correctly by a day?!), however, even when you used the correct dates (i did back then), the expert score was more around 350 while the others got 1500. the problem i had back then was after the incident, the SHIT SHOW tweets were awful towards DC, blatantly mocking DC and insomnias. i would've been happy if they just published the scores as the other shows did but they never did. Yes , they are the first to mix rock and metal sounds in their songs. They created this new genre of their own. And after that many new groups and artists have followed their path and made songs that has rock sounds in it. The artists you mentioned all admires Dreamcatcher and looks up to them. Rock is currently becoming famous in Korea and i would say that's mainly because of Dreamcatcher. as for the update since the deja vu era, it's handong joining youth with you (and getting stuck there because of covid), the start of dystopia trilogy (scream) and followed by the japanese comeback mentioned in the video (Endless Night). i can't say that it's uneventful, but there's definitely not much about them having as much trouble as their initial struggles. their career and achievements just kept raking up until their first win (finally) and second win in maison's promotion.

I have to applaud Happyface/Dreamcatcher Co. too for allowing the group to be themselves even within the confines of the demands of a Kpop group. While their title tracks have a consistent rock/EDM sound now, Happyface allows them the chance to flex their own styles and passions on their Special Clips and other TH-cam and social media content. I feel like that kind of creative freedom just makes them better as a whole, like they don't feel burnt out or waiting to end their contracts and move on. 6:35 No, as she said, WDYCTMH was just a single; Love Shake, the comeback, was the mini-album.
8:45 Two months after the _announcement,_ but the work had been going on for a while before that. Dongie and Gahyeon trained for about six months before debuting.
9:55 I love how Siyeon's description of Dreamcatcher is _better_ than Happyface's... 😂
10:20 Creative, but very risky, since rock is _not_ a genre that traditionally went down well in Korea. This is why for the longest time, they did so much better internationally than domestically. I'm led to understand that Siyeon, at least, may have had some influence in the new direction.
11:50 Thing is, Happyface knew that MinX's lack of traction was a failure of the _marketing,_ not of the girls. For Lee Juwon (their CEO), the girls' talent and dedication was never in question, and he "joked" that if Dreamcatcher didn't take off either, he'd start a cucumber business for them, so at least they'd be taken care of... 🤣
12:50 That's why the mini-album was called Prequel, yes. 😉
26:50 Now we know. Happyface did _indeed_ rebrand as Dreamcatcher Company, with D1CE Company (handling boy group D1CE) and HF Music Company (handling vocal group Classmate, soloist Lee Sieun, and any other acts and trainees for the time being) as subsidiaries.
27:25 This was Melbourne, and apparently the theatre wasn't quite "burned down", as Mera says, but certainly gutted enough that they couldn't perform. They did, however, have an impromptu fanmeet at a local area where they'd heard about some Dreamcatcher graffiti...
29:00 They gave JiU a big fucking sword. What's to understand..? 😜Also, your faces! 🤣
36:00 It hasn't. As far as I'm aware, what Mera has here is the latest we have on the issue; no official announcement was ever made.
27:30 Well, Lovelyz have disbanded, and AOA _effectively_ have. I wouldn't be surprised if Deukae were finally edging out over (G)I-DLE too now, to be honest, but I'm not too au fait with the numbers.
39:25 They _absolutely_ have. As Alina says, many of the groups who've headed in that direction have outright _said_ they love Dreamcatcher...
At some point, you'll also want to discover Rolling Quartz, an _actual_ all-female Korean rock band, who are _also_ Deukae fans (their drummer very vocally so; both she and their vocalist have Dreamcatcher covers on their individual TH-cam channels). And there's an official cover of Deukae's song Good Night on their mini-album, Fighting (with an MV)... but I'll start you off with their official debut single, Blaze... th-cam.com/video/Pg51wRHMRek/w-d-xo.html

that's the reason why, Handong, only got a few lines on their past albums before, because, she's literally don't know how to speak or understand Korean well. and only Handong and Gahyeon are the only female trainees left, at that time. so their company decided to includes the 2 of them, when DREAMCATCHER have to re-debut. it's some kind of a risk, and gamble when HAPPY FACE Ent., decided to do that.

Another comment! Both Han Dong and Gahyeon trained for 6 months respectively. They auditioned and passed within I think a week of each other. Initially the two were said to have been training to debut in a Chinese Korean girl group, with hopes of debuting in both Korea and China respectively. Initially though these two were apart of a larger pool of trainees that could've been put into Dreamcatcher, the other trainees that could've been Dreamcatcher all participated on the first season of Produce 101 representing HappyFace. The most notable is a woman named Hwang Soo-yeon who is now a choreographer and dancer who has worked with SM and MNH (home to Chungha and BVNDIT).

I never knew i'd get emotional over any artist being successful at all. But i cried like crazy when i saw their First win and them almost breaking down of happiness.
Never knew i'd be getting this attached to These girls Back when i got into them. But by now it feels like your child or best friend finally making it. This Feeling of being proud for what they have achieved after everything they've been through after all this time too😭
I'm glad they put out so much content for the fans. And also very glad that the company treats them right in a world of a Business that Sometimes doesn't give a fuck. God bless these girls as Well as everyone working hard to make Dreamcatcher Happen and the Fans that Made them this successful (and that do a great Job of helping new people to get into them instead of being toxic idiots to scare away new people. Many bad experiences with other groups lmao)👏🏼

Now, I'm not one to make a habit of praising companies, and HappyFace has made its share of dumbass decisions, but where HappyFace(now Dreamcatcher Company) has exceled above pretty much all other companies is that they actual trust their artists. They trust them to be great performers, they trust them to perfect their art, they let the members be their authentic selves, and they always seem to encourage side projects. They also form great, long-lasting relationships with those outside of the company that they work with like dancers, hair and make-up artists, stylists, and video production companies which seems to have created a pretty positive work environment. All these things matter when trying to make it in such a competitive market. If group morale is high, you can weather any storm and so does Dreamcatcher steadily rise from the depths of obscurity to critical acclaim.
What Mera didn't quite touch on was how emotionally fragile the MINX members were towards the end. Siyeon once said that she got to a point where she couldn't bare to watch other sing and perform because she believed she lost her chance at her dream. Gahyeon and Handong only had 6 months to catch up to the other members all while they were about to debut with the least popular genre in Korea, rock. It must have taken everything they had. That's why one of the DC moments recently that touched my heart was after they had finally won their first win. In one of their behind the scenes videos, just days after their first win, they were all in the dressing room getting ready to film a performance video and you could tell they were still beaming with pride. Then, they actually started playing Minx songs and were dancing to them. Up to this point, they never really wanted to talk about Minx and would kind of shut down if it was brought up in an interview. But, it was as if they could finally take this trophy back in time and show their former selves that they didn't give up and that this Minx era doesn't have to be a dark history anymore, just the beginning of a long and hard journey that would end up bringing so much joy and success. I may have cried...>.>

Don't worry about being emotional. Music is a form of art and art is SUPPOSED to make people feel things.
When DC had their first win, I didn't know it, I can't watch those shows. I saw the thumbnail of one person's YT video the next day and went, 'Nah. No way they won NOW.' I thought somebody was a trolling clown.
But then I saw other thumbnails by other channels with the same news. Once I figured out that it was REAL, they REALLY won, I cried before I ever watched that video. I was SO HAPPY for them (obviously still am), it was like a giant weight had been removed.
Not even ashamed of crying over it because DC really DESERVED to win LONG before Maison dropped! And then, what an awesome song to win with! Tackling yet another global problem, breaching the subject, starting a serious conversation has been on-brand for DC ever since Scream. Can't help but love these awesome ladies. I was already SO PROUD of them before Maison dropped, and now I have even more reason to be proud of them!

Three more little tidbits of information! The 1st talks about the members involvement in their concept change, and the 2nd goes into rumor territory about some sneaky things YG did on MixNine. The 3rd is more info on MINX's comeback, and their initial possible disbandment
1st. Dream Catcher had appeared on a variety show where the MC had asked them about their first debut. The members quickly all said that they were kind of against the concept and song choice, but that was the style at the time and their company was following the trend. SuA and Siyeon said that the members had talked to their company and said that they felt they had a lot more to show then what was currently being shown with their current concept. So, the company listened the girls which started the re-debut process/project.
    2. There was a rumor going around during the airing of MixNine that suggested that YG himself was actually trying to buy out trainees from their contracts with their current companies, and was excluding said companies from a lot dealings done between the trainees and the show. It is rumored that YG tried to buy/bribe JiU, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, and Dami from HappyFace Ent. and, this is what prompted them being removed from the show. Other trainees rumored to have been targeted for YG's buying out plan include: Yu Jin-kyung (Brave Entertainment rumored to have left entertainment industry in 2019), Jang Hyo-gyeong (Star Empire Entertainment and current ARIAZ member), Lee Su-jin (Fave Entertainment/PlayM and current member of Weeekly), Woo Jin-young (HappyFace Entertainment and current member of D1CE), Jeon Hee-jin and Kim Hyun-jin (both signed to BBC and members of LOONA), Lee Jae-jun (formerly of BananaCulture, former C-Clown member, former Trei member, and currently signed to MLD and promoting in the project group TAN), and of course Shin Ryu-jin (signed to JYP and member of ITZY). Again, this is a rumor, but a lot of people seem to believe it is true.
    3. MINX's comeback "Love Shake," was actually written and produced for their then sister group DalShabet (also stylized Dal☆Shabet). Many fans of both groups said the song was TOO reminiscent of something DalShabet would've done back in 2011-2012, and many boycotted the song. The members of MINX (JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, and Dami) all said that after the failure of this song their company was planning to disband them and brought it up multiple times to the girls. Luckily, the company chose to re-brand with the help and push of the members.

Also react to Dreamcatcher Mind. It's a reality tv show with 10 short episodes. Each episodes is unique and shows the girls' personality and closeness. They very much help getting to know the girls better.

So the The Show controversy was never really resolved but it's okay because Dreamcatcher's 2nd win happened on The Show and everyone was yelling about vengeance, it was so funny. Dreamcatcher have now achieved a lot more fame after this video because the Dystopia Trilogy (Scream, Boca, and Odd Eye) really put them on the map.
Mera (the creator) has said that they don't want to make a part 2 of this as it's pretty depressing to keep investigating the industry and how messed up it is, which is fair, but they have made a video analysing the cinematography of all their music videos and I highly recommend it.
I'm loving your reactions to Dreamcatcher, can't wait for more!!!

The issue with SBS and The Show was never corrected. It was dishonest and they got away with it. Dreamcatcher’s battle for success became personal for all of us. The positive was that InSomnia’s support and dedication for these Ladies only got so much stronger. They became the face of the underdog in the industry and that helped them.
