Just had a delivery at the door my wife just suprised me by getting me this hadn't even mentioned or thought about it now im super excited to build it looks a ton of fun 😀
I've had this for a few weeks and I have to say this chassis is not without issues. First of all, strength. If you put in a fast motor, things will start breaking, fast. Great ready to get metal CVDs, metal diffs and metal steering unit. If using stock motor, you need the metal universal joint or else the joint will keep popping out. The second is going in a straight line. This thing has serious bump steer. If running on a rough surface, it can suddenly turn left or right 90 degrees causing rollovers. After spending more on the upgrades than the rig itself, putting in a fast motor and dialing all the adjustments, I'm happy with it. I love the tight steering radius and it's so much fun to drive, esp in small spaces. BTW, I got the Mud Mad.
Just put mine together and having the same issues - have the four wheel steering upgrade bars - but it keeps popping universal joints and flipping over! Would you mind recommending with CVDs you installed? (There’s a Tamiya Hop-Up kit which has brass cross joint - did this fix the issue?). I’m using a 7.2v Li-Ion battery - not sure if this is making it worse re tipping over - or whether I need to play with toe settings... Many thanks!
@@spencergold1279 Save your money and go for the Yeah Racing CVDs. They are well worth it. The metal hop ups do stop the uni joints from popping out but once you start crashing, the wheels will come off evertually. The original CVD design is much too weak. Toe in the front and rear as much as you can and switch to tires with less grip, like some worn out touring tires. Understeering is this rig's friend. It's either that or tipping over. Also tighten the screw all the way down that's in the middle above the rear arms so the rig doesn't sway so much when turning. Hope that helps. Have a look at my videos to see how my rig runs.
Diamondbac - thanks so much for this - much appreciated. I’d seen the Yeah Racing CVDs (the only ones which came up from a Google search as it happens....) and they seem to be on “back order” (can’t get them???) - but I’m finding I’m almost spending more time putting the standard shafts back together than running the model! Tweaked the toe settings a bit last night and it’s much more stable - there’s a huge amount of play in the hubs/drive shafts which affects toe - so I think more solid/Yeah Racing type CVDs would solve that. Great little fun indoor toy - and has definitely given me the bug to get all the kits I pined for as a kid. I’ve got the four wheel steer hop-up bars attached (the instructions set the rig up for very aggressive toe out!) - and the instructions say to slacken off to zero the two grub screws I think you’re referring to (which I think effectively act on an anti roll bar) to assist with tight cornering. I think the Tamiya desired set-up is for very aggressive and tight four wheel steer with rear toe in and front toe out - plus a lot of body roll - but they don’t factor in the amateur user when it comes to the skill level required not to tip the thing over every time you use it! Thanks again for the response. Very helpful!
Just a quick update - couldn’t get the Yeah Racing CVDs anywhere, so opted for the hop-up cross joint parts. Chalk and cheese in terms of the play and fit - and has so far solved the issue. Tamiya should have included these, or better fitting parts from the start... I’d have paid a bit more for the overall kit. I see the possible concern you raise re wheels coming off though, as I can see how the plastic drive shafts will lose their thread for the screws holding the wheels on.... but now when I bump the thing into a chair leg it doesn’t fall apart - so for now at least, I’m happy!
@@spencergold1279 Glad things have worked out for you. Have you glued the metal part of the cvd with the plastic part? The grub screw that holds them together is not strong enough. I think in the hop up metal cross joint instructions, Tamiya recommends doing this but fails to mention it in the kit instruction manual. It makes a world of difference because it eliminates dead spins, where the motor spins but the wheels do not or lag.
Love mine with the steering option since I got it last christmas, haven't had problems yet and I'm slowly considdering to go for ball bearings since I like it so much and drive it regularly.
Dr_Dingleberry_Brown Thanks so much! I started in just a big parking lot but didn’t feel viewers would get a good feel for how it runs. So I drove all over and then remembered a local park had some neat spots and cool textures.
I have a dilemma and hoping to get helpful tips...bought and been playing for about both the Mud Mad and the mini Lunch box. Lunch box was doing wheelie before but lately, it hasn't. Switched out the wheels/tires with the Mud Mad thinking tires are not gripping, but issue remains. Played around with different throttles and no change. Any ideas? Should I take it apart and re-build, maybe something loose?
Nice Video. Always good to see the Hop-Ups being tested. I Would have liked to see the difference in speed & run time: with bearings & sport tuned motor vs bushings & standard motor. Cheers
I wonder if it's possible to space the wheels out? Does it have hex nuts that can be changed and enough extra thread on the axle bolts to gain a few mm?
Hello! Great review! I am assembling mine at having a problem finding a pinion gear for the 370 sport tuned motor. I have tried a Robinson Racing 16T and 18T and both seem slightly too long. When I tighten the motor carrier into the gear box the gears will not move. It looks like the end of the pinion is hitting the back plate that has the Tamiya logo on it. Any advice? Which pinion are you using with your sport tuned engine?
Wow it turn pretty sharply, I thought. Maybe for a crawl but the pinion needs to lose teeth or a high turn 380 motor.. I saw a review of the Dynahead 6x6 with the optional rear 4ws and it was way too much. Interesting though
92mm wheelbase ? That is like mini-z monster size heh, it's a 105mm wheelbase on it. Also speaking of which, feel free too try the mini-z monster ex with ball bearings mounted in & the x-speed motor.
There’s this one that is together but you need to install your own electronics. Tamiya Lunch Box Mini Gold Edition th-cam.com/video/A8v-Kytj6ag/w-d-xo.html
