    Network security engineers tend to deeply understand what they are installing and configuring right down to the packet level. This is usually born from an extensive background in networking. Typically they will have many years of experience (17 in my case!) They work with a very broad range of equipment, they are also a dying breed as it is not as 'sexy' nowadays, however the rarity of talent is driving contract rates up.
    A cyber security engineer tends to be someone who has come across from some other career or from being an it generalist and works with siem or privilege access management. They spend time looking at alerts generated from the equipment the network security people have configured and generally work from (or help create) playbooks. Network security qualifications tend to be pragmatic and technical whereas cyber security qualifications tend to be fluffy, out of date buzzword laden qualifications such as CEH and cissp. Rather perversely these are valued more than the actual technical qualifications.
    The way I see things going in the short to medium term is automation driving out the cyber security engineer. This is already evident in the newer generations of software on some of the forward thinking vendors platforms (fortinet with their security fabric for example) we can already trigger an automatic response for certain types of event - manual intervention will be required for some time however!

    You can "learn Python" enough to write a port scanner in a few hours, and by that time you can convince yourself and your interviewer you can "read" Python, which is about all you're gonna be asked to do. If you can learn to read Python, you can read C+ and HTML to find port calls from malicious API's and you're a working analyst! Oh, and by the way, that's like doing math on paper, when you have a calculator or even a computer in front of you; they make software to "pentest" the malware they sent you in an email, Sherlock! You plug the gadget into the bug and record the results. "That's worth six figures? I can train a monkey to do that!"-HR The crux of the matter!

    What is the future of Firewall Engineer..
    I am expert in firewall only..

    However there is limit of salary in firewall
    Is this good time to change technology?

    • @dccybersec
      @dccybersec  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tough question man, as there's no real shortage of firewall migrations or engineers required to do that job, but rather that role itself has been incorporated into jobs like, network security engineer or even just sysadmin/ network engineer roles. Perhaps now is a good time to focus on something similar to firewall engineering (like splunk), get skilled up in that area and use your vast experience to push ahead and stay ahead of the curve

    i went from helpdesk to jr soc analyst to sr. analyst and now i have an opportunity to move to netsec engineer...it sounds like a great chance to get solid base and anchor for the future, since i skipped sysadmin/network roles, but i have thoughts if it makes more sense to try progress in different soc... the market kinda sucks atm though, at least in my geo.

      Edward Snowden had a military background any may have gotten training while in the Military. He was a Systems Administrator for the NSA. Generally you start off at Help Desk as (Level 1) to Desktop Support Technician (Level 2) before becoming a Systems Administrator (Level 3). Sys Admin is a stepping stone into the role of a Security Systems Administrator.

    Any tips for moving from level 2 Help Desk to Network Engineer, after getting CCNA and Security+?
    Most Network Engineer jobs are asking for 5+ years xp. Do I need to get experience in a Network Admin role first? Can I start CCNP now or wait to get some experience in networking first?

      @@dccybersec Do you think the same is true in the US? I have 2 years of expereience and its a mix of cloud admin and network engineering at lower levels; working on my ccna, should have it by end of next year.
      Do you think going for a cybersec eng, vs netsec eng would be more of an overlap between these spaces (cloudsec and netsec), or a possible recommendation of career path? Specifically I've worked with AZ and o365, and my other job was programming ubiquiti switches setting up vlans and all that. (yeah i know, why ccna for ubiquiti switches, but i already started so might as well just get it)
      I've come to really enjoy both kinds of working environments.

    Network security engineers definitely do not do anything on servers. We do not "test" system vulnerabilities. We dont touch or do anything that has the word "server" in it ever.

    • @dccybersec
      @dccybersec  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless it’s about linking ldap or some other form of sso or certificate from a server to a firewall, or setting up the nic security of a virtual host (and the servers that sit under it), or….
      The list goes on. Maybe you don’t do it in your role, but many people HAVE while working as network security engineers.
