Diving with Blue Whales | Sri Lanka

  • Broadcast: 10 April 2011 on Sunday Night, Seven Network, Australia.
    They are the largest animals our planet has ever known, their tongues alone weigh more than an elephant, their hearts are the size of a car. Despite all that, we really know very little about the magnificent blue whales. Man has almost hunted them to extinction, but ironically it was Sri Lanka's bitter civil war that gave them sanctuary. Only now that the war is over is the world seeing one of the greatest blue whale colonies ever discovered. Tim was right there alongside these giants.

    A noble deed to study the whales! It's too bad there isn't a less invasive way to observe them than taking such a huge boat, or if it can be done much more effectively through the use of drones. It would be interesting to know what her study is, although locating and identifying specific whales in my amateur view is crucial... but from an aerial view you'd think it would be much more effective to locate and study them. Drones could approach even closer. Also size... weren't some of the dinosaurs larger, like maybe the brontosaurus, or that similar fossil found I think it was in Patagonia? Just my amateur view.

    • @dudeman3793

      Nice try but the blue whale is the largest animal to EVER exist, like, EVER. ALL of them. Including dinosaurs. An ancient Ichthyosaur may have been close but as of now the blue whale is still the biggest.
      certain long neck dinosaurs (can’t remember the names atm) could longer than the blue whale, like 120-180 feet long, vs 100-110, but the Blue Whale was still MUCH heavier/more massive. A land animal could NEVER exceed the weight of a blue whale. It’s literally impossible. It’s still impressive they estimate some of them may have gotten fairly close at 100 tons, but blue whales weigh up to 175 tons.
      Anything bigger has to come from the Ocean, and there has been nothing that the human race knows of that was ever bigger, through the entire fossil record.

  • @OneLastHitB4IGo
    @OneLastHitB4IGo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @0:40 There were dinosaurs that were bigger. Patogotitan mayorum was 122 ft long (37 meters) and 20 ft high(6 meters) at the shoulders. The 2nd largest was Argentinosaurus huinculensis coming in at 115 ft (35 meters) long and 24 ft (7.3 meters) tall. Both were found in the Patagonia region of Argentina & Chile ( see: Our Planet/largest dinosaurs ever found)

    • @michealtaylor7745
      @michealtaylor7745 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Kris De Roo What of the Triassic Icthiosaur that was as large or larger & heavier than a blue whale? Fossil bones from 230 mya discovered, show it wasn't even full grown. 99.9% of all species are now extinct, so all are wrong to say blue whales the 'largest animal, even before that Icthiosaur was found. One says the 'largest animal we know of so far.

    Yet another film supposedly about 'diving with blue whales' when no such activity was shown. The sheer idiocy of trying to make a film about whales when 99% of the footage is taken from ABOVE THE WATER! It's almost like human arrogance, to presume to portray anything about whales but without inhabiting their realm - the water. Imagine if whales were to do documentaries about humans from their point of view - underwater - wherein humans would be these wave-distorted figures above the water. How much could that reveal about humans? Then the marine biologist goes on about how little we understand about these creatures. It's little wonder! Make some effort to commune with the whales - in the water.
